It was so nice to go to a reception on a Saturday afternoon instead of a week night. The setup of the place is such that the food and drinks are floor level, but no food/drinks are allowed in the gallery space. Not convenient but understandable. This was my 2nd or 3rd time in this space. There was cheese/meat/fruit in one area, sealed pieces of cake in another area, and bartenders pouring wine, beer, soda, and water. Also a special drink dedicated to Alma Thomas. I was not familiar with her work, she was big admirer of outer space. It coincided with the Artemis II lunar space trip, so that was just awesome! The other exhibit about the University of Chicago's history with Chinese art was visually arresting and thought-provoking. There was a space separate for kids to do crafts as well. the bathrooms were small but clean, and a coat rack was provided, which was quite convenient. It is not far from public transportation, and I can't speak to parking, but the campus is so nice, if you live a mile or so away, it's a nice walk.

Family Day at the Smart Museum…read more When my daughter booked our family for Family Day as what we thought was part of U Chicago's Family Day, we were quite excited. A fun crafting adventure for the weekend. We almost didn't go as we were running late. Called and they said to come, so we did. Lucky to find a parking spot next to the Smart Museum on the University of Chicago campus. Walked in to the open atrium where we saw families of preschool aged kids with their mommies and daddies weaving on paper looms. My daughters have progressed to grad school, so we were a bit surprised. The museum curator also said when she scheduled Family Day at the Smart Museum of Art, she didn't realize that was also UChicago's Family Day. What a coincidence! So....we explored the museum first for inspiration. The museum is small, but had some beautiful installations. My favorite was the sunflower quilt print. The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles. Rosa Parks. Sojourner Truth. Ida Wells. Mary McLeod Bethune. Harriet Tubman. Vincent Van Gogh watching strong women advocate for equality from a distance. So powerful. Then, back to the atrium to pick up paper looms and fill brown paper bags with and assortment of strands of yarn, cord, shells and cards. Not having a plan, we went to work. Creativity inspired by our love for each other. Nice to have their featured artist come check on us. No, we were not on our phones. We were weaving small works of art. Whilst running some errands in Brainerd I decided to take a look and see what else I might want to…read morevisit in the area. I found BDG in the course of doing a bit of online sleuthing for what to do in Beverly, but actually hadn't planned to visit because I knew my time was limited. However, it happened to be near another shop I'd decided to visit, which was very serendipitous since Beverly Dry Goods is a great shop and I'm glad I didn't miss out! The proprietor was really friendly. Most of the time I was in the store (December 22, 2021) I was the only one there, but there was a few minutes when there was one to three others in the store. I also got lucky (for my comfort level, at least) that there were so few folks in, because the woman running the shop mentioned that she might be able to grab a quick bite to eat that day because it had been so busy for the last few days. It's a pretty small store, but they are packed full of stuff. Although it's not solely dry goods, there's a lot of variety in what they sell. You'll find textiles (they had some nice hats and stuff when I was there), barware (mixers, drink accessories, etc.), candles and incense, cards, and so on. I bought some fun glitter for drinks, which I used on New Year's Eve for wine to ring in the new year, but you could easily use it in water/juice/pop or whatever for kids or folks who don't drink alcohol. I also bought an item that I can only describe as incense matches; they're discreet, don't burn long, and don't have a smell that's overpowering or lingers overly much. I find that they're perfect for just about any room in the house; I don't tend to like incense because it's far too strong and the scent hangs around forever, but not with this product. They also recently shared that they have some nonalcoholic mixers coming in, and they occasionally do events--if the timing of it worked for me, I may have gotten a ticket to the Galentine's Day Cocktail Class they're offering this coming week! When I was in, they had a their windows decorated as part of a contest that some of the businesses in Beverly were taking part in. Their decoration was in the style of a Chicago flag, which I loved (and took a couple photos with, which apparently was their objective because after I did I saw that they had a note encouraging people to do so!). Beverly Dry Goods seems like one of those shops that, although they may carry some items pretty regularly due to their popularity, is always on the lookout for new things, seasonal merchandise, and so on so I'm going to keep them in my sights (and follow them on instagram @beverlydrygoods). I'm sure I could find a fun gift for someone here if I needed one, and it's always great to have a place where you can get unique gifts in your back pocket. They're located on South Walden Parkway, which is a short street that I'm pretty sure isn't on the Chicago grid--so north siders, you might miss it the first time! It's also on the Metra Rock Island line, so if you are on that and get off at the 99th street stop you're right next to it--the shop's south wall borders the small parking lot for the Metra station. Street parking in front is limited, but if I recall correctly is also free, and there's additional parking available on the surrounding streets.

