I am returning to vinyl records and recently purchased a record player. I wanted to add reggae and classic R&B/soul artists to my father's blues collection and searched online for a local record shop. I was in Manassas and decided to check out Dragon Song. The owner, John, was personable and helpful and offered sound advice on vinyl records and caring for my new player. In addition to picking up albums from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley, I also picked up some handmade incense and a cleaning kit. Overall, it was a pleasant shopping experience, and I will return to Dragon Song the next time I am in Manassas. It is important to support local, small businesses! read more

Sorry if I disagree with your rating systems on your used records. But a 1967 album that has the cover worn, the sides split open, and the record falling out when picked up from the shelf, should NEVER be considered NM. The prices were no where near the levels found online, (data bases are there for a reason,) he used a book from who knows when to come up with the prices. Which even if accurate, (it may have been,) the grading was completely off base. The guys there seemed nice enough, don't think I don't appreciate the pleasant conversation. But when a new pressing is $8 to $10 dollars more than any other retailer, and the used albums are, in some cases, 100% or more overpriced, it is hard to spend that kind of money for an inferior product. read more

This is a new location for Dragon Song - although they've been at this location for a number of years now - many moons ago they were located in a small house off of Route 28 in the Yorkshire/Manassas Park section. Dragon Song carries used CDs, cassette tapes, and LPs - yes that's right - real vinyl albums! They also carry an assortment of other things: incense, figurines, wall tapestries and such. I believe you can bring in your used CDs, tapes, and albums and sell them to Dragon Song, I'd check on the details first before hauling a bunch of stuff over there. The proprietor of the shop was telling me that he is seeing a huge resurgence in vinyl. I used to visit the old location - this was my first time at the new location - and quite frankly - until I stumbled across the new location, I thought they had gone out of business! I have not visited Dragon Song in years and am happy to say it is still the same, great place I remember. Now that I am joining the "back to vinyl records" bandwagon, this is the first place I looked up. And glad I did! I happened to visit the day before they celebrated their 40th anniversary and am happy to report that Dragon Song's same peace-and-love philosophy is alive and well. Walking in the door is akin to entering a time machine and immediately puts a smile on your face and in your heart. This place does a soul good! Other reviewers have already talked about the good selection of vinyl records (new and used), cassette tapes, 8-track tapes (yes, I said 8-track and in the ORIGINAL packaging), CDs, concert and tie dye t-shirts, dragon goodies, black light posters, black lights and other various paraphernalia. So I will not bother to mention those in my review. :-) John Burgess is the original owner, hasn't changed a lick and still stands tall in the captain's chair behind the counter. In addition to being a really good guy, John is a walking encyclopedia of all things 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. The great thing about John is that he does not come across as a "know it all" and will gladly listen to your trip down memory lane just as much as he is willing to share his. I could stay and talk with John for hours but decided to pace myself and, instead, go back frequently. In these days of buying everything online, we really owe it to ourselves to support our local brick and mortar businesses and patronize Dragon Song. Not only will you enjoy the experience and be glad you walked through the front door, you might just gain a new friend or two. Additionally, the next generation will thank you for preserving a page from the past for them to enjoy. Dragon Song is highly recommended! Love the selection and the staff! Got a lot of records. The atmosphere was also really nice! Only downside was the tobacco smell.

The owner of this place is awesome - and the weirdness of the albums you can find is amazing! I've found several white whales for my vinyl collection. What also appreciate is the attention to detail in the rating of the quality of the vinyl. There is no listening station apparent, but just ask John and he'll hook you up. The pricing on some of the stuff is high for a "used record store" but it is what you would expect for collectors. There are new albums and sealed albums available. The one downside is that this place also sells incense...which may not be a downside for everyone but it's not my favorite thing. But I'll be back to check out their blues and jazz selections! read more

I took a chance today...I drove over to Samantha's Corner (off of Mathis Avenue, next to Synergy) to see if by chance, Dragon Song was still around. There it was, open sign glowing, drawing me in! As I approached the entrance I hoped that this newer location hadn't lost that heavy, musky aroma of mixed varieties of incense. To my excitement, it had not! One great tune after another was music to my ears. I actually caught myself singing out loud! Stopped by determined to get Pearl Jam vitalogy on vinyl, and lo and behold they had it! Good selection of classic rock and modern rock. Used records were priced decently and in good shape. Owner John is very friendly and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend visiting! read more

Great store. Lots of staples that should be in everyone's collection along with some harder-to-find treasures. My taste is extremely eclectic and my collection is large. Not many stores can offer me items that I need for my collection. However, Dragon Song was able to fill in some gaps for me! Make sure you visit! read more

