MODERN LUXURY EYE WEAR (5 stars) Get your eyes checked! Majority of us, if not all, pay for these health benefits every pay check and we don't use them. Mind you, your eyes are very important organs - get them checked. With that in mind, I decided to pick a good place based off of reviews because the past few years I went to "convenient places" with an optometry section (Costco, Target) and haven't had that great of service. Back to going to smaller independent optometrist for better overall service. I scheduled the earliest appointment which was about a week out and didn't have any preference on Dr. I ended up getting assigned to Dr. Phu! Depending on time of day, the area can be difficult to find parking - my appointment was at 5:45pm when everyone's coming home and had a difficult time looking for parking and was almost running late to my appointment. I was quickly brought to the back examination room. EXAM. Eye exam with the benefits I have - $10. went with the comprehensive eye exam. There were two options, one to get your eyes diluted (the oldskool way) or not (the newskool way) but with an additional $40 fee. I went this route. Did the regular read letters in different sizes. Then moved to 4 machines that did a variation of testing to check the health of the eyes and etc, do more testings, and take a picture of the anatomy of the eye. Happy to hear everything is fine and I am close to 20/20 vision - although I have worn bifocals since I was 8yrs old and told by several optometrist I have slight stigmatism in my right eye. This exam, there was no stigmatism - if there is it's probably so minor it's not noticeable. And no signs of glaucoma! The exam was about 30m. I reviewed my prescription right away and was not pushed to buy glasses here. FRAME SELECTIONS Very high-end and unique frames! Have you ever seen someone with amazing eyewear and wonder why they got their glasses because it stand out - this is the kind of place where you would get them. The frames here are very pricy but they are also very unique. Many cool ones with personality and pop but my character is very basic and simple that those wouldn't fit me. I asked about what if I brought in my own frames outside (brand new) and they are willing to work with you to get lenses for them. Of course addition paperwork will be filled. I continue to love coming to Urban Optics for my eye exam and unique eyewear purchases. Dr. Jalsingh is an excellent Optometrist! She answers my many questions and explains all of the exam results, especially comparing my retina digital scans over time. She gave me recommendations for new eyedrops to help with my dry eyes and also provided recommendations for retinal specialists to get a second opinion. She's very friendly and easy to talk with and I trust her professional evaluations and recommendations. Patti helped me find several new frames that I didn't select while shopping online and I absolutely love my 2 new frames! I like that she not only adds more frames that seem in line with the frames I tend to like as well as shows me other frames that she thinks could look good with my face shape. Customer care is superb here and I recommend Urban Optiks to the many people who ask me where I got my frames. It's the only place I've found for unique frames. Yes, some of these unique frames will be pricey, esp if you don't have any eyewear insurance. However, the frames I've purchased are of the highest quality and will last a long time. Since I have to wear glasses the entire day, I have to like what I wear and they need to fit well and be comfortable. I've always found the best frames here! I had read a lot of reviews and choose Urban Optiks with very high expectations due to the many positive reviews. They easily met those expectations. I appreciated being able to communicate by phone (especially making appointments) and any calls were answered quickly and efficiently. The office was easy to find (including parking--I must've lucked out!) and was very clean and inviting. I chose very inexpensive glasses and did not feel like they tried to up-sell me beyond what I wanted. I had planned to get the glasses elsewhere but am glad I changed my plans and used their services. The glasses themselves are fine for my needs--a little more plastic-y that I expected but I'm pleased with them and with the pricing. They gave me a hard case for the glasses which means I won't destroy them too quickly. They also included lens cleaner (which they will refill) and a lens cloth. I had an appointment here on 11/1 at 3 PM to convert my glasses from single vision to progressive. During my first visit, the doctor was excellent and took the time to explain different lens options, including an "office view" progressive lens, which was new to me. I decided to try it, but after using it for a bit, I realized it wasn't a good fit. When I came back for my second visit, I saw another doctor who was also very patient and helpful. She walked me through the options again, and together with the assistant, we decided to switch to a single vision lens. I really appreciated the professionalism and care from both doctors -- they were knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely focused on helping me find what worked. However, my third visit (11/1/25 at 3 PM) was a very different experience. I only met with the same assistant this time, and when I explained that I was having trouble and constantly taking the glasses on and off to see clearly, the response was dismissive. I was told, in a condescending tone, "So they worked a few weeks ago and now they don't?" She also insisted that my prescription was too low for progressive lenses and that "nothing" could be done. This was frustrating -- especially because I've successfully worn progressive lenses before. A week later, I went to another optometry shop and was immediately told that my prescription is absolutely within range for progressives and can be done without issue. That confirmed my instinct that the problem was not the prescription -- it was the guidance I received during that visit. One additional note: after my first two visits, I received automated texts asking about my experience. After the third visit, no feedback text was sent -- only a message promoting their online glasses shop. That didn't go unnoticed. In summary: The doctors/optometrists here are excellent -- thorough, patient, and skilled. The front staff experience, unfortunately, did not match that same level of care. I believe this could be a great practice with some attention to customer service consistency, especially at the front desk. read more

i have bought several pairs of glasses from urban optiks in San Diego. this business has no ability to fit glasses to a head. each adjustment makes the frames less usable. the most recent visit has damaged the frames, what's a few hundred dollars to somebody who has already sold a product? i hope their eye exams are better than the after-sale abilities of this establishment read more

