Downtown Silver Spring is amazing and has been my home for over a decade. So much transit options that will get even better with Purple Line. Good affordable parking access through the County if one drives as well. So many great businesses especially restaurants from cuisines all over the world with Ethiopian as most dominant. Probably the best coffee selection in the region as well. Two movie theatres (Regal and AFI) as well as Ellsworth and Black Box as well as Dave and Busters for entertainment. Home to some of the best beer selection around at Fenwick (retail) and Quarry House Tavern. Originally home to Denizens and Astro Lab and now Third Hill and Silver Branch. Four groceries stores as well make it far from a food desert. Multiple healthcare providers as well especially in Montgomery building. Pride, Jazz, and global festivals as well as a weekly farmers market on Saturday are nice as well. Housing options that have continued to expand tend to be more affordable than DC, Arlington, Tysons, Bethesda, and Rockville. read more

DTSS will always have a special place in my heart through thick and thin this will always deep down be my place and really a key place that has been the host of so many of my life memories from childhood to adulthood. I remember when Veteran's Plaza had the artifical grass back in the day. I have seen businesses like Pier 1 and different restaurants and shops come and go, but I have still found myself coming down here. One thing I have always loved about DTSS is the ethnic/cultural/national diversity in the area. I have observed different African, Asian, Latin, even Pacific Islander people down here. It's not just a White and Black town by any stretch of the imagination and is one of the most diverse places in all America! Now the parking garages might not be the best convenience wise, but at least they do not cost that much money on weekdays and are actually free on weekends. The events are what shape DTSS. I have been to place such as Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, Bourbon Street in New Orleans Louisiana, Greektown in Detroit, Michigan, and E and 4th Street in Cleveland, but home is always where the heart is. Ellsworth Place always will be a street that is iconic in its own right and a gem in the DMV region. The best time to visit although crowded but for good reason is when free festivals especially music festivals such as the Annual Blues festival and the Annual Jazz festival are in town in DTSS. These are fun, free, and great for singles, families, couples, you name it! Sure, the crime has increased and there has been negative press and attention around that, but the place is still cool just to get out, people watch, maybe hit a restaurant like Copper Canyon and even go to the newer arcade/bar/restaurant the Eleanor that is cool encompassing miniature bowling (duck pin), basketball hoops, pinball machines, among other arcade games. It is just the simple things in life sitting outside on a nice spring, fall, or even summer evening/night and getting some fresh air and relaxing is key. The Veterans plaza portion further down Ellsworth place during the winter time has the popular ice skating rink. The fall time will showcase the legendary and free, yes I said free, annual Silver Spring Jazz festival that attracts thousands of people. The Ellsworth place is set up like a plaza, and an outdoor elevator and stairs can take people upstairs for more restaurants including a Japanese grill, although they have lost their spark and flame in recent years, if you get what I mean. Family lunch, dinner, singles, dates, couples, you name it there are restaurants and things to do here. Shopping is nice along the strip. DSW was outside next to the Wayne garage for centuries but has moved onto one of the upper levels of Ellsworth Place mall (at the intersection of Fenton Street and Ellsworth Place) and has been replaced by a Nike factory store outlet. Not too far from Ellworth place has the legendary AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center for classic movies with popcorn, beverages even beer, and of course the Fillmore music concert for awesome live music, among small business/boutiques scattered around the area. read more

I prefer Uptown Gold Spring, but this place will do. Let's be honest here, the food around here can be great and there's plenty of money and lots of people, but I don't love Silver Spring or it's traffic. Still, I don't hate it and there's a lot of good ethnic food (especially Max's for Shawarma and Falafel, and Sardi's of course), and even some Bubble Tea in this very Mall at DTSS, which is a Kung Fu tea with nice service and decor which is absolutely gorgeous. I just wish that parking was better and policing was less militant and stuff was less expensive. Overall I can only give the mall a 3 despite and having a Kung Fu Tea because it is so expensive and because parking and traffic are so bad. read more

