Went here for afternoon espresso, which was very good. Lots of indoor seating at tables, but not much ambiance. Lovely outdoor patio.

A great magazine/newspaper and a big cup-o-latte makes a good saturday morning. Just a quick 10 minute walk through the gallery district (Canyon street) and up a block leads you to this busy cafe. Walking in you see local artwork in the walls, tons of local folk ( artsy, middle aged, coffeehouse dwellers ) and an occasional tourist. The magazine and newspaper collections are great, but they didn't have any to take to your table without purchase. Funny, as I think they're aiming to be 'green', as many restaurants and cafes are in the area (and as the large "WASTE" sign above the counter reads), wouldn't it help reduce waste if one could share a magazine or paper in house? What made this place good were the lattes and pastry. Triple latte was smooth, hot, frothy and had a richness to the coffee only a good Barista brings out. I swear I could taste a good crema... and the croissant! The croissant was crispy on outside and soft inside. Lets hope this is how it always is.... if so, this place deserves a few more trips from me. read more

Downtown Subscription is a great place to spend time. For the most part, California has shied away from bookstore/coffee shop combos. One here in Napa flopped, surprisingly. The bookstore remained;the coffee shop went belly-up because it was competing with Whole Foods, Peet's and a Target with a Starbucks. Downtown Subscription has an incredible array of magazines. It's a perfect place to relax. The coffee is alright... this is the Southwest, not the Pacific Northwest where coffee is a necessity. It's a great place to relax after exploring the art district of Canyon Road! read more

Wash your hands please. I was so grossed out today when the girl at the register went from handling someone's cash to dishing out my pie without washing her hands or putting on gloves. Nasty. I got a cappuccino that was really good. Well done on the drink but my blueberry pie was meh. Chewy crust. Syrupy tasteless filling. And no a la mode option?! WTH? It seems like their magazine variety has gone down since I came a few years ago. They used to have such a great selection. Also, nothing against them, but everyone there was a single senior citizen. I guess it's just their hang out spot. They all were parked at the best tables for a long time with laptops, newspapers and whatnot. It was pretty quiet aside from some self-mumbling emitting from the window seats. Kinda weird vibe. Santa Fe has so many great cafés to choose from so I probably won't go back. read more

This was a great little coffee shop with some yummy desserts. Their main theme is magazines and other printed material that you can subscribe to or simply buy off the rack. They had some cool hobbyist magazines, some great art review magazines, some international things and of course the basics. They also had this cool cat like creature that excretes the most expensive coffee beans made from cups. They were trying to show just how many paper cups an average coffee drinker consumes in a year. It's near the ceiling on a ledge and about 5 feet long. Kinda cool. The bathrooms could be a little cleaner. Pee on the seat without covers is yucky. And co-ed is just gross. read more

The setting for this Canyon Road district coffer shop is nice enough - with both ample indoor seating and lovely outdoor garden tables. The coffee drinks are tasty - especially their mochas and lattes - although more expensive than most comparable coffee shops. Sadly, the service here is indifferent and rather than trying to identify your order by name, they simply call out the coffee type and you are on your own to get your coffee, snacks and tableware on your own. This place could be so much more with a little bit of effort! read more

Downtown Subscription is a nice place with a good magazine rack. Some of the girls behind the counter are a bit surly, but other than that i have no complaints. There's a beautiful outdoor garden with chairs and umbrellas that you can hang out in for as long as you like. read more

This place came as a pleasant surprise after reading some of the not so good reviews. Not the first time I've been misled by Yelp reviews! Been coming here daily for about five months since moving from California and I couldn't be more pleased. Haven't had any of the surliness from the staff that some have mentioned here, but I also don't expect them to make my day nor be my best friend. I just find them very professional and friendly. The espresso, by my standard, is excellent and the baristas have considerable skill. I usually get a beautiful design on top of my cappucino.What more could a reasonable person want? Prices are reasonable especially compared to LA. Even the pastry items are great. I did get a dry muffin once and they replaced it no questions asked after I commented on it. I found the doughnuts to be a bit pricey. I was told they come from a gourmet supplier and are organic, etc. I enjoy the sizable newsstand as well. Particularly the foreign home design mags. The crowd here does seem much more local than other places I've tried in town. It's a very interesting and very social mix. And there is the occasional celebrity who wanders in. I see Sam Sheppard fairly regularly and they guy who played the mad scientist from Back to the Future. I usually sit inside, but there is also a very nice gargen patio out back and a front patio as well. Lots of seating for a coffee shop. I highly recommend this place for anyone who loves coffee and the culture of coffee houses. I really look forward to my stop here every morning. Anyway I just felt I needed to counter some of the negetive flack this great little place seems to have gotten. I've found quite a few reviews for other establlishments on Yelp that just don't seem accuracte either. To a large degree I feel like Yelp has become an catharsis for chronic complainers who just can't or don't want to be pleased. read more

