NOT SAFE FOR DISABLED/HIGH RISK INDIVIDUALS…read more I have been a patient at Amberlea Dental since I was a young child. I am someone who is high risk for COVID-19, and needs to continue taking precautions. The last few times I have been to Amberlea Dental, the receptionists have been very bad about wearing masks, taking them off to speak, wearing them incorrectly, etc. When I entered what was supposed to be my most recent appointment this week, every single person at the reception desk had their masks under their chins. I firmly pointed it out and asked if they could put them on, and they all sighed, one giving an audible "oh God." Because of this extremely rude response, I brought it up to my dental nurse, and explained how their refusal to wear masks makes it dangerous for me to access treatment. She was dismissive, and told me if I could speak to the manager if I wanted to. I said I would like that, which was when I then learned the manager was one of the unmasked receptionists. She fought with me publicly, stating that she didn't need to wear one as it's a "personal choice." I told her that as a healthcare worker, she has a responsibility to make her facility accessible to disabled and high risk patients. She said it wasn't any of her responsibility, and said to my face that she doesn't need to keep at risk patients safe. I said that infecting a disabled or high risk person could result in their death, and tried to confirm that she was saying this meant nothing to her. I said, "so you don't care if you give a disabled person COVID and kill them?" and she responded, "no. Why Would I? That's not my problem." During the argument she also tried to tell me that COVID isn't an airborne virus, when I said her not wearing a mask makes it dangerous for me to be treated because air circulates throughout the building, she told me her "mouth particles" can't get through the closed door, displaying a clear lack of understanding of how the virus even works. She tried to back herself up by saying that she doesn't mask anywhere else either, and then got frusturated when I said that was an even larger issue because it puts the high risk in even more danger to be exposed to her. The entire reception team and my dental nurse ganged up against me, talking over me and cutting me off in the waiting room in full view of other patients. I was asked if I was going to "stop arguing and go to my appointment, or leave," so I walked out, and will be seeking a new dentist. This kind of unprofessional and eugenicist behaviour from any healthcare worker, but especially one that works in an environment where at risk people have no choice but to be maskless, is abhorrent and disgraceful. They do not care in the slightest for the safety of vulnerable people in the community, and have no issue voicing it loudly and publicly. To all other high risk people, save your time and your stress and go somewhere else. I am beyond disgusted and shocked.

I'll admit that you need to be careful when choosing a hygienist - some of them are really rough and others are not so much (and I think this is true of almost all dental offices), but all of them are fairly talkative and make the time in the chair go by pretty quickly. You always get a choice of cleaning paste flavor (cherry, bubblegum or mint) and when I was a kid, they had wicked fluoride flavors, tutti frutti. The best part about this place is that they'll work with you to make sure you get what you need. I was without benefits for a while and as such, they were willing to try and keep the cost down for the sake of my wallet. My boyfriend is in need of a custom nightguard and we need to front some of the cost as my benefits doesn't cover it all and they were more than happy to offer him a payment plan to ensure he got his night guard sooner than later (and they were more concerned with him getting the nightguard it seemed!). When I was a kid, there were only 2 dentists or so here and now the number has increased quite a bit, but all of them are very nice, very thorough and explain everything as they go along. I had my wisdom teeth out last year in-office (no hospital for me) and recently had one cavity filled and another existing filling redone and both experiences were good. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I had complications by no fault of the dentist, but they were willing to answer questions and had me in just to make sure everything was progressing properly when I was worried (and no charge on that visit). The two very best things about Amberlea Dental are: The Staff: All of the front office staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating (and when you're due for a cleaning, you always get vice nice pleasant voicemails asking for a call back) and they all seem to care about the patients The Hours: They're open until 9PM almost every night of the week, open on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. This makes it easy for you to get off work at 6, head to get your teeth cleaned at 7 and be home in time for a late dinner. Even for me coming from Toronto, I never have a problem if I'm running late: I've had to call them a few times and they've been nothing but accommodating. If you live in the area and are trying to decide what dentist to go to, this is a safe bet!

