Was in need of an eye exam and found Dr. Chinn's on Yelp. Gave them a call and scheduled an appointment within the same week. Parking can be tough in North Park, but thankfully Dr. Chinn's office has designated parking in the back so it wasn't an issue! The office itself is super clean and has a very welcoming environment. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly by Emily and Mo who were the sweetest girls! Emily did the initial testing prior to the actual exam, and she was super gentle as she walked me through everything. With the eye exam, Dr. Jenn provided me some of the best care I've ever received. She was incredibly patient and answered all of my many questions, making sure I felt heard and reassured throughout my appointment. Closing out, Mo helped me out with picking my frames and ordering my contacts. She was so personable and truly felt like a friend helping me pick out something to wear! I only waited 12 days for new prescription glasses. I got a text notifying me that my glasses are ready to be picked up. Lucky for me, they allow me to come the same day to pick it up. I was seen right away. I tried them on and loved how well they fit. I was told to contact them if I had any issues or concerns about my glasses. I sign only one piece of paper. I got a free glasses case and 2 microfiber cloth to wipe my glasses. Fun fact an artist specially made the design for cloth. I'll update later the design. To start, my past visits to this ophthalmology office have been pleasant and smooth. This review is about my most recent experience. I went in to pick up new reading glasses after waiting three weeks and was eager to start using them, as I struggle with significant double vision. However, shortly after trying them on at home, I realized they weren't helping. I called the office and was grateful they were able to schedule a follow-up appointment quickly. I met with the team associate who had helped fit my frames and, I suspect, finalized my prescription order before it was sent out. During this visit, I learned that the prism strength--an important part of my prescription--had been left out entirely from the order. I was surprised and very frustrated by this oversight. I sincerely hope the corrected order is expedited, and that extra care is taken in the future when handling prescriptions for clients. read more

Communication about appointment was okay but the lady with the long nails and curly hair had a lot of attitude with me and I caught the looks she was giving her coworker when Dr Chinn was being friendly. How rude. She then tried her hardest to sell me glasses via photos from her computer. Ruined the experience. Woke up sick with Covid and contacted doctors office advising that I had an appointment at 3pm but I am sick. I had appointment for me and my kids. Was put on hold and told that they would waive a portion of the same day cancellation fee but not the entire amount because they could have taken other patients.. Basically, if I don't go in (sick and infectious) I would get charged. I advised them I would look for another optometrist. Which is unfortunate because the doctor is actually very nice, but the staff must have changed over the past year because they are very cold and uninviting. If you schedule an appointment with this office just make sure you don't get sick because you will be told to still come in regardless if you don't want to get charged. I am sure they will respond to this review. So let me be direct, I understand there is a same day cancellation fee, but when someone is clearly sounding sick over the phone with their children and you can't have compassion, then that's not somewhere I want to do business. The receptionist was more focused on the cancellation fee than rescheduling me or even being kind and asking if I was ok. Funny, I probably would have paid the fee had the service been nicer. Just a heads up, there are plenty other places to choose from. Look at the other low reviews, this place does only seem to be about money. :/ read more

