This one opened in 1884 and is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. If you've bought a 24 hour pass, you can scan your Viagem card and it's included. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a ticket from the driver onboard - he takes cash. The tram takes 90 seconds to climb the hill from Largo da Anunciada, by Avenida da Liberdade, to Rua Câmara Pestana. It departs every 10 or 15 minutes and carries up to 42 passengers. We booked the small group walking tour on our first morning in Lisbon so that we could get a better understanding of the city and the culture and the history. We were incredibly impressed by Daniel Ribeiro who was our tour guide. His knowledge was really impressive and we learned so much on our three hour plus tour. He took his time and seemed to really enjoy showing us all the city. And best of all, he gave us some fantastic recommendations that we used a lot for the rest of our trip. Next we wanted to explore Sintra and get out of the city for a day. So we also signed up for the day trip to Sintra and Cascais. This was a great way to get to see Sintra and Cascais with an additional stop to see the most western part of Europe. The day itself was a little cloudy but it was April in Portugal. The palace was still incredible and what made it so great was our guide Andres. Unlike more tours where they drop you off and say meet you back in an h our, Andres actually acts as your tour guide through the palace and his knowledge was just so helpful in making us understand the history of it all. It was very appreciated. At the meeting place at the start of the day, there were so many people going on this tour, but we were split up into much smaller groups of like 6 people and each assigned a tour guide. It was all very well organized.

The tram ride from one end to the other takes 2:40 and climbs one of the steepest slopes in the city. It opened for passengers in 1892. What's interesting about this ride is that it is not an independent track. The path where the train rides is also open to vehicles and pedestrians. It is considered one of the most picturesque streets in Lisbon, if not Europe. The Elevador is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. If you do plan to go to the market, I'd recommend combining the two in one trip since the elevador is not that close to the city centre. The yellow funicular is the most popular one in Lisbon because of the steep hills. Unfortunately, it wasn't running when we came by on a Saturday at around 2:30. Maybe it only runs on weekdays? Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. You never know when it may be randomly closed.

The station has an automated ticket kiosk and terminal but hopefully, you bought a round trip when you left Lisbon so you don't have to deal with that. For my departure, I scanned my Viagem card, read the departure board and get on my train in less than a minute. We took the Lisbon-Sintra train line & followed the crowds walking:10 to the historic center of town. There were buses, taxis and Tuktuks picking up passengers. We passed art on display & crafts people selling their wares. The station's main building dates from 1887. But it's worth going inside the station, as it's beautifully covered in tiles and includes a tourist office. It also has a ticket office and a ticket machine. We accessed the train platforms can also be done through the station.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

Bonus for me, the station has a few dozen luggage lockers. Easy to operate and now I don't have to bring my roll aboard suitcase with me all day today! Trains to Sintra are every half hour or so and they take about 40 minutes to get to the destination. The station has a couple of vending machines and a small coffee shop while you wait for your train. Automated ticket vending machines are in Portuguese and English, accepting coins, notes and cards. I was able to quickly purchase my round trip ticket. A quick swipe at the turnstile and I boarded. A couple of points off because the lockers only accept coins and not notes. The cashier at the ticketing window not only would not make change, she would not even tell me where I could get change. (There's a ginginja shop at the bottom of the stairs and I bought a quick shot for €1.45 so now I have change.) If there is direct access to the Rossio metro station, they need to improve their signage.
