The gym itself is okay BUT the staff needs improvement. Specifically Jacob Stein. His inability to show compassion and push an insignificant situation to the point of public humiliation on a recovering cancer patient is inexcusable. Shame on you Jacob!!! I recently used the lap pool a couple of times and found it dirty. When I asked the lifeguards about it they explained that the vacuum had broken in summer / fall 2025 and they don't clean the pool. I reached out to the Aquatics Director, Kari Price, and after getting no response in just over two weeks I asked to speak with someone above her. Jacob Stein, Branch Director, approached me & said you wanted to talk to me? I tired to explain the issue when he asked me: How do you know it was dirt Did you put it there Maybe Kari has been out of the office The lifeguards aren't telling the truth I asked him if he was trying to pick a fight with me, he said I was being aggressive as I tried to explain what the issue was. There was no resolution as I could see he was not going to help. read more

Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. There are lots of the free weight type machines. There are limited machines that you adjust the weight with pins, though. They are also located in two different rooms so if you can't get the machines you want in a row in one room, you go back and forth and end up waiting a lot. Some people do ten reps and then sit and play on their phones for ten minutes. Machines can be in use for half an hour or more with some people. The lack of machines makes it impossible to keep going while your muscles are warmed up and ready. You waste a lot of time waiting around. Don't expect to use the same machines or be able to use them in order or you'll be there all day. I have to go in the mornings due to other obligations. That's when the trainers have groups of people they're working with. I guess since those groups are paying for membership AND the trainer, they get first dibs on everything. The one room with the rowing machines is off limits when the trainer has a session and he has sessions all morning. I paid the ridiculous joiner's fee and the monthly fee, but I don't get access to equipment I would like to use that's nowhere else because of the training group. The group's music is loud and the people are even louder. The trainer is rude to anyone not in his group. He physically blocked me from a machine the last time I was there because his person had one more set. His person was resting between the sets. I would have been done with my whole workout, but I just left without finishing. Trainers and their people should have a separate area to do their thing so they don't interrupt all the other paid members. The facility needs more machines that aren't the free weight variety. Doesn't matter to me anymore. I'm done with the place. It's not worth the frustration. read more

My family and I tagged along w/ my husband on his business trip. He had to work in Ark City but he needed some items from Lowes so we drove by and this Y looked amazing from the street! I called and asked what time the outdoor pool opened and how much a day pass would be, and also informed them we were Y members of the Kansas City area. The girl who answered the phone was so nice. She said we got in for free since we're members and all they had to do was call our Y to varify the membership. When we got there the front desk was a little slow but other than that everything went smoothly. I saw someone cleaning the family locker rooms when I got there so I thought they were pretty clean. The women's locker room was nice and clean. And It looked like there were tons of people at the pool but it was never crowded and I didn't have a problem finding a chair either! We had an awesome time and an amazing experience at this Y, I wish ours was as nice is this one :). We spent hours here and on a quick trip where we were suppose to go home right away we came back a second time! read more

