My Step-son took his in class sessions, but did not get called to schedule his in car sessions. When I called (and they actually answered) we were told it will be "a couple more weeks". This happened a few times. Fast forward 4 1/2 months he was still not scheduled for in car sessions. Finally got a call back after showing up in person and leaving a bad review on another site. Told the owner Craig that we were fed up and wanted money back. No refund was offered. Some of these kids pay for this class with their own money. It's just not right. Avoid this place at all costs. Wait a little longer for the other school to have openings. It will still be a shorter wait than this driving school. read more

Paid for 2 hours of training in October was told it would be a month prior to receiving the lesson .We did not get the lessons till March they did call me inform me there would be a delay I had to call them several times and it would be days before I received a return call.I even asked for a refund but they would not do that.I would have scheduled more time with them but I was through with dealing with the company. read more

I signed my daughter up last year to attend the 30 hour class. Unfortunately she was only able to attend one class and cannot attend any future classes. I called right after the first class to discuss a refund but never heard back. I just tried again, understanding it is has been a while, but the woman on the phone had no interest in trying to understand my situation. If she had been polite and understanding and explained why there was no possibility of a refund I would have been fine. However I found her extremely rude and lacking in understanding. This place is super low rent. The building is old and nasty with a terribly musty odor. The "classroom" setup is little more than thrift store chairs and tables. The "self-guided" lesson plan is not what I would ever consider driver training. I took my teen daughter for a class and immediately decided I could not leave her there. I have my permit, and I am in my 40s. Craig Smith is my instructor and the owner. I wish I had this driving school in Johnson City, TN. He makes my mind at ease even when I get very nervous driving. He is top-notch. I drove with him for 2 hours today (Oct. 6, 2023). All I can say is I wish I had reached out sooner. It is money well spent. So thank you, Drive-Rite and to Craig Smith. I am not doing the 30-hour classroom instruction. I do not understand the reviews at all. If my driver's ed wasn't a joke in high school, I would have been able to get my driver's license years ago. Unfortunately, the schools in Tennessee only allow the best student drivers to drive mostly. Trust me, Johnson City, TN does not need another car wash. What we absolutely need is a driving school that will make the drivers the safest drivers that anyone can be. Craig Smith really tries to make me the safest driver that I can be! So, thank you! He is a great instructor! He will put your mind at ease no matter your age or inexperience. Highly recommend. I am looking forward to my next driving lesson. Description of Complaint: Drive-Rite Driving School lists itself as a school, and as a class. Their website currently states that they are "a full service driving school, with all types of instruction." This "school" does not offer any instructor led classroom teaching at all. I enrolled my son in driver's ed at Drive-Rite Driving School, and was told there was 30 hours of classroom time, and 6 hours of drive time. It was never mentioned that all of the 30 hours of class time were spent with the student searching through a study guide alone, not in instruction, and I was recently told there are also 5 or 6 videos they watch. I had enrolled my son, and called to inquire on what days and times were available for instructor led class time, and was told that there were none, that they do not teach in class that way. They shared that students just go through a book, find the answers, and handwrite the question verbatim, and the exact answer from the book. This, along with the videos are what the 30 hours consists of entirely. It's basically a study hall. A student could do this at home on their own. I was told this was a class, and to have no teacher teaching at all, is not okay. We attended the orientation (this was not said), and my son came one other day. He told me there is no teacher teaching, and I called in so we could be sure to come on the days for teaching, not during the study hall hours, where they hunt and find answers and copy them down alone. It doesn't exist. I let them know this was misleading, and that I would like a refund for the unused hours. The total cost was $389. I asked for a call back, and was told that she did not know if anyone would call me back, but told me I could come in. I did come in and talked with an instructor that agreed with me that there needed to be changes to the program, but Craig would need to make the decision on the refund. I was told he would call me (in earlier Dec.). I have called back and left messages, with no replies at all. Negative 5 stars and when asked what the students were going to learn that day i was told that they have chapters to do. There are students with there drivers license already and still have no clue on how long before they are done with the course. Every question has to be completely hand written and the answers EXACTLY out of the book. These kids need to be interested to learn anything and taught about the real world events. Not what we thought we were signing up for! We were attracted by the statement that they would pick them up at the house for the driving lessons and wanted the insurance discount this class would provide. What we didn't realize was that before you got to the driving lessons there are about 80 hours of mind numbing paperwork. The students all pretty much have to completely recopy the books by hand and then take tests on the material and there is a lot! I can't say that they are not thorough though! read more

The teacher of this course, Craig Smith, was rude to me from the moment I walked in the room with his snide comment "No this is a tuber-ware party, sit down" after I simply asked "Is this the drivers ed 4 hour class?" Then throughout the class proceeded to call out my name from things like writing too many notes and retracing my notes (which for anyone who has trouble sitting still like I do is a way of channeling that urge to move around) He had me show him my notes (maybe to try to prove that I wasn't taking notes) then when he saw that I was indeed taking notes he simply went on to tell me how many times I retraced something I circled etc. Anyways, he's a rude inconsiderate person. -526272/10 rating on personality read more

Avoid this group at all costs. I signed up for a class I could take to get out of a speeding ticket and showed up to find a decent sized room with a group of metal chairs bunched together with not an inch between them. It was comical because it was so intentionally uncomfortable. 4 rows of 4 chairs. The big fat slob running the class is most likely a cop wanna be who couldn't pass the physical. He stared at everyone who came in the room as if they were stupid and told them to sit down. This is squeezing in with strangers shoulder to shoulder for no good reason. I told him I was going to pull one of the extra chairs from the wall and start a new row in the back and he acted like he had some kind of authority and that I was somehow subject to him- again, like I was in jail or something. I told him I would just pay the ticket and that his crappy little operation sucked. Don't give this sucker a dime. read more