My search for the best optometrist in San Diego has officially ended. I am so glad to have found Dr.Chinn. I am highly myopic and wears RGP contacts. I also have severe dry eye problems. Dr.Chinn (both dad and daughter) treated me with such compassion and care and spent so much time with me getting the right prescription and fit. I hate going to optometrists because of how bad my eyes are but Dr.Chinn listen to my concerns and I always leave the office feeling relieved. Dr.Chinn also did dry eye consultation with me and I believe they are the only optometry office that I have been to that actually scans your dry eye as part of the routine eye exam. I wish my previous optometrists have done dry eye evaluations then I would have known about my dry eyes issues way earlier. All the front desk staff are friendly and super helpful as well. Do not get glasses from here!!! My dad has had problems with his glasses and they keep telling him to wait longer and see if they get better instead of offering for him to come innne check them. I wanted to buy him another pair to compare and called them to get his PD and they refused to give it to me. My dad is elderly and can't pay for another expensive pair and needs to get them online but can't do it by himself (he is computer illiterate) and I am not in the same city as him to help him measure with the online tools available. I visited Dr Chinn's office to have my boyfriend get his eyes examined and decided to schedule an appointment for myself cause I've never done it before. The office was very clean, and the staff was friendly. Many options of frames to choose from although it did take awhile for our glasses to arrive, I think that's normal? Idk honestly. I'm always looking for the local Mom and Pop shops, especially in my neighborhood. Dr. Chinn's was right down the street, and opened late enough for me to go after work. I was very happy with my service. The ladies in the front and who do exams are all super nice and welcoming, and Dr. Stephen Chinn was great during my appointment. My glasses even came back in a week, which supposedly is super fast. (I'm not sure if this is true since I'm getting old and this is my first pair of glasses in my life. lol) However, I am not happy with the billing situation. Instead of billing my insurance, I was billed using a Savings Pass. Why? I'm not sure. While leaving the office, I thought... "Man, that's expensive." But after discussing with my coworkers, they suggested I should check my itemized account because it was waaaaay too much out of pocket. Here we are now in almost the middle of May. My appointment was in the middle of March, and I'm still going back and forth with the office and my insurance to get my full refund. If the review was only for service and friendliness? 5 Stars. But since there wasn't a clear distinction or even a notion to ask... "Is this going to be billed on your insurance or the savings card?" etc before the exam and appointment even started, I have to take away those two stars. When the time comes for another exam, I'm not sure if I'll be coming back. We will see how long it takes for them to get back to me again. :( read more

But I appreciated how the experience at Dr. Chinn's was effortless. An acquaintance, Vina who works there referred me. their office has customer parking so I didn't have to stress about that part. The store is brightly lit, clean, organized and not overwhelming. The staff was polite and very helpful. Dr. Chinn was thorough in the exam process and set me up with Mo, who was patient with me as I looked the selection over, twice, because I'm indecisive. But ultimately she helped me pick a frame that was a similar look but definite upgrade from what I walked in with. We cannot say enough great things about our visit to Dr. Chinns' Vision Care. We have Kaiser and have always used their doctor's for eye exams. We now also have a great VSP insurance plan so we decided to try an independent provider. What a phenomenal experience!! EVERYONE in the office was SO helpful and personable, it made the visit really easy. One of us was there for a comprehensive eye exam and I simply wanted to purchase new glasses with an existing prescription. To say the eye exam was comprehensive is NOT an exaggeration. Neither of has ever had such a detailed exam with a doctor who took so much time explaining everything he saw and ensuring we understood it all. Dr. Chinn was just amazing, thorough, and patient! I wish more doctors were this way. Mo, wow, where do I start? I was seeking only glasses and I NEVER find it easy to decide on a new frame. Mo earned her money working with me! I looked at so many frames and she patiently assisted & suggested when I needed it. Meanwhile, when Wendy wasn't with another client, she provided additional input on my insurance, as well as adding some fun conversation. Emily patiently did her work behind the front desk and interjected some helpful information as well as more engaging conversation and helpful tips. When I learned how comprehensive Dr. Chinn's exam was, I decided to schedule for myself before purchasing the glasses. I was fortunate they had some time before the next client, and got me in right then and there. I had a couple issues the Kaiser folks had never mentioned or addressed, yet Dr. Chinn noticed right away and gave me home treatment plan that should help. My better half has had an ongoing vision issue which the Kaiser doc recently dismissed, however Dr. Chinn ordered another test that will help him better understand and hopefully address the issue. This is NOT to bash Kaiser, it's simply to point out how great and thorough Dr. Chinn is, and that, as an independent doctor, he can set his schedule and spend the time needed. Overall, this was an amazing experience and we will definitely be back to Dr. Chinn and HAPPILY refer others to him. Other than a wild lazy eye when I was 7 that required glasses to correct, I've lived pretty much my entire life with 20/20 vision. As I've progressed into my late 30s however, I've felt my vision begin to slip at times and so I figured it was only a matter of time before I'd have to join the glasses gang. I recently got VSP vision insurance through a new job and so I knew it was time to get my eyes looked at. I found Dr. Chinn's Vision Care through the VSP website as a preferred provider with additional benefits, and since they're literally a block away from me I didn't hesitate to make an appointment for a vision test. From the very first call they couldn't have made me feel any more comfortable about the process especially in the age of COVID. They informed me immediately that they had upgraded all their equipment so that there would be no contact with the eye or any solution used. There would be an additional charge but it seemed reasonable and they definitely explained the why. When I arrived for my appointment a few days later, once again the experience couldn't have felt more safe and thoughtful. They had me perform the eye tests with 4 different machines before having me visit with Dr. Chinn himself, who was personable and funny and had me realize right away what I was expecting -- it was in fact time for glasses, but just for screens and work. He explained that it would be a custom-made lens to meet my specific needs; it all sounded very modern and cool. He had me visit with a couple other members of the team in order to select glasses that were right for me. Not only does Dr. Chinn's Vision Care have a wide range of name brands and options, but they have a specialty discount program that made a pair of Calvin Klein frames virtually free. The women who helped me -- one of them may have been Dr. Chinn's daughter -- were extremely thorough and helped me find frames that were perfect for me. I wanted some big old stupid hipster glasses and they helped me find the most appropriate proximation that also fit my extremely large head and face. All in all, the entire visit, the custom lenses, and the designer frames with specialty fitting and follow-up all came out to around $240, which felt like just a stupid ridiculous deal. The first visit was efficient and I never felt like I was there any longer than I should have. Everyone was so helpful and expedient, and that continued on the follow-up visit once my glasses came in. If you are looking for a new eye doctor I really can't say enough nice things about Dr. Chinn's Vision Care. Literally the very best experience for which I could have hoped. read more

