He will encourage and switch things up when appropriate to keep him motivated. Our son has learned a lot and is developing a good ear for listening to the drum beats of songs. I've been playing music with Kevin since the 80's, and he is a great drummer to work with. My son took lessons from him for years. He is an excellent teacher and really wants to help his students (both children, teens, and adults) improve. Part of that training is to help students who may do well in a classroom/lesson setting - to be able to play in live, on-the-spot musical situations, like an ad hoc performance or jam session, which really is very different from just playing a song per a chart or video. My twin boys, now 10 years old, started their drumming journey with Mr Kevin 5 years ago. It has been nothing short of a great experience so far and I have seen the boys grow their interest with every class. Mr Kevin knows how to work with each kid and tailors the lessons as needed. My son and I took classes from Kevin. My son is able to catch up the speed of Kevin teaching and learned a lot of nuances from Kevin. I could clearly see my son reached to above intermediate skill level. Kevin maintains an excel sheet to log the progress of each student in each class, that's very systematic and accountable way of teaching and showing the value of time and money spent on his classes. I am not qualified to assess Kevin for his skill level, but as musician (singer), I can clearly see his drumming is highly impactful yet soothing to ears. No doubt, he is highly experienced and professional grade musician. The only suggestion I have for Kevin is to keep patience with slow learners like me and allow them to learn at their own pace. Another observation is that Kevin is overloaded with administrative tasks like classes scheduling, fees tracking, etc.. for which he can hire a student or offload to someone so that he can give his full energy on teaching and technical aspects of the classes. Overall we are lucky to get Kevin as a teacher for my son (still active student for last four years) and for me for sometime. read more

After spending 8 years under Kevin, I can safely say that he is more than just a drum teacher. Coming to class and learning drums was the highlight, but his conversations, philosophies, stories, and music knowledge left me with so much more to take away. Our church has sent many students to Kevin's studio for drum lessons over the last 10 years, and with each student Kevin has laid a strong foundation for rhythm and opened their minds to thinking outside the box. Most recently, my son joined the list of students we've sent to Kevin, and I was able to witness Kevin's teaching style firsthand. I liked that over the years, Kevin transitioned from teaching from standard books to crafting his own teaching materials, since it demonstrates that he isn't just here to teach a standard lesson, but he has thought out what he wants to accomplish with each student and has a big picture in mind. Once a year Kevin organizes a drum recital, and brings in stellar musicians to play along with the drum students. It's a pretty big production and everyone always has a good time, especially the students, who get to "jam" with some big-timers. He never resists or tries to get out of going to lessons (which he has tried before with piano classes). My son is a huge basketball fan and player, for him basketball is everything. Drumming is complicated and nuanced and Kevin very easily picks on the little physical adjustments we can make to do it exactly right. His curriculum is fun as he varies it between rock, jazz, funk, polka - he focuses on the fundamentals and lets you thrive yourself.
