this stores selection is good but a bit hard to find things, the main issue with this store is that the lady cutting my fabric gave me like 10 cm less then I needed, that might not seem like a lot but I needed 20cm by 20cm squares for a blanket so imagine my surprise when I get to the last row and its 20cm by 10 cm, there were also many notches cut into the fabric. She saw she didn't give me enough and didn't do anything and she RUINED MY BLANCET. would NOT recommend read more

so sad that there's no michaels downtown anymore, thankfully dressew is still around. i was looking for tulle, and they had it by the bolt and in many colours starting from $2.99/metre and up. browsing through their bins, i found a really cute pattern that would make a nice mask, here's to hoping my sister can whip me one or two out of this cloth. i also found some artificial flowers that would make a nice gift box. i came to dressew approximately 20 minutes to closing and was not rushed, and managed to get what i wanted and then some. great place downtown for all your sewing, costumes, and crafting projects. glad to see that they accept credit cards. read more

This place is fun to browse if you're looking for Halloween costumes/mask. Store policy and hours are just terrible. I made on time today right near the closing time to buy a zipper slider. I asked staff to confirm it's the right item I need, and $2 for a zipper slider is DAMN expensive for a small thing. Know the measurement, size or material before the purchase since NO refunds/exchange are allowed. Otherwise Dressew is generally okay. I actually purchased a buckle to get someone's coat fixed before. Ideal place to buy fabrics, leathers and etc to make clothes. Interior is outdated. read more

Ordered online many times during the Pandemic since they were closed. Got my elastics there for a good price. The fabrics are nice and some are very reasonably priced. I like their sale merchandise but they don't have a lot on sale. They don't give you even a cm more than a meter which is quite chintzy. read more

Dressew - how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... 1-BEST selections of fabrics in Canada, hands down. No, really, I'm not exaggerating. They ALWAYS have so many options I end up buying dozens of yards/metres (that's why I order online so it's shipped to the door of my studio-I couldn't possibly hope to lug that to my car). 2-PRICES. Best prices in Canada-maybe best prices worldwide and again not exaggerating. Supplex $3/m. Nylon spandex prob about 300 gsm so really nice weight, $4/m. Beautiful lawn cotton $2/m. Just bought 38 pieces of nylon spandex in various weights and colours of 10 m each and top price I paid was $7/m. You just can't find that quality of active wear fabric anywhere for that kind of money. 3-Findings/notions not available anywhere else. Looking for a 38 in. lime green coil zipper with pink polka dots? Yup they have those. Looking for a replacement for your 1978 Dead Kennedy band patch? Oh look they have all three! If it's been produced and is related in any way to sewing or fabric craft it seems to show up at Dressew sooner or later. You just need to scroll/walk through on the regular (but allow yourself a minimum of 4 hours to do so). 4-Customer service. Okay, so it's not the same service you get at the expensive fabric shop but so what and who cares? They are waaaayyy too busy and their prices are waaayyy too low to have staff dedicating huge amounts of time to discuss your pet project or to teach you how to sew. If you want to know fabric content ask and they either know or it's unknown by anyone. Want to convert from m to y or reverse? They can do it in seconds. Want to know how to install the zipper you just asked them to guess the correct size of to buy for your winter jacket? Seriously? Go somewhere else and waste someone else's time or go take a course. They are run off their feet most days just getting orders cut and on their way and nowhere does it say they teach sewing. They are a retail fabric, costume, notions seller. Do you ask the cashier at the grocery store how to make quiche? No, you don't. So, don't ask the clerks at Dressew how to sew. Recognize the amazing deal you're getting and move along. 5-Hours/policies/tender - sure. These can be a bit annoying when, at midnight I want to go shopping and pay with a foreign credit card. So do it online instead. When I order on Monday the fabric usually shows up within days even if it is literally 3 or 400 meters of 40 different fabrics plus notions etc. it's delivered to my door (literally) no muss no fuss. If they're short bc someone else bought what I ordered I get an email asking how I want to deal - take it in 2 pieces with a free extra metre or choose something else. I swear they must work 24 hours a day to get my orders out so quickly. As to anything else people seem to want to whine about here - seriously give your head a shake. You're getting $30/m fabric for a crazy large discount, a selection second to none and anyone can rearrange their schedule to fit their trip to Dressew's hours (or shop online). I've been shopping at Dressew since the mid 70s starting with my first trip when grandma took me there as a 5 yr old. Even then I knew what an amazing place it was and my opinion hasn't changed. I find the staff exactly as expected for such a busy shop and have never felt (or been) spoken to or treated with anything but kindness and courtesy but then I treat them respectfully and reasonably so maybe that's why. Final comment - I am so sad they have announced their moving/closing. Things are up in the air at this point but I'm still years from giving up on designing and sewing and I just cannot imagine my world without Dressew. To the staff and owners of Dressew - THANK YOU! I cannot express how important you've been to me for more than 50 years (and hope you continue to be for many more). I hope I never have to do without you and your amazing store. read more

