I've been using this movie theater since 2014 and I can say that it is worth it just because it is free. The only issue that I have , even with the sound system, is if you attend a popular movie you're going to spend most of it listening to the sound of people eating food. That isn't the fault of the theater, but it's just something you will have to understand when you attend. The workers are nice, the restrooms are clean, but it is extremely hard to focus when people are loud Non-Stop. read more

NASNI- Naval Air Station North Island. Lowry Base theater. Military ID is required to go on base. FREE showings, most of the times the movies are still showing at the theaters out in town. Large popcorn & drink for only $5.50. Good deals here. Seats are old style. Place can get a little hot. But you can't beat FREE. :) Super nice & friendly staff. Manny the manager is a cool dude. If you know a Military service member down in the San Diego area, you must try and get them to take you on base, more specifically to the Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) in Coronado, CA. This is because you can watch FREE new release movies (yes, government sponsored) at the 1600 seat, near IMAX sized, Klipsch audio surround sound "Lowry Theater", which occupies a former quanza hut. This is so cool, words cannot even describe, let me tell you. So lucky me has seen many-a-movie at the Lowry Theater, where even the buttered popcorn is fantastic. Audio visual is superb, making me think that High Def is standard protocol for the Military and anything less just isn't sat. Yes, you may begrudgingly offer up that these are "our tax dollars at work", but let me tell you that THAT is a good thing here. Providing a cool theater is a small price to pay for these Military service members doing what they do, so let's just call it that. Overall, if the opportunity presents itself, take every chance you can get to take a seat at the Lowry Theater. Oh, and remember to mind your P's and Q's. In lieu of annoying previews, the Lowry substitutes a showstopping AV presentation of "The National Anthem", and movie theater viewers ALL STAND AND RISE. My family loves coming here if we see that they're showing a movie we haven't watched yet plus it's free.....so why not! Duh The food is ok, just like any theater that sells hot dogs and nachos = not all that great. Great that there's free movies, but showing up in shorts and getting bug bites on the exposed skin isn't worth it. On both legs, I now have a bunch of bites. I felt things all evening, but I thought it was a draft from the huge fans. Turns out I was wrong. Everyone in my group came away with bites near the ankles. This theater, while not the dirtiest place, needs to do a better job with the bugs. The back of the chairs have buttery streaks on them and some of the chair padding has flattened out over years of use. At least the audio is decent. read more

This is great theater. The refreshments are incredibly inexpensive, and there is an ample amount of seating. It is wise to come early to get the best selection of seats. This theater does not have the high seat backs, but the seats are comfortable enough. I also like that they play the National Anthem before each movie. The last few times I have come here, I have seen people bringing infants and small children to PG-13 and R rated movies. Be courteous to your fellow movie-goers, hire a sitter, and maybe even stop procreating so you can live selfishly. I cant think of anyone who enjoys the ambiance of a crying infant or child. read more

Anyone can practically walk in and catch a quick movie; all retirees, active duty, reservists, DOD civilians, contractors and sponsored guests, and dependents. 3D movies are available. You must go to the snacks counter and purchase reusable 3D glasses for $1.00; can't beat it! Once you walk into the theater, you WILL be blown away. Came tonight to see Bad moms and it was a really fun time! My only concerns with this theater is the lack of security. People were rolling in with book bags that looked to be so packed it could hardly zip, and kids that SHOULD Not have been watching that movie! I realize it is a military base but there should be someone with base security there to make sure it remains a safe environment. Also the seats were broken in the last row. read more

This movie theatre is our favorite! How can you go wrong with free, brand new movies all within a gorgeous, historic and huge and fantastic sound stage hanger! the workers here are stupid. they're not flexible at all and have a very close minded attitude. The asian guy who was working here was being so stuborn and rude to customers who just wanted a return for the 3D glasses but he insisted that I need my reciept which I didnt receive at all and made me wait for 20+ minutes while everyone else got their refunds. Always love coming here. This is a fabulous old movie theater on the base and it is fun just to be in the area. I really like he set up of the theater so that even if there is someone in front of you, you are not blocked from seeing the movie! Would agree the price is right for Lowry Theater, movies are free. Recently installed a super huge ceiling fan to help resolve the lack of air conditioning during the summer months. Medium slushy is now a whopping four dollars. Used to be the same price as the sodas. Ice cream drumsticks are filled with freezer ice. Have pizza, but selection can be limited. You can't beat free movies! Get yourself a friend who can sponsor you onto the base. You might want to get into the first block of seats. The seating area is massive, and I can see where sitting in the back would not be as fun. They have 3D movies too. Acoustics are good, especially for this large of a space. When you can see a free movie and the 3-d glasses are just a buck than automatic first rate

I love this theater not for the free admission, but the fact that I can just walk straight in and out in a few steps makes it so convenient when going about base. It's so roomy and the audio system has been consistent everywhere I've chosen to sit. Doesn't get too hot or cold as I've found other theaters to be, and there's always plenty of room to get a good view. While there are few films playing at a time, they switch it up often enough to keep me coming. I've seen The Water Diviner, Spy, and Aloha twice so far, and look forward to going again sometime soon. read more

I have to admit this theatre is the trump of all base theaters, and I have been to many over my twenty years!!! I treat (giggles) to all my visitors who are not in the military here while they visit and they love it!! Pack a picnic basket eat on the beach then come over to the theatre!! read more

This movie theater smells like old mildew and it doesn't look like it's been cleaned in 10-15 years. The only thing you can smell are the bathrooms mixed with mildew and popcorn. If it wasn't for the movies being free I don't think anyone would go here. They should shut it down do a renovation and charge the same $3 everyother base theater charges, at least the seating would be clean at that point. read more

The Lowry Theater is a wonderful experience as is the Naval Base, San Diego theater. It is a real pleasure to be among an audience that has such respect for others while enjoying the movie. This old timer, retired USN, also appreciates starting the experience with the National Anthem. Our 8 year old grand daughter is very quick to her feet with hand over her heart while singing the anthem. We love it. She also, without encouragement, salutes going thru the front gate. This theater is better than 32nd street. No elevated seating though. It seems like the air stations get all the better perks.
