This review is long overdue, and this place deserves a great one. My son has been with Taekwondo 21 for 3+ years now. What a journey it's been for him and for us to witness how much he's grown in his confidence, persistence, and courage in and outside of taekwondo. Much of that is credited towards Master Lee and his other instructors (his daughters) for instilling in each of their students to work hard towards a goal (black belt and beyond) and gain confidence in their art. Master Lee and the staff are very patient, super engaging and great with their students no matter what age. My son gets excited to go to class (and on time) and always strive to do better. Currently, I do believe for 1st time beginners, they do have a 4-week special for $99 with uniform included! That's a great deal imho but for how long? I don't know. Occasionally, they also offer fun activities aside from taekwondo class like movie nights, dodge ball nights, and summer programs. If you or your kids want to learn martial arts with great instructors, check this place out. I have and would definitely recommend this place to family and friends. Taekwondo21 has great lesson programs for each belt levels that builds physical strength as well as discipline and most importantly - RESPECT using the fundamental teaching of taekwondo. Master Lee of Taekwondo 21 is a World Class instructor from Yong In University Taekwondo team and is one of the best taekwondo master I've seen in my own eyes. My daughter did the 9 week trial. At first, she really enjoyed it. Master Lee is a good instructor. The class size was small. Jane, the lady who works there, said class sizes would remain small. However, as the weeks progressed, the class size got bigger and bigger. The class is 40 minutes long but a lot of time is spent watching. I would prefer my child to be constantly moving. Towards the end of the trial, a letter was handed to me, we had to commit to a one year contract to continue. It was also at this time that decided not to continue. My child has been a student of Master Lee for almost a year and we love this studio. I read some of the other reviews and wanted to give a more accurate rating. Classes start with a warm up & then Master Lee goes over form, blocks, punches, kicks and "combos". The students are constantly moving - they watch their teachers do a routine and then they do the routine themselves. I saw some people say "there's a lot of watching" which is not accurate. The students are constantly moving Inside the studio students are divided into groups with an instructor. I love this because each child is able to keep up with the instructor and the instructors are able to correct students if they mess up. They also do drills in class which is cool. Parking - there is parking in the front and in the back parking lot. Parents can park and then watch the class from outside the windows. Overall, I highly recommend this class. Master Lee is encouraging and patient. The students here really seem to enjoy themselves. This past year I can see my child gaining self confidence & discipline. Master Lee is a good instructor and has a positive attitude. The other two instructors are good as well. **Complaints** 1. Classes are too big. Want LESS WATCHING, MORE DOING. Sometimes there are up to 20-25 students per class. There is A LOT of wait time. I would say a third of the class time is spent watching other students and waiting patiently for your turn. My child is in a mixed belt color class (white, yellow, green, and blue). I notice that students with higher belt colors get less attention. Sometimes they do break them into groups based on belt colors and the other instructors work with them separately, but there are days when they spend most of the class time watching. If my child was a green or blue belt, I would NOT want them to be in this class. Unfortunately, a lot of the parents do not stay and watch so they are probably not aware. 2. Too easy to earn stripes. I noticed several times students who do not deserve a stripe are given one. A few incidences, where I thought my child did not do well enough to receive a stripe, to my surprise, they were given one. Some parents might prefer this so that their child is not discouraged, but I only want my child to receive it when they really deserve it and can do the movements fully, without hesitation. 3. Pricing should be made public. Brochures might be helpful. $130 for two classes a week (MUST sign a one-yr contract) $60 per belt testing $50 uniform 4. Not enough parking. Frequent threats of cars being towed. For now, I will keep my child in the class until I find something better. I am in the process of looking. I signed a one-year contract. FYI to get out of it, you have to give them 3 months' notice. read more

After being isolated from school and friends, our kids needed social interaction. Joining this studio was the best thing for our 5 year olds! Even when one of our boys seemed to have a hard time staying focused, the teachers and Master continued to challenge our son. I was a student and student sparring assistant for five years, back when it was Lee's Taekwondo 21 on 2130 W Redondo Beach Blvd. I left approximately a month after the grand opening of this current location. Even though it's been five years since I left, Master Lee still uses my photos for his website and magazine advertisements, kind of weird for me to see myself in them frankly. Master Lee and I had a close relationship. He is younger compared to many instructors, and was very energetic. There are appropriate times when he would be strict, but overall he is patient and helpful. His English is decent, it shouldn't be a problem understanding. This studio is in a pretty good location, or at least better than the old one. There's plenty of parking, and it is way more spacious. There's a liquor store in the same plaza, so there might be some concern about the people hanging around. However, the plaza is located on two busy streets. There's one bathroom in the back, and a small multipurpose room. Classes were very routine. We'd go over kicks and practice poomse forms. Sometimes we did group games like relay races, dodgeball, chicken fight. Fridays are sparring classes, where students put on protective gear and face off with another student. Although he tries to make taekwondo fun, martial arts is a business. There were approximately ten color belts before black when I was there, not sure if that has changed since I left. To go up, you have to pass a test, which he holds every couple months. There's a testing fee to participate. I was able to earn my black belt in two and a half years, which I felt was pretty fast. In all, fees add up quickly. I wasn't planning on leaving so soon, but during and after we moved to the new location, he lost his focus on the black belts. Many were leaving because he was taking longer to hold black belt tests, so classes were becoming a waste of money. At the time, he didn't sent students to compete at competitions, so there was also a lack of opportunities. He opened an Irvine studio (now closed), so his attention was divided between the two locations. He hired two other instructors, and we didn't react well to them. It honestly felt like they were babysitting us while Master Lee was gone. Finally, the black belt class was consolidated with the lower belts, which was perhaps a final nail in the coffin. We did not learn as much; classes were very unproductive. Another small reason why people started leaving was because Master Lee's wife started taking a more prominent role in the business, which affected it negatively. A lot of my friends left, so it was only a matter of time before I left too. I do miss this place, I made great friends and memories here. It's a fine establishment with good instructors. It's expensive in the long run, but learning taekwondo is a great way to stay fit and to brag to all your friends about how great you are. TKD 21 isn't as great as it was in my days, but it deserves a shot. read more
