The Fox Goes Free - Bruschetta w/ Balsamic Reduction

My previous review provides more detail. However, I want to add the the Fox continues to serve great food with friendly, helpful service. Our server, Devon, made helpful suggestions, didn't hesitate to make informed recommendations, and handled a very busy evening with confidence and good cheer. Service was excellent, as was the food! The Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding is simply the best! I also enjoyed the adorable fox photos and art throughout the pub. The Fox is a sister pub to Magwyers (in Ajax), another well-reviewed pub. While Magwyers is very popular and often full, the Fox Goes Free seems to be a bit off the beaten track, located in that West Pickering Turning Into Scarborough area. There is plenty of parking both in front and behind the pub. Set back from the street, with a spacious, heated patio in the back, it has a welcoming, almost cottage-like atmosphere. Mix that with some tasty fare and great service for the Fox's winning combination!

Upon expressing my displeasure to our server, she advised that they now only have it occasionally as a special but that she would check with the kitchen to see if they would be able to prepare it for me (even though it was not listed as the special that evening) and they obliged. Now I'm not exactly sure what's happened over the course of time but this was the worst Bangers 'n Mash I have ever had! There was far too much gravy on the bangers, none on the mash and only a pittance of baked beans. To top it off, the bangers themselves were horrible and had no flavour at all. Apparently I will be on the search for a new favourite place for Bangers 'n Mash. Even thought the service was very good and they did agree to make the dish despite it not being on the menu that evening, I have to leave them at a 2-star for now because this dish was a disaster. So sad.

They seem to have resolved the customer service issues which plagued the earlier yelp reviews, as they had many waitstaff dashing about, and our waitress was quite attentive. She did not hesitate to recommend food specials, although she was clearly unfamiliar with the alcohol selections aside from beer. Neither my husband nor I are beer drinkers, so I stuck with the wine menu, ordering a pleasant Sauvignon Blanc. My husband had a rye and ginger-ale cocktail and then ordered a second (the virtues of the walk-to local pub). My husband ordered a banquet burger with a Caesar Salad. Somewhat mysteriously, the burger came with an egg on it. However, my husband said that it was OK, and same with the Caesar salad (lacked garlic, apparently). I ordered the fish and chips, which featured two pieces of breaded fish with somewhat ponderous breading. Being a fan of fried breaded food, this was not a problem for me, although I could only finish one piece. My husband ordered a coffee with a side of Drambuie (which was on the menu), and the waitress had no clue what this was until he went up to the bar and pointed her in the direction of the bottle in question. However, he did get his beverage of choice, and we had a quite reasonably priced menu for what we had. In short, don't come here expecting a gastropub experience. Rather, it is serviceable, standard pub fare, with a fairly diverse menu. Most people, I noticed, were not eating, and if they were, it was generally wings. Perhaps that's what to order here. Anyway, we will be back, because it is local and convenient. Just don't expect anything more than your basic pub food and beer-oriented selection. Nothing was terrible, but not outstanding either. Perhaps a smaller menu with more specialized fare would elevate the food but, as I observed, most people do not really come here to enjoy a meal. The sports screens are plenteous and diverting. If you live nearby and want a convenient place to have a brew and enjoy the game, then the Stone Corner may be the place for you.

Two fellows occupied another table. Hmmm, where is everybody? Despite being an Irish Pub, the owners appeared to be Indian. All the staff that I saw were Indian, including the lone server/bartender. Now, that's not a bad thing because I love Indian food. I was actually quite happy! I just never expected it to be disguised as an Irish pub. I chose the Butter Chicken (Authentic creamy butter chicken sauce served with rice and naan bread). It was actually quite good but not quite up to the standard of an authentic Indian restaurant. It seemed to be lacking some of the creaminess that I've become used to in butter chicken. So this was very good, but perhaps not as authentic as I was hoping for. The rest of the place looked like what I would expect from an Irish pub. The (faux) worn furniture, the dart boards, the pool table. the fireplace, a good variety of beer on tap. Hopefully the evening crowd is better. There is one thing that I found to be a turnoff - the strong smell of air freshener or some kind of cleaning agent. Tone this down for a better, more natural experience. Please.

Problem is, the regular patrons, that smoke, now smoke and vape on the patio. Servers do nothing. Pathetic. The smokers never followed the 9 meter rule, always a cloud of smoke at the entrance, next to a daycare. Now they take over the patio. So there are so more patios that are not ruled by the clients. Too bad, nice patio, and great food, but I'll leave it to the inmates. Mackenzie's, magwyers, portly, st. Louis, even Boston pizza respect your air.