I went to Dressew a few weeks back, to checked out the Halloween section (to which i found some things over priced.) Large selection of pretty much anything you could want or desire ....from make it yourself, to ready to wear, and all the accessory's you may need. I found some great fishnets, and some funky tights (sadly only snatched up one pair..) I found some perfect back drop material (super shiny ) at 5.99/meter . I asked a lady what the size would be as i had measured using a tape and did not write it down but knew it was twice the width of the tape and one and a half long or so ...she seemed to know what i meant and cut the material and away i went pleased with my purchases. Sooooooo i go back a week later and i discover the tights i loved were all gone but there was a large selection of colors in the metallic backdrop material (Yeah!!) I grabbed one bolt and asked a lady if she was free and when i explained what size i needed i was given THE MOST EVIL GLARE i have ever experienced!! I was so stunned i felt like she saw every sin i could ever commit and was judging me - this is nothing i have EVER experienced before !! I found myself hardly able to even talk....anyway she was rude and condescending. I normally would of never put up with this but i was in a hurry and needed the material. The store was packed and i was not about to search out management at that moment. I just got the other colors of fabric for her to cut and took off to the other side of the store to avoid standing there feeling uncomfortable while she cut . I returned and she was still cutting. I then received a call on my cell phone and before i could even say "can i call you back" she marched up to me and rudely said "You know this is CASH ONLY !! " To which i nodded, and hung up ..... I gathered all my fabric and told her "Thank you SO MUCH for ALL your help !" with a huge smile . I went up to the cash area where they were obviously stressed due to the busy season. They were however friendly and polite . My total came to over $120.00. However- i did not appreciate the *bonus* attitude. I wish i would of worn my glasses so i could see her name tag, but i will return, and make a positive ID. This shop was exactly what I expected after reading the many reviews. 2 floors of wall to wall stuff for the creative side of you. The place reminds me of Army and Navy. This place is an institution. I have personally been shopping here for at least 45 years and they are way older than that. One of the things that Iove about this place is that I recognize a lot of the staff. This is not a place for whiners. The staff here know what they are doing. Fabric content, where everything is, and real advise when they are chatting with you during cutting. There is a big difference here. When you shop at Dressew you are in great company. Artists, seamstresses, designers and truly gifted costume makers grabbing their last minute notions that only Dressew will have. Every once in a while I do the circut and hit all of the fabric stores. Nope. No one has the depth of stock . I obviously love this place and hope I will get to shop there a lot longer. read more

