    Split Kick Demonstration (part 1)

[Review #130; refer to Review #129 for the Torrance studio located on Sepulveda Blvd. & Hawthorne Blvd.] Today [09/19/15] was H's Taekwondo promotion/yellow belt test at the Torrance PCH studio instead of the regular location. I'm glad we came [20-mins.] early as there were probably close to 50 students getting their next belt (white - purple). As we walked in, I could see H's masters & masters from the other studios going through warm-ups to help the students prep for their test. In case they get nervous & forget? Whatever the reason, I thought it was beneficial to have a quick run-through to rid of the nerves, butterflies, etc. The class size was overwhelming (& that's counting the dozen or so stragglers who came late) so H sat on Dad's lap until it was time. At 9:55 AM, we started to nudge H to start lining up but was a bit scared to go. One of the female masters noticed, knelt down, & gently spoke to her. H let go of Dad & she ran through some of her punches, kicks, & poomse with Master Woo. When she was done, she waved to us & got in line. The higher belts were tested first, followed by a couple of demonstrations by all the masters (as a teaser for the demonstrations they'll perform at tomorrow's potluck picnic; see video), wrapping up with the white belts' test. As large as the class was... chaos & confusion was to be expected... or so I thought. Even with 50+ students, everything ran fairly smoothly, especially the transitions between each belt; minor exceptions due to the younger/newer students. The only hitch I had was another parent stepping in front of me while H was breaking the board. I had already reminded him twice (because he kept getting in my way) that I was taking photos & planning to film. Since the child he was shooting was on my right, he should move to my right instead of staying on my left & walking in front of me at inopportune times. I was mad as heck & ready to cry when he did it while H was breaking the board. However, my husband (& hero) came to save my day. After the test & ceremony was completed, he explained to one of the masters... H's kind & gracious Master Park understood my frustration, came over, & set-up a board for H. Maybe being 35+ weeks along helped. ;-) In any event, I ended up with an even better, personalized (with Master Park), upfront, unobstructed video of H breaking the board. Yay! =) This time I felt like crying because I was so happy for this memory. Initially, I thought Taekwondo was just going to be a physical but fun activity. I never expected H to apply her Taekwondo skills in real life (at least not this early on), just the rules: respect, discipline, etc. H has been in school since last week... this past week during kindergarten recess, she had to use her blocking skill because another kid was throwing sand at everyone. She then told the boy that he needs to be respectful in order to continue playing. When he didn't listen, she said she informed one of the teachers that he wasn't play nice & was throwing sand at their faces, including hers. So proud of my girl for watching out for herself & others. Thanks Masters Park & Ian!!

The competitive nature of that program and discipline didn't build her confidence much. Here, the practice is focused on the individual but also as a part of the collective team. No real sparring yet in the Little Samurai class, only some practice punches and kicks with chest protectors. Lots of punching bag practice for strength building and training. Lots of calisthenics as well with lunges, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, frog jumps, burpees, etc. Skills that they can use their whole lives and get stronger with. At the same time, there will be fun games like tag, dodgeball, red light green light to keep their interest and to work on reflexes. Excellent training in focus and active listening as well with focus claps, raising hands to speak, caring for others and awareness of everyone's space. These things I have not encountered in any other studio/dojo. I've seen many places that allow disruptive students or even parents. In contrast, here at 1st class, they don't teach blind discipline towards any instructor/owner but respect for one's self and each other. This alone is what keeps us coming back. This is what schools don't teach enough of. Not to mention the actual martial arts she is learning here. Channeling their chi into a strong Aiya, learning how to punch and kick correctly in self defense. Amazing program for little ones. Instructors are all black belts who are not only cordial, but also gentle yet firm. We fit in very well here and would highly recommend this program for little ones.

The lessons they learn on the mat carry over into everyday life, which is priceless. This is more than just a martial arts school. It is family-friendly, with decades of history in the South Bay, founded by Grand Master K.S. Choi and carried on by Master Danny Choi. The masters know every student by name, making each class feel personal and welcoming. The school offers elite-level competition training as well as regular classes for all students. They host school-wide events like holiday potlucks and "parents night out," and are active in the community with annual tournaments and student demos at local schools. If you want the best martial arts school in Palos Verdes and the South Bay, with high-quality training in a family-friendly atmosphere, K.S. Choi Taekwondo is the place to be.

The students seemed amazing as the teachers seemed to know how to work with the youth (young kids / children to older teens) effectively. That is always an important characteristic. If investigating martial arts schools, I'd definitely say check this place out for consideration. We visited KS Choi and the place was hard to find because for some odd reason, the outdoor complex it's located at does not have them listed on the directory or map. Maybe because they have their entry on the side road not internal main corridor they might not technically be a part of the complex... but if they are, they should definitely talk to the shopping center management to get better signage and support on the directory and map for customers to find them.

I felt she was too young to start TKD lessons because she was the shortest & only girl in class. H liked her teacher, Master Park, & he always made her feel welcomed & accepted. So we're back, almost 3 years later. H has mastered the basic foundation skills: poomse, punches, & kicks; she is ready to transition from her white belt & test for the yellow belt. The other masters are equally impressive... Master Ian has great form & skills when I watch him instruct the kids with higher color belts. He is also patient & sensitive... as I watched him deal with my l'il one's frustration one morning. Within seconds after talking to her, she straighten up & got in line to wait for the class to start. Master Park is a superb master & is great with kids. He alters from the serious TKD master to the kids' best buddy so they feel comfortable in class; this is especially important for the new students as the class (size) can be overwhelming. In addition to teaching martial arts, he also emphasizes respect to the teacher, your parents, & people. And his teaching overflows to H's everyday life outside of class - discipline, respectful, patience. I highly recommend this school for you or your kids!

Before finding STK, my daughter use to do Soo Bak Do and Karate. She hated any form of physical exercise, so I would force her to get off her ipad and take her to do these activities. Every Tuesday night on our nightly walks, we would see the Salim Tae Kwon Do Van and their students training at Aviation Park in Redondo Beach. The students looked hard core... meaning to me ... looked like Olympic level athletes!! ... When my daughter refused to go to Karate, I would threaten her that I would enroll her at Salim Tae Kwon Do! ... This threat worked well because she was absolutely terrified of STK, because she witnessed how they would train at the park. She would get ready in 3 mins and out the door! Refuse chores? .. I only needed to say two words.. "Salim, Salim!" .., and this would entice her to do her chores! Anyhoo... onto how I eventually enrolled her at STK. My daughter was being bullied by a few boys in her class. So I Dropped her out of Karate and enrolled her into Salim Tae Kwon Do. "THE BEST PARENTAL DECISION I EVER MADE!!!" It's been 7 months since joining Salim, and in that short period I have seen an incredible transformation. My daughter is no longer the cowardly introverted little punching bag! Nope, she walks with confidence, her head up, shoulders back and kicks high and her form is strong! I am truly amazed with the positive transformation and it's all thanks to the teaching skills of Master Salim and his team! After a much anticipated re-opening of Salim Tae Kwon Do, their doors have finally opened inside the Southbay Galleria Mall.