If I could give this place a 0 stars I would. After a little research I discovered this place is named after a Dr. Jim Farha who recently passed away. A surgeon and long time supporter of YMCA and Co-founder of Wichita Surgical Specialists. Knowing all that only makes me more upset at what I witnessed yesterday because I think he would be incredibly embarrassed at the total lack of sanitation and lack of any sort of protocol following. I was present for a 2/27/21 girls and boys basketball tournament. First, the place smelled horrendous. It had that disgusting corn chip, BO smell that just hit you in the face immediately on arrival. It's a gym, I get it. But I've been to plenty of gyms and YMCAs in the area that do not have that smell. Just pure negligence during after hours cleaning is what it was. I don't know what protocols are in place for Butler county right now during this pandemic but if there are any in place at all I guarantee you they were not being followed nor were they even attempting to enforce. The place was absolutely packed. No social distancing. I saw a total of two signs reminding people to social distance. Even not during a pandemic I don't care for people being as close to me as they were it was that packed. I counted upwards of 100 parents or family members either not wearing masks at all or not wearing them properly. Defeats the purpose of the rest of us attempting to follow mandated protocol. Sanitizing stations? HA. There was one sanitizer bottle at the entrance which was clearly empty after a couple of hours. It's a crowded public athletic center, they should have sanitizer everywhere ANYWAY. By three o'clock both trash cans by the entrances were filled 2 feet above the rim with trash piled around it. In the gym itself no dry mopping the courts between games (which should be standard, pandemic or not so kids don't slip and fall) and the chairs for the teams, unsanitized between games. None of the tables where the clock and score were being managed sanitized. None of the doors were propped open coupled with the before mentioned no sanitizer. Thousands of hands touching all the doors? My partner and I were so absolutely disgusted (we both are frontline workers by the way) and wanted to leave but we were there for his daughter. We were there 7 entire hours and never once was anything wiped down. I think sports are great for kids. Normalcy of any kind after last year is good. But there are ways to do it safely and it's like whoever was in charge didn't care. But what they DID care about was charging adults 10 dollars per person for a what would be considered a filthy facility even before covid. Trash overflowing, horrible smell, trash bits all over the courts because kids will be kids. If this is how you honor a renowned former pillar of the community you should be embarrassed. read more

I've been going to this Y off and on for 4 years since I moved to Andover. Don't have enough good things to say about it!! Here's the breakdown: Facilities - great equipment, large running track (8 laps/mile), 3 full size bball courts, and much more. Kids Zone - I drop my kids off here and the staff are super nice. Don't know how they manage all the craziness of all the kids that run around in there, but my kids have had a positive experience here while I work out. Swimming Pool indoor/outdoor - Fantastic. To think that a family can pay about $50/mo year round for all their workout needs AND a lazy river/water slide/splash pad - what more can you ask for. Security - There are some odd reviews on here talking about how things are stolen and there wasn't a camera to prove anything - I don't know about that, but I've never had anything stolen except the occasional lazy person that takes my used sweat towel (have fun with that!). In fact, once I accidentally left my kids' KU mini basketballs at the Y one night, and a few weeks later remembered and came to the front desk and sure enough, somebody had turned them in!! So there you have it, you'll enjoy your time here. It's state-of-the-art. They get new workout equipment regularly. The hours are fantastic, you can come almost any time of day or night. Your kids can swim, run, climb, do gymnastics, dance, play basketball, or just play video games. And you can drop them off for a couple hours while you go get your workout in. After going to Planet Fitness in my college town all school year, the Y is an absolute disaster in comparison. This YMCA has declined so much in the last several months. The whole facility is so dirty. There is so much trash in the cup holders of weights, and the bathroom always look and smell horrendous! There are often times no towels upstairs, or the front desk just does not want to bring them up. There are always little kids on the cardio machines and weights, even though signs say they are not to be, but it is not enforced by the staff. Front desk seldom says hi or bye. I would suggest going to Planet Fitness if you're looking for a membership, even if you have to make the extra drive to Wichita!! read more

I may be a bit biased, because I used to work here, but I believe it really deserves the 5-stars. The Andover Y is only 4.5 years old, and still looks brand new. You walk in to a huge lobby area with a "Y" fountain. There is a three story rock climbing wall right when you walk in. The indoor park is a great place to spend some time during the summer afternoons. There is a little indoor pool park, and eight lane lap pool. Upstairs has an 1/8th mile indoor track, HUGE state of the art weight room. A lot of cardio machines facing flat screen TV's (some have their own TV's on them as well!) There are four basketball courts, and I believe three racquetball courts, daycare, and KidZone. Staff is more than friendly and willing to help you out with anything. Never had a problem there. Very clean as well. I'm happy to say I work out here almost daily. read more

