Before we departed he bought us espressos that we drank together at the counter like locals. We visited two beautiful vineyards/wineries with tastings of a nice variety of red and white (and one "green"!) wines. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We also stopped into Óbidos for a little stroll and lunch. He bought us some traditional chorizo bread on a little whim. Lunch had a nice atmosphere and good service, but the prices were drastically higher than other places we ate on our trip, and the food was a bit plain. This was only a small blemish on an otherwise outstanding day. We would gladly rebook something with Armando on a return visit!

We booked the small group walking tour on our first morning in Lisbon so that we could get a better understanding of the city and the culture and the history. We were incredibly impressed by Daniel Ribeiro who was our tour guide. His knowledge was really impressive and we learned so much on our three hour plus tour. He took his time and seemed to really enjoy showing us all the city. And best of all, he gave us some fantastic recommendations that we used a lot for the rest of our trip. Next we wanted to explore Sintra and get out of the city for a day. So we also signed up for the day trip to Sintra and Cascais. This was a great way to get to see Sintra and Cascais with an additional stop to see the most western part of Europe. The day itself was a little cloudy but it was April in Portugal. The palace was still incredible and what made it so great was our guide Andres. Unlike more tours where they drop you off and say meet you back in an h our, Andres actually acts as your tour guide through the palace and his knowledge was just so helpful in making us understand the history of it all. It was very appreciated. At the meeting place at the start of the day, there were so many people going on this tour, but we were split up into much smaller groups of like 6 people and each assigned a tour guide. It was all very well organized.

Otherwise, you will need to purchase a ticket from the driver onboard - he takes cash. The tram takes 90 seconds to climb the hill from Largo da Anunciada, by Avenida da Liberdade, to Rua Câmara Pestana. It departs every 10 or 15 minutes and carries up to 42 passengers. This allowed us to see all the high points, but we could deviate if something caught our attention - like ancient Roman ruins! What's interesting about this ride is that it is not an independent track. The path where the train rides is also open to vehicles and pedestrians. It is considered one of the most picturesque streets in Lisbon, if not Europe. The Elevador is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. The yellow funicular is the most popular one in Lisbon because of the steep hills. Unfortunately, it wasn't running when we came by on a Saturday at around 2:30. Maybe it only runs on weekdays? Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. To be honest, we didn't know much about Sintra . So we studied during the 35-min, or so, train ride and identified the key spots as well as some lesser known attractions to see . Turned loose at the Sintra train station, and being pretty independent explorers, we figured we'd walk a bit and get our bearings . We thanked a few tour guides looking to take passengers around the area and walked on . Within 15 minutes, it became evident we had a very long, uphill hike ahead of us . With a mild sense of defeat, we circled back to the train station and noticed a man with an inviting smile and a map in his hand . As we had only the afternoon to explore--and not wanting to waste his time--we asked if he could help us with a couple-hour tour of the sites . Miguel explained several possible options and quoted us an agreeable price . We hopped into his VW Beetle cabriolet and off we went . During, what turned out to be the most enjoyable, four-hour tour, Miguel provided the history of Sintra in an approachable and genuine manner . He brought us to several off his favorite--and less visited by the masses--spots . Because he is a registered tour guide, he can fast-track you past the long entrance lines at the popular historical sites . His English is superb and his energy is limitless . Through Miguel's eyes, we saw and tasted our way around the area in a way would not have even scratched the surface had we tried to navigate it ourselves .