I've been a customer since 2002…read more Dr Paul Stratis performed my work in 2002 and I can confirm his work is excellent and stood the test of time. I had two crowns put in and they both were of superior craftsmanship, and I've enjoyed trouble free teeth since then. I made one big mistake in roughly 2007 but switching to a dentist closer to my new work location at that time. Live went on. Come 2019 I had a tooth that presented some issues and suddenly needed a rush root canal. I had issues locating a provider and decide to call up my old dentist and ended up being placed with Dr Nick Stratis, Paul's son. I can safely say the talent runs in the family. Nick was expert in his needle work, he performed the root canal quickly and expertly (on a rear molar the work is much more detailed). I had a temporary filling and a prescription for antibiotics in case the infection spread. Things recovered quickly. I went back for more detailed work and my new crown. Like before the finishing work was quick, clean, and expertly performed. I love my new crown. Absolutely no tooth or jaw alignment issues. Lastly, I should mention no great dental office is complete without great tooth cleaning experts. All of the staff who clean my teeth have done excellent work, and leave me walking away with super clean teeth and gums. It shows every time I smile. I feel obligated to maintain a great dental health routine just to not disappoint the staff on my next visit. And finally staff who run the front counter and manage appointments have been professional, organized, and super accommodating, when I've had to make schedule adjustments. I'll be going to this office for my dental work even if I move out of province. I'll find a way.

They are professional, courteous and I find it amazing that they can remain so calm when dealing with screaming kids, parents, patients in pain, etc, etc, etc. Everyone that works at this centre are fantastic: from the reception staff to the dental assistants/hygenists...all have personality plus. They make visiting this office a pleasure. The exam rooms are spotless, as is the waiting room and reception area. A small playroom is available to keep the small ones entertained so they're not focused on where they're at. A TV and magazine rack are used to entertain those of us too big for the play room....it is a welcome distraction when you're waiting for someone to stick some sort of pain inducing instrument in your mouth! Kudos to both of them for creating such a welcoming environment and for being the epitome of what a dentist should be.

This review has been long in the making!…read more I have been going to Dr. Shirley's dental practice for a few years now after many more years of unsatisfactory service with previous dentists. There are three main things I look for in a dentist: 1) Service/Care 2) Affordability 3) Visible Improvement 1. As soon as you walk into their quaint office you are greeted with a smile or two from the reception desk. Whether you are a walk-in or a regular, they know how to take care of you. Dr. Shirley has an excellent small team that you quickly get to know over just a few visits. I don't really like phone calls when I am at work and so they offered email appointment reminders and even automated text messaging to confirm or cancel appointments (which is a huge plus for me!). Dr. Shirley and her hygienist are good at what they do and they do it well. I thought my first few cleanings with them were painful but that was simply because I had not given oral health a priority in my life. Not only are they good at what they do, but they also educate you on the "hows" and "whys" of oral hygiene and personal cleaning regiments. I wasn't an avid flosser at all until Dr. Shirley & team encouraged me to floss regularly and I am happy with the results! 2. I have insurance coverage from my company but it doesn't take away the fact that their office administration fully mediates my bills and payments with my insurance company. They give me an update of my coverage and leftover balance upon request and it saves me so much time and needless paperwork. I have paid in cash a few times and their prices are comparable to surrounding practices in the area if not even cheaper due to their location. Plus they give you promotional coupons and gift cards for referring new clients. 3. Once in a while they still show me the x-ray of my teeth/gums from when I first came to them. Visible improvements indeed! I still have work to do over the next little while but Dr. Shirley and her team have been such a great help in the process. Note: One comment I do have is with schedules and time. If you know that you have a tight schedule on the day of your appointment, let the office know ahead of time. There have been a few times when my appointment was delayed for up to 15 minutes and while this doesn't affect me much, I know how it can be an issue for others. If they are ever running late with appointments (due to other patients arriving late) they are very apologetic about it and honestly I think it says more about their patients than it does about their practice. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Shirley's Dentistry especially if you are in the Scarborough area. She is a knowledgeable, experienced, good-humoured dentist supported by an excellent team of skilled, friendly assistants. Plus they give you a bag of goodies on your way out (no not candy, that would be counterintuitive)! The only thing missing short of 5 stars is a latté machine in their waiting area.
