Absolutely Swindled - Disastrous Food, Broken Contract & Scams Do not hire Duane's Catering & Confections. I paid $2,985 for a catered event on July 18th, and it was a complete nightmare. What they advertise on their website is a complete lie compared to the cheap, low-quality service you actually receive in person. First, they scammed me right away. We agreed on a 5 PM arrival via text, but they showed up at 4 PM due to their own scheduling mistake and forced me to Venmo them an extra $60 "early arrival fee" under false pretenses. Second, the staff arrived completely unprepared and missed critical parts of our contract. They forgot the water and butter, forcing us to run out and buy water bottles for our own guests. They also brought zero containers for the iced tea/lemonade and no bins to chill the beer and wine. Staff actually abandoned the venue for 45 minutes to go shopping, delaying dinner service until 7 PM. Third, the food was cheap and completely inedible. The tri-tip was burned to a crisp, the chicken was bone-dry, the salad was plain lettuce, and the vegetables/rolls were clearly cheap, reheated frozen store-bought items. The lemonade and iced tea were just powdered mixes. To make things worse, their sternos were malfunctioning and ran so dangerously hot that the already overcooked food kept burning. The sternos filled the entire room with a horrible gas smell, and multiple guests complained until we had to ask the server to shut them off completely. Guests refused to eat seconds. I emailed management on July 19th to demand a 50% refund ($1,552.50 total) for this total breach of contract and have been completely ignored. I began communicating with Tayvion regarding pricing and menu options. This was the sequence of events: * We were initially quoted $1,500 to serve 100 guests. * That quote later changed to $1,500 for 60 guests, without clear explanation. All of a sudden there is a switch up on the price as soon as we spoke on the phone again. As you can imagine, consistency and transparency are extremely important when planning a wedding. Following this conversation, we ordered a paid sampler for four people. The agreed menu was: - Goat - Chapatis - Sambusas - Pilau - Vitunguu What we received instead was a large party tray of lamb and what appeared to be Mexican-style rice. Tayvion confirmed and was adamant on the phone that he was able to make all of this dishes. I have never experienced such a dishonest transaction with a catering company in my life. When I called to address the discrepancy, the conversation became hostile and unprofessional. Instead of clarifying the issue or offering a solution, the interaction escalated and I was met with four letter words and profanities..... and to top it all off racial slurs. I am beyond extremely disappointed. Wedding planning requires trust. You are entrusting a vendor with one of the most important days of your life. Clear contracts, consistent pricing, and respectful communication are baseline expectations. First of all I must say that Tavion did an incredible job helping me prepare a specific menu for our vegetarian diet and then he went even more in depth to come up with individual dishes from different countries we have visited. Domenic did an amazing job preparing the dinner for us. He told us about each item as he brought it out, all the unique ingredients, and even paired wine with the meal. He doesn't have a catering truck he's not a caterer he'll show up in a Toyota with everything stacked on top of each other because he just went and bought it at the $.99 store He was 45 minutes late and everybody was waiting to eat so unfortunately I didn't inspect the food until after he had left. the pictures on the website are not even close to what you will get. I paid $1500 for beautiful platters of clean food. I got a bunch of processed slop instead of meat platters, bags of coleslaw with dressing instead of oriental salads. The quality of the food does not match the pictures that are represented on the website. Duane misrepresents what he is capable of doing and then when it is brought to his attention he is dismissive and unsympathetic with no customer service policies to speak of at all. First, he arrived close to 30 minutes late and I was left rushing to set up the party as my guests were arriving. To make is worse, the picture below represents how the meat on the cold cuts platter arrived on the tray, versus the image of what I had ordered. It was stacked on top of the cheese which made it soggy and unusable. I did not have the time to unroll the meat for the party and it was unused. Nothing he delivered was good. Lasagna was made with jar sauce; it was served with dried potatoes and broccoli. It was ad like eating chef boy r dee in a can. The stuffed mushrooms were tasteless and the size of mushroom caps and burnt. It was obvious the salad was packaged and dumped into a tray. No bread. The chicken sate did not have any kind of sauce. Upon booking, Duane was always responsive to both my calls and emails, and was flexible and patient with our needs for our backyard event. Duane was amazing! I hired him for my wedding. Last minute my original caterer pulled out because we down sized (thanks COVID) and were frantically looking for something. From the beginning Duane was very communicative and fast to respond. He let us pick out the exact menu and worked with us through the regular hiccups that come with a wedding. The food was excellent. The Chicken Satay (and sauce!) and the Greek rice were our favorites. He also added large tortillas to the Greek food and everyone loved it and turned it into Greek burritos. He stayed to make sure everything went well, even though he didn't have to, and was the most cheerful vendor there. We are so glad we contact Duane! Duane wanted to charge me extra for a walkthrough. I met with other vendors in advance so that they all knew what my expectations were for the event. Everything needed to be time properly. Duane was going to charge extra outside of the quote he provided me. I wanted the serving to be family style. In my opinion, he acted like he didn't know what family style was.. In my request I indicated it was an 8 hour event and I wanted 2 servers, he was going to charge me extra outside the quote he provided me. I had 12 guests he was planning to charge me over $1900 or $166/person for a small pig, salad, 2 appetizers and a fruit platter. But most importantly, his contract is a joke. in my opinion. I wanted a personal chef to serve food at my birthday party, and everything had to be vegan. I wanted to do multiple small plates since we weren't doing a formal sit-down dinner. Duane sent me a ton of options to choose from, including some typically non-vegan which he offered to swap out ingredients to make it vegan-friendly. It was my first time hiring a personal chef, so I appreciated his responsiveness throughout the process. We did a call ahead of time so I could ask questions about individual dishes and figure out the right amount to order. In the last week before the event, I had some extra people added to the guest list. Duane was adaptable to the new order amount. He made the food on site (with some ingredients prepped ahead) so that it came out right at the expected time. We got a lot of compliments on the food from the guests (most of whom are non-vegan typically). Direct quote from a guest: "A vegan sandwich has no business being this good!" After the food was done, he cleaned up the kitchen space nicely, so that was one less thing I had to worry about. I am honestly so impressed with how everything turned out. What we got was soggy overboiled corn on the cob, heated chicken fingers from the box that were dried out and hard (not BBQ chicken), heated frozen packaged mac and cheese, and ribs that were baked and slathered in sauce which were probably prepackaged too by the way they tasted. We did not pay $29 per person to get prepackaged processed food. This was our holiday party for our hard working employees and to say we were embarrassed serving them this food is an understatement. What an insult to them for all they do for us! There was zero cooking skills used to prepare this and we could have done the same thing but better by cooking (heating things up actually) it ourselves. I have asked for a refund of half and received a PayPal of $10 for the beans that were on the quote but forgotten with the delivery. I hope they will do the right thing and refund half the cost back to the credit card as we do not use PayPal in our business.