This is a great little coffee shop in a great location, but with a bad parking problem. Not a problem for me cause I can walk it. I don't drink coffee, but they have Odwalla O.J and that I do drink. The magazine selection is okay, though nothing like the Border's at Sambusco or even the Albertson's at DeVargas. You are getting a first hand review because I am here right now with my laptop...OOOPS! You know how you know I'm lying? Because they don't have wifi. Be nice if they did though, cause I stay a couple months out of the year a stones throw from this place and could pull off their network. Get some freakin Internet already. Downtown Subscription is one of those staples that's always going to be around Santa Fe. Since being in the neighborhood more often lately I've frequented a lot more than the previous 20 years I've been in Santa Fe. They could really use a revamp on their cashier process. Old people not knowing what they want...pointing at every single pastry in the display, meanwhile, 10 other equally geriatric locals are lining up, single file, trying to order. It's become quite the hotspot for locals getting together and chatting up about their yoga workouts and pissing on about their relationships. It's good coffee. It's decently priced, just avoid the hours that most people need that coffee fix. Legal parking sucks but there is ample illegal spots. read more

I love the back patio with umbrellas, a water feature and flowers so much that I can almost overlook the spacey, glassy eyed gazes from the bored baristas. Enjoy an "iced americano" or as I like to call it "Iced coffee" and scrawl something offensive on the blackboard for fun in the bathroom. Where else will you find magazines (aka relics of the past) to look at while tourists and older folks wheeze and waddle in front of you in line. Burritos from Tesuque Market and Whoo's Doughnuts served here. (What, what.) While you listen to hip music played at a reasonable volume, enjoyed getting eyeballed by the people sitting down already, and try to overhear the plentiful conversations about the film industry that occur here. I love this place first and foremost because I can walk here! That said, the coffee is strong, the staff is good and the seating is plentiful, brightly lit and gets good sun (outside of course). The thing stopping me is that they don't offer wifi; neither paid or for free, which in this day and age is just odd. How sad. This place is notorious for attitude. Granted, a couple of folks who work here at least have a neutral demeanor, but most of the current crew is negative. It's like a real drag on the universe to even be around them. I look at the clientele and they seem to all have positive energy and enjoying life in Santa Fe. I asked some of them and it seems this was evident even 20 years ago at this coffee shop. The word is, back then, they had a real negative attitude. Now, it's negative energy and attitude. When I instructed the barista (can I call her that?) how much vanilla to put in my drink, she replied, "This isn't even your drink; I don't even know what you ordered!" What? Who cares? Find out which drink it is and listen to the client. So, for 20 years, no motivation, no sense of urgency or time, no emotion except negativity, no personality and yes, the attitude is still here folks. At least they are consistent at something. Santa Fe is a special place. There are too many coffee houses in Santa Fe than to have to even expose yourself to this negative space. I want to forewarn folks, so they don't have to experience this. I would recommend you go somewhere else for your cup of Joe. I will do the same. read more

Great meeting place ... very popular with people renting places in the neighborhood & locals ... great garden area ... coffees good , barista's nice ... but the food ... rolls , breads & quiche ... are really bad !! I cant believe all you haters! This place is the bomb diggity. None of the other coffee shops in town have anything on this joint. Best seating. Best espresso. Best Patio (hands down). Best magazine selection. The art...hit or miss. Gluten free stuff would be nice. They finally jumped on the WI-FI bandwagon so all you computer jockeys should be happy. So the staff isn't blowing sunshine up your butt, you wouldn't be all bubbles either if you had to deal with yuppy east side rich folk who throw a fit if their cappuccino doesn't have a flower design on top. There is no better place in Santa Fe for a relaxing outdoor coffee in Spring, Summer, and Fall. It is cozy inside for winter too. The espresso drinks are up to Italian standards. read more