I have been putting off getting my eyes checked for awhile. Real life makes it difficult to take time out for an exam but it should have been priority. It became a priority when I ran out of contact lenses and broke my only pair of glasses at the same time. I called Dr. Chinn's office and was able to get a next day appointment. The person who answered the phone, Morena, was happy, polite and friendly. She told me that they would gladly accept my insurance and I was set. The next day, I arrived 15 min early but they were prepared and we got started right away. The whole process went smooth and painless. Place is all right, but REQUIRE a retinal exam for a general eye exam which adds $39 to your visit. All I needed was an eye exam, but retinal exams are MANDATORY. Nothing should be mandatory if I just want a check up. Keep this in mind if you are just trying to update your prescription. When I told them I didn't want to take the retinal exam and would find somewhere else to get the exam, girls in the front got all huffy and puffy. Not very professional in my opinion. read more

I was born with congenital cataracts (removed at a young age through multiple surgeries), so fitting me for corrective lenses is no easy task. Not only is he very knowledgeable and skilled, but is also a doctor who seems to genuinely CARE about his patients. I miss having an eye doctor experience as great as that which I had with Dr. Chinn! Dr. Chinn was my eye doctor back when I lived in San Diego from 2012 through 2016. My eye doctors since then have left a lot to be desired, and helped drive me to give Dr. Chinn this review: Dr. Chinn himself was a very personable, intelligent, and efficient eye doctor, but what put this business over the top for me was his supporting team! The team that supported Dr. Chinn was extremely friendly and helpful. For example, rather than make me cut up my contact lens boxes and gather receipts to obtain my refund from the contact lens company, Dr. Chinn's team took care of all of that for me, so all I had to do was sit back and wait for my refund to arrive! 3 years have passed since Dr. Chinn was my eye doctor, and not an eye appointment goes by that I wish Dr. Chinn was still my eye doctor.