Silver Spring, you've come a long way Baby! I love DTSS! As a Silver Spring resident for the past 17 years, there was a time when I headed west (Bethesda) for dining and nightlife. Now I am a true devotee to all that Silver Spring has to offer. Shopping (Ann Taylor Loft), Dining (Pacci's), Happy Hour (Jackie's) and movies (Majestic 20 and AFI) are all in one place! Not to mention a new place to satisfy my sweet tooth in a fat-free way, FroZenYo! DTSS is so easy to get to and there is plenty of parking that is so much cheaper than Bethesda and DC. (Street parking if FREE after six pm on the weekdays, and always free on the weekends!) read more

This is a small hub where you can find Asian, pub, coffee, Spanish, and many more restaurants, as well as a few shopping outlets such as New York & Co. and H&M one street over. People don't usually hang out here until later in the evenings, but it's a nice open area to explore around when bored. I really don't understand all the sky-high ratings...this place is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Sure, there are free festivals and it is very metro accessible, but DTSS is one of those places that is great for the first three times you go and then it easily becomes old. When this place first "premiered", I was about 16-17ish and I just LOVED going here with my friends, walking up and down the strip, thinking I was cute. The Majestic was THE theater to go to, there were restaurants galore, and everything was so brand-new and shiny you just kind of forgot how bad city place mall sucked. Fast forward about five years later and DTSS is nothing more than a overcrowded metro stop chock-full of hoodlum teenagers, children running wild, and cheesy couples. The area is well kept, but the stores and restaurants are nothing out of the ordinary you couldn't find anywhere else in the DC area. The movie theater is huge, yes, but it's also packed to the brim with obnoxious teenagers who have a hard time using manners. Meh, if you're a tourist, I guess I would recommend DTSS as a place to grab a bite to eat in an aesthetically pleasing neighborhood--but don't go comparing this area to the Grove in LA or SoBE in Miami, because it isn't meant to measure up in that way. Because to be honest, downtown silver spring is nothing but a glammed-up strip mall that just happens to be in the right zip code. read more

A very happening place with a wildly diverse crowd, young, old, all shapes and sizes and colors! I find the area to be fun and very energetic, with outdoor music concerts, movies, fairs, festivals, and farmers' markets in a convenient, very walkable space with a Regal movie theater, an AFI Silver theater, a concert venue, bars, fast casual, and sit-down restaurants, a smoothie place, and even a play area for kids. Red Line Metro, as well as many buses, connects you to and from this nice area of Silver Spring. One down side is homeless people are waiting outside the garage on Ellsworth, and it's awkward when they open the door to the parking garage for you and expect a tip. read more

Ulta, DSW, H&M, CAVA, Color Me Mine, Fuddruckers, Smoothie King, Sushi Jin, Not your Average Joe's, Forever 21, Ross, Marshalls... just a few of the many shops and restaurants you'll find in this busy corridor. In the winter, there is ice skating in Veteran's Plaza. In the spring, summer and fall, there are all sorts of concerts, festivals, and events for the whole family. There's a farmer's market on Saturdays, and on weekends they close the street off the plaza is covered with vendors selling all sorts of foods and wares. There are multiple parking garages nearby as well as the Silver Spring Metro Station (red line) which is about a half mile away. read more

I recommend to avoid parking in the Whole Foods lot or if you do decide to park, make sure you park facing out. It's always busy and never a dull moment. You'll see worthy street talent, singers, dancers, poetic geniuses and promo people giving out free samples. Free parking after 6pm if you use Wayne Street Garage. Favorites in random order: Not your Average Joes Urban Butcher Sweetgreen Cava All Set Chik fil A Kaldis Bump n Grind Copper Canyon Noodles and co Kung fu Tea Potbellys Gustos. Society Shops:: Ulta HM TJ Maxx Whole Foods Why 3 stars because is no type of enforcement of the street bums. That loiter mostly in front of Chikfila or along the lines corridor of Ellsworth Ave. Majority are drunkards and say inappropriate things when you don't give them change. They block doorways or be so drunk that they'll be passed out on the ground and you have to walk around. Avoid the movie theater. It's worse there. Teens always feel the need to be seen or heard. Pedestrians feel that they are entitled to takeover the streets and cross whenever. So pay attention. However, over looking the bums, DTSS is HH central! There's tons of great spots, my favorite is Urban Butcher. read more

