I came to Ducky's for the karaoke. The staff was great, Britney offered some suggestions for whiskey, and Dan warned me that lagavulin is 20 an ounce! I'm on holiday, so why not? It has a strong smell, but it is smooth going down. The crowd was fun, and the karaoke wasn't too loud. Books, pen, and paper. No new school co.puter, but it was run well, efficiently. I've been to Ducky's on many occasions. I've sung my heart on stage after round after round of drinks. Yet, I don't recall ever making a decision to ever go to Ducky's. It's not the kind of bar you decide to go to, it's the kind of bar you end up at. You're out on the town, having a great time with friends and you're many rounds of drinks in and all of a sudden it hits you. You need to sing "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen at the top of your lungs in front of a bar packed full of strangers and there's nothing anyone can do to stop you. After you pat yourself on the back for choosing a song with such a fitting title, you should head on over to Ducky's It's a karaoke bar with a solid mix of party animals and regulars (who are also party animals) ready to rip up the microphone without even a hint of irony. I don't know what the food is like at Ducky's because to me, it's never really seemed like the kind of place you should order food from. They'll let you order pizza from next door and eat it in the bar for free though. Order pizza - there's a good chance it will be the best drunk decision you make all night. read more

I've been to Duckies a few times now and while I'm sitting here thinking through what to write in a review, all that comes to mind is that I have never made the conscious decision to ever go to Duckies. Duckies is the kind of place you just magically end up at, and are always wondering why you actually are there when 2am rolls around. It's the place you go to when your plans fall through, or there's no open table for your party at another pub. However, when you actually get there, you're reminded of the true joy you experience from a 7 nights a week karaoke bar. Whether that joy be belting out songs you listened to ten years ago, or drinking room temperature drinks, that's up to you. A couple tips I have l learned over the last year are: 1. Always go to the bar for a drink. If you decide to sit at your table and wait for drinks, you'll be be waiting forever. There's typically 1-2 servers to take care of the whole bar, which is clearly not enough on a weekend night when the place is at capacity. 2. The waitresses aren't always good at math, so sometimes you will end up over paying for drinks and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. So go to the bar to order your drinks so you don't get over charged! 3. If you want a chance to sing, you have to be there before 10pm on the weekends. Otherwise it's just same people singing songs that they requested hours ago. We were there from 10pm-1:30pm and three patrons were up on the stage each twice in that time frame, while no one from our party of 6 was chosen to sing any of the songs they put in for. Overall, if your looking for a karaoke bar that makes you feel like your in a small rural town, look no further. You've found exactly what you're looking for. Or if you're looking for a place where you can sing your heart out regardless of the night of the week, you are also in luck. This place is the superstar of dive bars in Calgary. I love it, but only because of the karaoke. I have been here a few times and I must say that the performances range from holy-smokes-you-could-of-been-a-pro to oh-the-humanity! But the spirit is always there! The karaoke usually starts after 9:30. Last time there I got so intoxicated that I forgot my bag at my table. Found myself inquiring about it a couple of days later (because of the recovery) and not only did they have my bag, they stored it in a safe place because it had valuables in it. Stand up place with waitresses that might just shank you if you get out of line. If you haven't guessed I am a big fan, though it is way too over-crowded on weekends! read more

This bar just isn't very good. The service is subpar and the menu merely average. But, perhaps worst of all is that it's karaoke night EVERY night. I guess it's just not my thing. The place is loaded with two varieties of cowboy hats: the type worn by people often seen on the back of a horse or tractor and the type worn only at the bar by people who couldn't tell the difference between a horse and a tractor. Come for the karaoke (if you mostly like country). As for karaoke bars, you usually only have two choices: Asian or random bar on a week night. Lucky for country singers, Ducky's does karaoke on the nights that people actually want to drink/ To be fair all of the songs aren't country and it may have just been the crowd who were there that day, but from what I saw it was mostly country. It will be busy, but what's the fun of karaoke if you're just alone? Service isn't always the most reliable so you may have to walk up to the bar. 7 days a week Karaoke?! Heck yes! Get there, sign up earlier in the night, if you want to sing. Their song selection is the most extensive I've seen, soooo many songs to choose from! The drinks are average prices, and I've never tried their food, but the karaoke is substantially entertaining. There are sometimes regulars, like the guy with the harmonica who sings and plays along to some country songs. It's a great opportunity to sing if you're shy (the crowd is always warm and cheers for you no matter how wonderful or terrible your singing is!). Spots to sing fill up quite fast around 10-10:30. Once there was a group celebrating at Ducky's by having a staff party outing, which would be a super fun ice breaker! Only note is that if you're looking for something along the lines of a chill pub, steer far away from Ducky's, because the last thing it would be is quiet. read more