My day started with calling over and over and no one answered the phone. And my question was simple, if I can bring my puppy into the store. So I left her at home. I come in to the store and right behind me is a lady who has a dog and she is not let in. This answers my question. Which to me is totally baffling since there is no food being served and it's not a grocery store. On top of this, the lady had proof of her puppy in a pouch being a service dog. She was not aloud to go in. From my understanding it is I-legal to deny entry when it's a service dog. So for those wondering if you can bring your dog, you can't. The worst MANAGMENT EVER!!!! There should be a proper CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING.. Been going to the store for ages. Went in yesterday to purchase 3 items, one of the things was a cloak. a really long one I saw on line. so I found all the items except the cloak. I thought maybe I can make one out of all the fabrics they have. .so I though to get velvet black fabric to try and make one even though I don't sow. as I got the fabric cut and this was 2meters. I walked over to the register and checked again the area with the cloaks were and finally see the one I wanted so I grab it to pay for it and put the fabric down since I don't need it now. as I turn around a shorter Male grabs my elbow and says "what do you think your doing? you have to pay for that!" I explained to him unfortunately I do not want the fabric as I found what I actually came in for. then another taller male "manager" who wouldn't even tell me his name. said "if you do not get the fabric you are not buying anything and started grabbing the items out of my hands. I said but I'm going to buy the 3 items I need....at this point I said fine threw everything then on the shelf and left the store. as I am walking out the "manager comes out to take pictures of me while I was talking to a friend and proceeded to tell me I'm banned from the store. As mad as I was I leave and call my hubs who said how can let them treat you like that and who has the right to put his hands on you? you went in to spend money. So I go back to try and reason with the "manager" and approach an elderly security guard and politely asked him if he could call the manager or owner. the owner or "manager" didn't want to come out instead another younger very reasonable security guard came out to speak to me. I explained what happened and that I was trying to purchase 3 items but didn't need the fabric (like 2 meters of fabric you can make probably 3 pairs of pants) as they couldn't resell it. so the security guard goes back in to reason with the "manager" they both come out and the "manager" says to me you can only come back if you buy the fabric. We cut the fabric so you have to pay for it" There is no sign in the store, not even the ladies that cut the fabric warn you....if I cut it you bought it" So calming my self I said fine, I will swallow my pride and pay for the fabric and the 3 items. As I come to the register I get all things and he brings the fabric BUT takes away all 3 items and says you are only allowed to buy the fabric. REALLY ARE 5 YEARS OLD? what kind of management is that???? SAD SAD. anyway I leave and called the police to report the employee putting his hands on me. the police unfortunately couldn't do much since I left but suggested I leave reviews everywhere possible.... today my mom and I went back to dressew to buy some items as my mom sews. again we come to register with the shopping cart and the "manager" come right in front of both of us and takes our items away and says you 2 cant buy anything in this store. LOL my mom who has been a customer for 20+ years and my self who went there every year for Halloween things and spend $1000s of dollars there are banned now?? JUST WOW. my mom is a 65 year old woman and tried reasoning with this so called human "manager" and he was not having it. he caused a scene claiming we are criminals. criminals who want to spend $$ in the store. just wow! so since he took pictures of me yesterday I only thought that its smart and fair to take pics of him...well he didn't like that too much. My mother even talked to him and said since this is a private family owned business and let's say you went in with your dad or mom into the store and got treated like criminals. How would you feel? he turned around and walked away. all this aside if you go downstairs there is an area for all scrap materials that some didn't buy or extra whatever. so obviously they can resell the 2 meters fabric. TO GET THIS KIND OF TREATMENT AND HARASSMENT IS JUST SO DISCUSTING. I have also read the reviews and seen that this thing of banning people from this store is very popular for them. My friend and I needed a hat for a theme party and when Dollar Store fails you, you can find it at Dressew. Although, items are not $1 or $2, the price is not too bad. You'll be able to find tons of fabric styles and textures here as well as costumes. I remember coming here last year to put the finishing touches on my outfit. Just remember to bring cash or debit. They don't take credit cards. Note: If you need to call the store to ask them questions, they only answer between 9:00AM-10:00AM. If you can't find at least one material that you can make something with, then I don't know what to say. Get in there, look through every bolt, and be creative! Don't forget the downstairs with all the notions - buttons, lace, zippers, etc. This is really a quilters paradise and if you celebrate Halloween like the 4th of July, then Dressew gets stocked with masks, materials, wigs, and other paraphernalia that your heart could desire for a party. I like going in there for sweater/tshirt/blouse material and it's like a pit of awesomeness -- as in, can I escape without spending less than $60-$80....nooooope!:) read more