This place seemed like the largest of the businesses in Church 103--once a Lutheran church, now a variety of local businesses. The name is a nod to place--Haven for the sanctuary, and 1890 for the incorporation of Beverly Hills (Beverly's formal name). Their space is gorgeous, with the centerpiece being the glass window on the south wall. They have some lovely things here, and a great variety. I came in near St. Patrick's Day and since it's on the Southside you'd think a Leprechaun threw up in here! Lots of fun seasonal items, but also everyday art, Chicago-themed gear, stationery items, baby toys/clothes/things, household items, and a lot more. Service was friendly. However if the piece requires more specific requirements, custom is the best option. Many color samples and designson the wall. Clear covers for specialty prints and photographs are available with varying properties, i.e.reduced glare. My frames were ready for pickup as promised on tine ready for pick up. I had one of the most upsetting and humiliating customer service experiences of my life at the…read moreMichaels store located at 9140 S Western Ave, Evergreen Park, IL 60805. On December 22, 2025, I was in this store from approximately 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Management should be able to clearly identify all employees and the manager on duty during that time. I ordered a 24-inch helium-filled balloon for my child's birthday. Because this size was unavailable at my local store, I was instructed to place an order at this location, which required a 1.5-hour drive. When the employee brought out my order, the balloon did not float at all, clearly showing it was not properly filled with helium. Instead of taking responsibility, the employee repeatedly asked me where the balloon came from, even though I had ordered it online for pickup and did not personally select or prepare the balloon. It was baffling and completely inappropriate, and felt like a blatant attempt to avoid responsibility. I politely explained the issue. Instead of attempting to resolve it, the employee wandered around the store without urgency or accountability. Their overall attitude was extremely rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. I had initially left my young children waiting in the car, assuming this would be a quick correction. However, more than 30 minutes passed with no progress. When I had to bring my children inside due to the long delay, they became upset and started crying and throwing tantrums. Because of this delay, my other scheduled pickups -- including cake and other party supplies -- were also late, leaving me with a completely chaotic and stressful birthday party preparation. When I requested a refund, the process was again unreasonably delayed. Multiple employees were present, yet none took responsibility, and their behavior remained unprofessional and arrogant. I then asked to speak with a manager. The manager told me that the balloon "would not float because it was large," which is factually incorrect -- I have ordered 24-inch helium balloons many times from other retailers without issue. When I tried to explain this, I was spoken to condescendingly, interrupted repeatedly, and treated with overt hostility. At one point, the manager stated that if I was not "nice," a refund would not be issued. This felt like a clear abuse of authority and intimidation. Throughout the entire interaction, staff members spoke sharply, dismissed me, and mocked me among themselves in an extremely unprofessional manner. As I finally left after receiving the refund -- nearly one hour inside the store, on top of my long drive -- employees were laughing and smirking at me in front of my children, which was deeply humiliating. As an Asian customer whose first language is not English, being ignored, ridiculed, and treated with contempt by multiple staff members felt degrading, discriminatory, and completely unacceptable, especially in front of my children. This was not a single employee failing -- it reflected a store-wide failure in professionalism, accountability, and basic human decency during the time I was present on December 22, 2025, from 3:30-5:30 PM. I sincerely hope Michaels reviews this incident thoroughly, including staff behavior and management conduct, so that no other family experiences this kind of humiliating treatment.
