I would take my boys with me when I did food deliveries to Oakland Collective, so they can see what it is like to give back to their community. The work they do for the Oakland Community is all from the heart. The delicious food is made with so much love, and it's so darn tasty! We weren't planning on eating, but decided to come try it out! We had the oxtail and grits and the peach biscuit. Let me tell you, I give that biscuit 5 STARS! The honey butter sauce that's drizzled on top is so tasty and rich, I wanted to lick it off the plate! Despite being so rich, it wasn't over powering and had the peaches and goat cheese to cut the richness. The biscuit itself was so flaky and buttery! I could have definitely eaten 3 biscuits and called it a day! The chef came out to personally tell the crowd her youngest son was the one who "perfected" the recipe and man props to her son! I can't wait til they decide to sell that sauce in a jar. The oxtail grits were good, I wish they added more gravy but the taste was there. The grits were nice and chunky, but smoother than I thought. I usually like my grits more gritty. I think I would've liked it on some rice.

The crimini mushrooms were the unanimous crowd favorite, and the mesquite-grilled bone-in ribeye was simply unforgettable...perfectly cooked and so tender it practically melted in your mouth. We had Chef Manny helped celebrate my wife birthday with a wonderful brunch…read more After we connected, and I briefly share more about the dietary preferences, he put together an original brunch menu that fit the occasion and our group size, made thoughtful recommendations on what paired well together, and was very response and very flexible throughout the process. He also made a few last-minute suggestions, including adding a rice dish to complement the entrees. Since most of our family loves rice dishes, that ended up making a big difference to the party. He arrived early in the morning to prep everything at the house, and made everything from scratch, and as guests started arriving, the whole place smelled amazing from the fresh herbs he was using for the dishes. He served each course and was happy to answer any questions guests had. He also made a very tasty guac for guests as they were nibbling on snacks while waiting for brunch. The mushroom and walnut appetizer and the bourbon peach parfait were favorites with everyone. I especially loved the meatballs paired with the rice and pine nuts. As you can see in the photos the food looked amazing and really colorful and all dishes tasted as good as they looked :) I also appreciated how he engaged with guests while cooking. People would stop by the kitchen, chat with him, ask questions, and taste some of the food along the way. It made everyone feel included in the experience rather than simply waiting for the meal to be served. Overall, we're very thankful to Chef Manny for helping make the celebration special. Chef Oliver has catered several medium sized events (30-40 people) for us as well as dinners for just the two of us when we were too busy to cook for ourselves. Every event has been a food success! I've been attending Phil's dinners and dinner concerts since it was first called "In the Mood for…read moreFood". That's over ten years now and I have never been disappointed. He uses only the freshest ingredients and creates incredibly delicious all vegan dishes. I am not a vegan but if all vegan food were this good I would be a convert. He uses locally shopped ingredients including some of the finest local tofu and tempeh makers. He is about to publish his second cookbook and no doubt it will reflect the same rich cultural varieties he has presented in the first one and in the meals he has prepared. Vegan interpretations of MIddle Eastern, Thai, Chinese, Southern U.S., or whatever you wish all are lovingly prepared and served with both pride and joy. The music (not every meal) is an eclectic assortment of some of the finest musicians in the Bay Area and beyond. Phil, in addition to being a fine chef, is a musician, a shakuhachi player (that's a Japanese bamboo flute) and teacher. His deep connections to the music community allow him to invite some amazing colleagues who play in intimate house concerts. There is a sort of core "regular" crowd that I enjoy seeing but there are frequently newcomers and out of towners who go on the adventure to this non-descript West Oakland loft. The crowd (no more than 20) has always been a great part of the experience. I guess I drank the Kool Aid, ate the tofu, or whatever but I am forever sold on the Sound and Savor experience. This is definitely one of the great joys of Oakland and the East Bay.