I enjoy this area. Within just a few blocks you have AFI, The Magestic 20, shopping and lots of restaurants. On weekends you may find a food market or a band playing. During the winter months you can ice skate at the rink across from the movie theater. Where else can you hear music, find Jesus, shoes on sale, smell vendor chess nuts and get Ben & Jerry's? I'm a DC native and was around before Downtown Silver Spring was ever a thing. It used to just be City Place Mall (which died and was revived some years ago, thanks to the success of Downtown Silver Spring). City Place Mall was an absolute ghost town before the development of Downtown Silver Spring. There's a plethora of apparel stores and restaurants of different cuisines. About every week, there's a free show or event you can catch outside either across the street from the movie theater or right in front of Ulta. It's a good place to take a friend who isn't familiar with the area. Some fun activities you can do besides eat and shop are going to Dave & Busters, the movie theater, catch a show at The Fillmore, weekly Zumba classes, or paint some pottery at Color Me Mine. read more

But at the end of the day, you will notice that there are not a whole lot of shops here and most people come here for the abundance of restaurants. Although the city plaza is small and have like 10 stores open, I like to stop by Marshall and Nine West Outlet store there. Now the ice rank is open too. I totally Loooove downtown silver spring. It has everything from shopping, to picking up items at the grocery store. Inside you have different shops and a few salons I mean EVERYTHING OKAAAAAY. I love coming definitely during all seasons the events they have are so awesome, From Wine Wednesdays to live bands playing some nights. The lighting at night is absolutely fantastic I've had several date nights here and walking around with your significant other on a nice cool breeze and everything is lit up and people are everywhere it's a calm and mellow spot. The restaurants are decent although overtime I'm seeing them change the quality is perfect no matter where you go they have Greaaaaat Happy Hours especially at the Pub the onion rings are huge and sooo flavorful. Summers tho I love they have a lot of events especially for children the Cars cartoon event they hosted on a Hot as hell day the line wrapped around where the Not your average Joe's restaurant was but it was Great. Great restaurants and shopping. There's a Chipotle, Noodles & Co, Red Lobster, Chick Fil A, Austin Grille, Nandos, and a couple other popular restaurants. Pretty good shopping around, too. I frequent the area to visit the H&M, DSW, Ulta, and the movie theater, and each shop has a great selection. Definitely a good spot for an evening out and the people watching is top-notch. Friday and Saturday nights can become a bit rowdy as local teens frequent the area to hang out, but other than that, it's a really cool area. During the summer, they have local bands playing near the fountain and usually a large crowd of people stand around to watch and dance. One thing that I don't like are the super aggressive street solicitors. I'm all for charity and women's rights, but sometimes, i'd like to just go from one destination to the other without someone asking me if I'd like to sign up to donate $1 a day. There are seriously 10+ of them on the strip at any given time and you can't take more than 5 steps before they approach you, attempt to strike up a conversation, and start walking with you. There's no avoiding it. I've tried everything -earphones, looking in the other direction, walking with a stern face - it won't work! Oh, and parking. Good luck. There are garages, but who wants to pay for a garage when you're just trying to run into Chipotle, get your burrito bowl, and leave?? I'm not too fond of paying for parking when I'm gone for no longer than 7 minutes, sometimes 8. Other than those things, great area! read more

This shopping area continues to be a disappointment lacking any charm or style. There are several fast food chains, a movie theatre typical of the suburbs, and some chain stores like Ulta Cosmetics, H & M, and DSW shoes. I have been occasionally pleasantly surprised by merchandise at DSW and City Sports, but otherwise this area lacks interesting stores to browse. I would love to see Silver Spring become more quaint by adding nicer quality stores instead of chains. The area needs a nice florist, nicer boutiques, maybe a small toy and game store, and possibly a kitchen store like Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma. The area needs an upgrade. read more

Kids love the fountain in the summer, and there is usually something going on year round. A bit mall-ish but the locals are great, very diverse and interesting folks. Farmers market on Saturdays is great, and plenty of places to grab a bite. Great quality free musical events. Step away from the developed downtown area, though, and you get local flavor among the non-chain, independent restaurants, bars, coffee shops, including Ethiopian restaurants with coffee ceremonies and live music performers. Parking is always easy in Silver Spring! There are several Montgomery County garages that are quite cheap ($1/hour, I believe) and make the downtown a desirable meeting place. There is ice skating in the winter, which is always nice. It's a very walkable area, with a good variety of stores and restaurants. It's also usually crowded, so I've never felt unsafe. read more