Stopped by to check out the shop while in Manassas for work. Had limited time to spend there, but ended up chatting with John about the roots of rock and metal! He shared stories about seeing Sabbath, and how his first show was Alice Cooper! Great atmosphere with a wide variety of music to choose from all throughout the years. The coolest thing is that he doesn't even use a computer, some loyal customers made a business page for him! (That's pretty neat, and probably comes from the fact that he delivers excellent customer service, all while sharing his love for music with you!) Extremely knowledgeable, and shared a few tips for prolonging vinyl life/sound quality. Would recommend swinging by as soon as you get the chance! Wish we had something like this near home! This is my favorite record store. I always find something special when I shop here. I could spend hours in there (and it's not a very big store lol). The store may not be big, but there's a great selection of records, cassettes, and cd's. He also sells band shirts, incense, and other quirky, cool stuff. It's really a gem of a place. I came across this classic rock oasis purely by accident. The first thing that hit me was the scent of sandalwood incense. I hadn't smelled incense since the late 70s! This place had posters and tapestries of all the rock gods covering every square inch of wall and ceiling. It was like being transported back in time some 30 years. There were racks of vinyl records, including the new heavy-weight vinyl (180 grams). Then the owner came up front and I told him I didn't think record stores even existed anymore. He said he's been in business for 35 years in Manassas, but was at a different location before (Centerville Road). My wife actually remembered the owner and the original store from the 1980s. The owner's name is John Burgess. On his business card it says: Classic rock and roll records, tapes, CDs, fantasy gifts, and novelties. John is highly knowledgeable about the history of rock. We were discussing how today's music is manufactured using 5 songwriters, 7 producers, a drum machine, and musicians who never actually meet because they record their parts separately at different times. John knows a lot about every group from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. I threw every obscure rock group at him I could think of and he started rattling off all their songs and who opened for which group at which concert. Amazing! This took me back to my college days when you could walk into a record store and talk shop with employees who were passionate about music. I asked him how such a shop can even exist in this digital age. He said vinyl is making a huge comeback: the younger crowd is getting into classic rock and they are going for the superior sound of vinyl records. I am so glad I kept my turntable, and I am so glad I stumbled upon this enlightened sanctuary of musical delight! read more

The absolute best place ever. The records drew me there but the owner is why I stayed. The owner, Mr. John, is my best friend. I would skip school when I was still in highschool and just go talk to him and chill with him. He is amazing and clearly loves what he does. I have learned so much from Mr. John. I have been searching for a new store to get some records that has a wider variety and heard such great reviews of Dragon Song so I decided to give it a try. Driving down the area I would have never guessed there would be a hidden gem like Dragon Song off of the busy road. The atmosphere is great, as soon as you walk in there is a wonderful scent of incense and even a greeting from the owners dog. The owner is wonderful, he instantly makes you feel comfortable and is very knowledgable about music and is more than willing to recommend music that help you discover new music. The store sells a variety of things such as records, CD's, shirts, incense etc. The variety of records at the store is great a wonderful collection of the classics a great way to get started on collecting. Many classics and even a couple modern. The store has two sections for records one is for the new records and then there are the used ones. The used records are ALL listened by the owner and rated by short hands, VG= Very Good, that he will gladly explain to you. He is also constantly putting out used record so there will be different records each time you visit. The CDs are bountiful and organized and there is just so much that it's a great collection. Overall, a great atmosphere, wonderful owner, and very organized! I would recommend this store to anyone and I will be a regular from now on. read more

Who knew? I needed to find a gift for my husband with his new found passion for vinyl. I live in Fairfax and work in Manassas, so I was a bit skeptical about what Manassas had to offer. Dragon Song put my worries to rest. John, the owner has a great shop with lots to offer and if I couldn't find it, he said he could get it for me. I'm definitely putting Dragon Song on my one stop shop for all things "records". This is a classic place, with great service and two very friendly dogs to help you look like the hero. read more

Records? Perfect. Service? Phenomenal. Dogs? Wonderful. This is a creatively put together little place run by a nice man and his two dogs.

I just returned from a wonderful experience at Dragon Song, which my son and I stumbled on randomly via a Google search. My son and I arrived a half an hour before closing time, but the owner, John, stayed an extra half hour to chat and educate us about thick vinyl, thin vinyl, the variegated tie-die and rock and roll t-shirts he carries, as well as sharing memories of great shows he's seen. For a 56-year-old like me, it was a trip down memory lane. Incense burned, rock posters hung on swivel displays, and tons of records greeted my nose and eyes as I walked through the door. Particularly engaging was a photo of a sultry young Linda Ronstadt, as well as lots of new and used vinyl by Jimi, the Dead, the Beatles, and many bands I hadn't thought about in 25 years. Honest John personally cleans each one of his used records and then indicates their condition on the wrapper so the customer knows what they're getting. Oh, and also interesting was a poster of the famous pic of Janis wearing lots of jewelry and Grace wearing the Girl Scout outfit. First time I've seen the pic in color. My son and I plan to go back, perhaps tomorrow. read more