Ok, have you ever gone to visit Grandma at the nursing home and decided to go down to the cafeteria for a little snack and some coffee? wide selection of treats? good coffee? was it fun , was the staff helpful and friendly? If your answer is no, and you'd still go back a second time, this is your new coffee hangout! The regular coffee sits around way too long and has a nasty, burnt taste. I'm a big fan of this place. Excellent coffee, extensive magazine selection, both domestic and foreign, one of my favourite croissants (it's a big thing first thing in the morning!) and a nice garden for the summer months. My only complaint and this can be a big one is that service can swing from the average to the downright sullen. Its not uncommon to have somebody take your order who will barely meet your eye, seems pissed off with the world and altogether miserable. If the owner could take a dispassionate view on their staff customer service skills and make changes (I have heard others complain about this too), this would be a total gem. read more

So shocked to see that DTS has some haters... I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am a complete brat about my lattes, and DTS serves it just the way I like it every time - translate: everyday. (btw, i think its really funny that those folks from LA weren't impressed - i love LA second only to Santa Fe, but coffee in LA is a nightmare). The PATIO here is gorgeous: bring a book or socialize. The DRINKS are SO consistent... I can only speak for the espresso and the occasional iced tea. BUT lattes there are so damn good I quit putting sugar in them. The SERVICE is GREAT! Everyone's always friendly to me and I don't know what's with those couple other reviewers that don't see things my way. The parking lot isn't great, but it's a parking lot... lots of places in santa fe don't have one... park on the street if it's full. walk five-hundred feet. it's good for you. the interior is nice and simple - clean and light - no ristras hang here, and the atmosphere is what you make it... say hi to all the regulars (there are MANY) or enjoy your privacy publicly. I noticed there are some negative comments about the people behind the counter; please know they all refer to quite awhile ago when there was a very unhappy person working at Downtown. I am here visiting a friend , I am from New York City. My friend has an emotional support dog and she was treated horrifically by a barista, to the point where we left our food at the bar and left . The man was extremely rude , even after her showing her emotional support dog ID verification. Honestly, I live in NYC and I've seen homeless people at Starbucks be treated kinder than the way my friend was treated today. read more

I had a really amazing cafe breve here, made perfectly and snappily. They have a huge variety of magazines and literary and art publications, some really cool reading material for sale, and a nice open room with plenty of seating and free wifi. It's also right beside a bookstore so you can wander over with your coffee. Snack and pastry offerings were a little paltry, so if you want a meal you're better off with a cafe, but they had a few croissants and a good selection of teas. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop in Santa Fe. The drinks are consistently good - they have one of those lever espresso machines - in my opinion, the best way to pull good shots. There's a great magazine collection, by far the largest selection in town. I didn't have anything else but the atmosphere is lovely. Everyone is in a happy chatty mood this early Tuesday morning. Nice shop. Great location, lots of magazines to buy. Ordered iced soy latte, it's hard to find decent soy here in NM, everyone uses silk. Watched Batista make my drink, as she dosed my shot the grinder never was turned on which tells me they don't grind to order, big boooo. I've been coming to this place for last 10 years regularly since it's my local coffee shop and it is next to a good, small bookstore with excellent book selection, so I was shocked and appealed by what happened this morning. I came with my friend from NYC wanting to proudly share my little hangout and I was accompanied my emotional support dog. We were informed that dogs can not come in so I showed emotional support animal photo ID and we purchased breakfast and coffee. When we were sitting at the table I was addressed again by another employee from behind the counter loudly telling me that the dogs were not allowed. I got up from the table and showed again the dog's ID, but it wasn't enough. The employee was very rude and made me wrong for being there. Eventually we felt so bad the we had to stop our breakfast and leave. Nobody apologized or tried to stop us from leaving. I was very embarrassed and upset. My friend from NY said that he didn't see anything like that ever! read more

Fantastically antisocial hangout. Baristas with attitude. Customers hogging tables and bringing in their own food. The coffee is excellent, but parking is so difficult that you can't plan on a quick stop. This used to be a Santa Fe institution (at Water and Galisteo), but now it's more of a place to see and be seen as superior. read more

Overall, I like Downtown Subscription more than any other coffee house in Santa Fe. The coffee isn't fabulous but the option to sip your brew outside (weather permitting) and read a magazine while waiting in line is a plus. read more