Dresses is great for costume supplies and ideas. Just read the review from the person complaining about the policy about purchasing material that has been cut for them.. Wow just wow... as far as I am aware that is the policy in most fabric stores. It makes sense, the material may not be the proper size for someone else to use and it's basically ruined or they have to sell it as a reminent at a reduced cost. I like coming to this store for their huge selection of fabrics. The price is good and I usually find what I need . The younger staff are more helpful and nice . There is one particular staff member who's quite rude. She's an older Caucasian woman, heavy set with short grey hair. You will usually see her sitting in a chair . DON'T bother to ask her for help. One time I went to her to get some fabric cut , I asked her some questions on the fabric length and how much I would need. Her reply ? ' I Don't know I'm not making it !' A second time I went I TOTALLY avoided her. But I was standing next to her chair and in her way I suppose because she said ' I need to get back to my chair ' and she shoved herself in . No, "excuse me , can I get by ?" RUDE! She should just retire ! There were other employees Around who were talking amongst themselves but none talked with this older one . Non-sequitor and bi-polar, this well organized fabric and novelty store sells everything from plastic doll heads to foot for foot patterns of jungle themed flannel. With two vast floors of odds and ends, the focus is on things that old ladies could use to build baby blankets, and the one-stop shop for professional set designers and costume designers. Offering the best prices on 7 long shelves of Halloween paraphenelia 52 weeks a year, they seem to focus a lot of attention on masks, with everything from retro ninja turtles to those erotic eye masks they wore in the movie Eyes Wide Shut. Another bizarre addition is the irregular supply of gourmet chocolate they sell that's cheaper than Costco. It comes and goes, usually because people stock up for the dry periods. The nice old ladies are always busy at work, stocking the new fairy wings, coils of ribbon, pirate eye patches and pillars of cloth. I come to this fabric store because it's just convenient. Fabricana is far superior in service and is a bit of a drive so I'll usually go there when I have time. With Dressew there's a wide selection of stuff and clearance items but service is very poor. I witnessed the associate projecting a lot of attitude towards a customer who was purchasing some as-is fabric. Customer was pointing out some scruff. She may be unaware that those marks are why the price is like that. There are polite ways to let the customer know. I went to pay for my item and it was $2 a meter and I got two meters. The older cashier woman rung it up as $8 and I'm like. Isn't it $2 a meter? And she said "I don't know." As if I'm accusing her of being an idiot. Come in. It was on the paper with the price. So she looks at the paper and doesn't say anything. Cancels the transaction. Takes the next customer! And finally finished my transaction. Atleast tell me if the machine needs time to restart or some shit like that. Instead of just not saying anything. She didn't apologize for her price mistake or say anything else for that matter. Amazing store! The selection is incredible - SO many fabrics and patterns, as well as buttons, zippers, and everything else needed. The store is organized really well, making it easy to find the fabric types, colours, designs you're looking for. The staff is awesome -they are friendly and helpful. They've helped me decide on fabrics for various projects, and assisted with advice and tips. The only potential downside is that there are so many fantastic options, you may spend longer in the store than you anticipated, and leave with more fabric than you had planned on buying! read more

Lots of goodies here but customer service needs a focus. I dropped a few hundred on fabric and asked a few Qs along the way. "Hey do u know how best to finish this fabric so it doesn't fray? "no idea" a few other simple Qs were met with the same response. it was almost like she was annoyed i was buying so much. she mentioned the fabric was heavy so i even moved it all. then downstairs, lovely lady at the till but the $50 scissors didnt come with a sheath like they were supposed to ( i have kids and prefer the safety mechanism). they couldn't switch it up with another pair to modify without having to ask a manager so i have to wait til they get a new order in. just seems odd like they are caught up in some other world where sales might not be that important. read more