YMCA was always a controversial topic for some working people of Wichita -- for some reason, stuff is stolen out of locked-up lockers of many adults and vehicles messed with during workouts too. The kids will harass adults too and seems the staff just accept the fact of working with the YMCA is some gritty crap happening behinds the scene they needed to cover up - such as install MALE-WALLET size lockers outside in lobby in camera view, which have been stolen from too without anything recoverable from the camera recorder-server. The wrong people know who we were (sex assault victims, got threatened by wealthy person recently, ex-wives, unwilling mistresses or activists in the community) and got verbally harassed and stolen from using the YMCAs eventually. People of Wichita just age out of the YMCA sometimes.... You find a lot of us exercising at home, trying out the smaller gym chains, pay a fortune to start at Genesis with a long contract or check out Wichita Park Department Rec centers. The HONOR SYSTEM doesn't interest lots of people for a long time, many who just added this BS to the long list of reasons to look for work in a better place and abandon Wichita. Eventually, the oldsters come back because they get a YMCA membership FREE with their health insurance...By this time, the oldsters just leave their car keys and wallets in lockers during swim or yoga classes and leave it all unlocked under honor system. THIS CRAP HAPPENS AT ALL THE WICHITA YMCA BY THE WAY! read more

Nice facility and mostly clean. Weights are well stocked and laid out, often busy during peak hours but you can usually work in within 5-10 minutes. A little pricey but worth it particularly if you want to use the entire setup that is available (cardio, weights, classes, kid sports, pool, etc). read more

I'll start with the gym. It's wonderful, very big and expansive, and offers tons of machines so you're never left waiting. Super clean too, I wish the towels were replenished more often. The indoor pool is cramped and always busy with swimming lessons, which is understandable. However some seating would be ideal, at least hooks for bags and towels. The outside pool is huge, and entertaining. The concrete around the pool is always littered with mystery items, and trash, which is a major turn off. Tons of watchful life guards though. Childcare is where I have my issue. It brought our month bill up quite a bit and I use it rarely. My child doesn't like going. I can't blame her, 9 times out of 10 I'm greeted by a quiet, sometimes annoyed, young person. I think I've only encountered one person that seemed to genuinely like children. It's so hard for me to enjoy my workout when I feel like I'm putting someone out, and that my child isn't around someone who likes her. On more than one occasion my daughter complained another child hit or scratched her. I always shrug it off but I can't help but wonder if she's getting good care. Also I was told to not allow my child to bring her stuffed animal. Look I don't like interacting with people either but, common curtesy is acknowledging someone has walked up to you, looking them in the eye, greet them, greet the child, assure parent/child that fun will be had, and say so long. It's just kills me :( thankfully school starts soon and I will drop child care all together. I thought about the summer camp for my daughter until I had these interactions. One more issue. When signing up for the membership I wasn't given a breakdown of my charges, I wasn't adequately explained them, or even told what my monthly payment would be. I asked questions but was never given an answer. I asked for a breakdown of the membership with charges and was given a screen shot of payments I've made. Love the waterpark in the summer. My kids really enjoy going there and the helpfulness of the staff. However, my favorite thing is the Sports Program and the positive atmosphere that Matt Wintz creates. It is a league of inclusion and a desire for kids of all talent levels to improve and be involved. read more

So Hot in the gym in the summer and winter...... Who ever designed all those windows is an idiot. Little kids running all over the weight room and using cardio equipment, despite the flyers unattractively plastered on the walls. Constantly dirty and broken equipment and inattentive "trainers". Never any of the "supplied" towels either. The building is big though.... So there's that.... Bahahahahah! Oh and the clumps of hair in the women's showers are delightful! read more

Nice, professional, helpful staff. Although we belong to the Y in another state and were using our Away cards, the staff at the Andover Y treated us really well, unlike at the Woodlawn Y (see my review for that place). The locker rooms could have been cleaner, but the pools and weight machines were great. read more