URBAN OPTIKS OPTOMETRY. I went in today for a basic first time eye exam. I told the provider I woke up with a little sniffles no fever no cough. I do have allergies. As courtesy I said I will put on a mask, I placed my mask on before contact. He still refused to take me in. As a consumer and a healthcare provider this is unacceptable. How many healthcare providers see patients day in day out with unknown conditions/symptoms NO mask... yet we still provide care. Mind you I've told him I've had a vision changes and this exam is really important. Yet he still refuses. If he's worried about getting a common cold you can catch that anywhere, I tried to educate him but Not receptive, he said I can get you another appointment day with another provider here..: that's just trying to pass the buck. No thanks. I am trying to make an appointment with another optometrist and they still want to claim me as a patient when I clearly stated I will Not be returning Sadly terrible experience. read more

I've been coming to urban optiks for years- not sure why I haven't done a review - likely it's because I generally don't use Yelp for medical providers. However, I have always had a positive experience and yesterday Dr J and Patti were so amazing that I decided to write this. Patti checked me in, helped me fill out all the necessary paperwork, and after my exam was so supportive in helping me find the right pair of glasses that fit my budget. She even picked out the glasses I ultimately chose! Dr J was likely the most supportive optometrist I have ever had. I have some anxiety around some parts of the exam and she was so patient and supportive that it really helped me manage my anxiety. And she took a lot of time to talk me through my prescriptions and what would help relieve some of my eye exhaustion because I sit in front of a computer all day. I made a last minute appointment at a random optometry, which my VSP insurance would be accepted, and my appointment for the eye exam went smooth. I was nervous about going there as a deaf patient. I understood what Peggy said for the most part by reading her lips, but I think she did a great job by showing me the visual paper regarding the diagnostic and refractive exam, did some gestures, and did write some info about price on the paper. It was just that I was able to understand her based on facial expression, and body language. Good vibe! Emelline Chen, the optometrist, was nice. I barely understood what she said because she talked too fast and she didn't look at me for the most part. After the process, I told her to write/type about the condition of my eyes and distance single vision, which it was important for me to be informed. I think I must be her first deaf patient, who knows I did look at the huge selections of eyeglasses and those eyeglasses were something you cannot find in other eyeglasses shop!!!! I totally fell in love with Matsuda eyeglasses, but it was too way over my budget. I ended up going home with the prescription paper, but I was glad that Peggy was patient with me and seemed to be understandable that I couldn't afford those eyeglasses I really liked. For months I'd been struggling with them sliding down my nose but wasn't comfortable with any up-close experience during the pandemic. Our insurance changed and I had some slight vision changes so I went to the HMO for an exam. Making the appointment was difficult, I had my eye exam, then pondered the boring frame choices. I have been a client of Urban Optiks for over 20 years. It is hands down the most professional, experienced optometry business in San Diego. I am in the design business and must wear glasses. I am very particular about what I wear on my face and was originally drawn to UO because of their SUPERB collection of high end, fashion frames.. I was purchasing many of my frames in Europe and didn't trust just anyone to put my lenses in my "investment" so I went decided to visit them. They also accept VSP insurance and I decided to go to Dr. Gary Klein for my exam. I was unhappy with my Dr. in La Jolla (one of the best in the industry) who could not get my prescription right. I wear a prism and have a very difficult time finding someone who can prescribe my lenses properly. I was tired of all of the lense redo's and cost and time involved. My immediate impression of their shop was CUTTING EDGE technology! Dr. Klein has a major investment in all of his equipment. He was so very friendly, knowledgeable and determined to help me and he did! He took a lot of time getting to know me and my specific issues. He was the ONLY Dr. that had ever gotten my prescription spot on in my adult life. I was very impressed. Fast forward all these years and I have come to a point where I need vision therapy so Dr. Klein referred me to another Dr. Not only did he do that he took the time to call this new Dr. ahead of my appointment to fully explain my history to him. Dr Klien did a great job with my wife and I today. I was long overdue for an exam and have both astigmatism and issues with farsightedness. But more importantly, the optometrist is very thorough and comforting, and their shop has all the cutting edge technology. I've been seeing Dr. Klein for several years after a recommendation by a friend who happened to live a few blocks away. The service has always been great, the eye care spectacular with state of the art equipment (far better than what you'll find at the eye care center at Costco, for example) and Dr. Klein takes the time to listen to any concerns, family history or issues and explains eye care clearly and professionally. My eyes don't change that much, so I'm on a 2 year exam schedule (by my choice). The only hiccup was several years back, I think I got automatically scheduled for an exam that I wasn't ever told about and received a call mentioning a missed appointment. I'm sure it was an oversight (get the pun), and I've never had poor customer service from anyone on the staff. They only have two drawbacks. 1) Parking is sometimes hard to find and is often metered and 2) their glasses are more expensive, more designer, than you can find else where. I just need basic reading/computer glasses, so I didn't really need haute fashion glasses, but the styles they have range from contemporary to cutting edge and everything in between.