Excuse me while I clean up the shattered pieces of my mind... HOLY COW! I've never seen a store like this before! This is a game-changer! I could spend the whole day sifting through the vastness of this place and still feel overwhelmed. Just as a response to some previous reviews, I found the staff to be gratuitously friendly. Maybe a bit rushed, but I can appreciate their efficiency; I barely waited in line for cutting or check-out. Also, I scored some sweet deals, and that's what it's all about (amiright?). One of the sales clerks was explaining that the store owner buys out manufacturer's/clothing makers' fabrics and notions, so it's really high quality and a totally eclectic blend of what you might find. The store is kind-of like going through your grandmother's attic where there is some semblance of organization, but it probably only makes sense to Grandma. I'm really struggling to put words to this place - you just have to go. As most of us found ourselves, I was desperate for elastic when sewing scrub caps for hospitals during the pandemic. I made a desperate plea to Dressew via Twitter, and they answered my plea! I was so happy, when I went down to pick up the elastic, I learned they were accommodating other sewers who were making masks, caps and gowns for local hospitals. I have never in my life been treated with the level of utter contempt that the older female staff have shown to me in my last 3 visits. I love the selection and low prices of Dressew, but the sheer rudeness of certain staff members when asked simple and polite questions such as "excuse me, do you know if you have this style of military button? If so, could you help me find it?" In this instance, the woman spat back at me "Um, no. How would I know? We have a lot of buttons. Go look over there." I was so taken aback that my jaw dropped. On my previous visit I made the mistake of entering with a latte in hand. Noticing the "No drinks" sign, I was about to ask the woman at the counter where I could set my fresh, 6 dollar coffee when she raised her voice and dressed me down loudly. In front of other patrons. When I asked my original question of "where then can I place my coffee while I shop?" she told me I had to throw it out or leave. Rudely. Shockingly rudely. Other patrons actually chuckled and shook their head in disbelief at her attitude. I could detail other instances, and I have spoken to no less than half a dozen other customers who have experience this same type of treatment. I am SOOOOOO DONE with Dressew. Upper management, I hope you are reading this. All of the younger employees I have encountered are sweet and helpful, but some of the long term employees have a SERIOUS chip on their shoulders. It's outrageous. This needs to stop. You're allowing your good name to be dragged through the mud by this strangely bitter, perplexing and frankly, upsetting service. I love: - The large selection of fabrics and various supplies (some stuff is way overpriced though) I hate: - The service...if you can call it that. The rude and/or indifferent attitudes of staff really has put me off shopping here. Some of them seem to hate interactions with customers; I understand retail can be really tough but if I'm polite and respectful to you why can't you return the sentiment? - Got a question? Not sure where something is? You're probably sh*t out of luck (see rude/indifferent staff) or I've often been told "Try Michaels" to my question. - They only answer the phone between 9-10am according to their site, however I've never been able to reach a human when i've called, even during that time. Again this ties into service or lack thereof. - Their opening hours, they close at 5pm when most of us are only getting out of work. I either have to make a mad dash across the city on my lunch hour or wait until Saturday. To the Manager/Owners: Staff need an overhaul in attitude. The idea of what you're doing is great but when your staff deal with customers in such a disinterested way, that they barely look up/make eye contact when you ask them a question; or the other extreme of plain rudeness/being barked at? I like going to this store because of the huge selection of fabric and craft supplies. I am not a fan of the customer service tho. I find that should you ask them a question, it is like almost asking for death sometimes! I don't think the management treat the staff very well. They seem miserable and blue most of the time. There is an older lady who works downstairs and she treats the other staff like they are dogs! I just love this place! So much to see . My bff and I come regularly and spend ages . The selection of fabrics is amazing . I find the staff I've dealt with are really cool and enjoy a laugh or two. Always helpful and pleasant. They've got the most realistic fake rats I've ever seen , lol. Bought some and freak people out all the time with them . Haha!! Oh Dressew, you may be cheap, but you're full of so much good stuff that i'm still gonna spend 50 bucks anyway! While i do love sewing, i'm not fabulous at it, so the discount section in the basement is my best friend! I can always find great fabric, but it isn't so expensive that i'm going to pull out my hair stressing over messing up whatever it is i'm trying to put together! I love how they have a year 'round Halloween department. When you're as cool as my friends and i- did i say cool? I meant to say freaky!- you never know when you'll need a wig, fake blood or Elvis shades! Honestly, this place has EVERYTHING. If anyone has ever gone in here looking for something sewing or craft related and not found it, i really want to know what the hell they were looking for. Seriously. As many people have mentioned, beware of the older ladies who work here. I'm not sure what happened to suck the happiness out their lives. Has the Grinch stolen Christmas from them every year in a row? Do they actually HATE sewing?! Are we all nincompoops and they are the only people discerning enough to realize it? I'm not too sure, just heed the warnings and if you have to ask anyone a question, seek out a younger member of staff. I'm glad they've FINALLY started taking debit! No more running across the street to sketchy convenience stores to get money out before setting foot in the store! Phew! read more