The time to go to Ducky's is not on a weekend. In fact, it's way too busy on a weekend. When you're wanting karaoke and you need a bit more of an updated song selection than Nanta's, Ducky's can be your stage on a weekday night... like a Wednesday for instance which is where I found myself after hitting up Model Milk. Karaoke starts right around 930. Don't get there too early. Because, really, there's not a whole heck of a lot of reasons to head to Ducky's early anyway... unless it's to peruse the one karaoke book that's already set out and get your songs in early. The song selection is vast, and you'll get the odd awesome old person there to serenade the women in the crowd with lovely oldies (gentlemen, take note. I don't know a girl out there who doesn't melt when a man is singing her an old school love song. Any man... grab that mic and work your charms). That's the thing about Ducky's... it's not so dive-y that it scares me to go, but enough so that everyone kinda fits in. read more

I used to live a block away so I've been there a few times. I've only ever sang once (Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen) and I'm pretty sure the dj turned the volume way down on us - could have been the fact that my friend and I were talking during the song asking each other if we were good or not. Ahhhh liquid courage :) It's a super chill spot - there's a pool table and once you've had fun here, you can move on to any number of bars and pubs that are close by. This DEFINITELY isn't where to go if you're craving a hip and trendy hotspot with a bumpin' dancefloor but.... If you want to go out for a ridiculous night of shenanigans, have a few too many beer, and sing your little heart out, Ducky's is the place to go! The small dancefloor they have provides more than enough room to sloppily flail your limbs to your favourite karaoke "artist." The most entertaining karaoke in Calgary, hands down. The crowd is ecclectic, the drinks are reasonably priced, and you just can't beat the "live entertainment." Not a place to go if you want a relaxing, sober evening - but if you're in for some "ghetto" fun (without fear for your personal safety) , this is the right place! read more

We were trapped there last Christmas for a party that turned ugly quickly. The girls wanted to sing, so we went. Nobody was counting on the pros that show up there every weekend to practice. I mean these guys were taking the karaoke thing SERIOUSLY. I've experienced it before in cheap bars in other cities and it has always unnerved me. The secret I've learned is to talk quickly and without much thought to the person next to you so the singing doesn't enter your conscious thoughts. Drinking kills the pain, as well. That's probably why they do the karaoke thing, to sell more booze. But the girls had fun and I drank a lot that night. Things got weird later when the bar filled up with drunk Santas looking for a good time. One guy handed us a card displaying a stretched-out fat man with a Santa hat covering his little santa. I'm still not sure what business the man was in, but I wanted no part of it. Butchering songs is one thing, sexualizing Santa is something else entirely.... And yeah, that sold even more drinks. But at least the place has character and I love that more than a stuffy place where people sit around full of themselves. Ducky's probably makes more sense when you're drunk, so be sure to fill up if you go.... read more

Ducky's is a hoot and a Hollar! Always so much fun although sometimes the wait times are quite long but well worth the wait, the atmosphere is so great and everyone is there to sing some karaoke and have a good time. The only reason I rate this 4 stars and not 5 is because I have found some of the bouncers to be a bit rude and unnecessarily aggressive with people in line. I don't need to spend much time on this. This review is almost a copy 'n paste of another, 'Bob The Fish', because, this, is another 'copy 'n paste' bar. Handy location It's near better bars and restaurants, next to liquor store. Fast efficient barmaids, for a Tuesday, thankfully not too crowded, so perhaps it's different on weekends. Good size, neither too big or too small. BUT! The Karaoke seems to be every evening, it's overloud and destroys any conversation. However, this seems to be this places main draw, so perhaps all the 'blue-collar' people that inhabit this joint go for that only. (Conspicuous lack of black or brown faces in there...) It needs a good deep cleaning all over, Same old watery tasteless fizzy lemonade that stands for Canadian and American beer these days (Bud, Coors, Canadian, Labatts, kokanee, Big Rock Trad etc). Distracting tacky bar electronic games, Distracting 'me too' big screens showing things that one can watch at home. 2 grown men beating the pulp out of each other as 'entertainment' (UFC), or 2 sets of grown men beating the pulp out of each other over a piece of rubber (Hockey). One goes to a bar/pub to talk to people, not look over their shoulder to watch the oilers v leafs for the 24th game that week. In short, it is largely like every other 'me too' Calgary bar. It's so generic one could be blindfolded and taken into any other random me too bar in Calgary, and without looking at the signs, have no idea which bar one is in. Nothing of merit, apart from the fast service (on Tuesdays). If you like Karaoke and shouting oneself hoarse to be heard and generic beer, go nuts. Ohhh good ol Ducky's! If you have a problem with this bar, you have a problem with yourself! Who doesn't love letting lose on a Sat night? The karaoke is always amusing and they have every song you've ever heard of. They've also managed to cram a pool table in there for those who don't want to have a ridiculously good time on the dance floor. They're definitely understaffed but the service is still pretty good. It was horrible service and when I did get service they can't do math and I guess unless you know the karaoke host or are a regular of the bar you don't get to sing. Karaoke host was so disorganized. Keeps saying there's no time but then has 2 min conversations inbetween each song....tell people they are on deck!!!! Let's not wait 3 mins while Sally joe Bob are in the bathroom or doing a shot or smoking .... Fit ur new singers in make them feel welcome There were dirty glasses all over the tables. Spills everywhere. Didn't see a cloth to be found to wipe anything. Smelt like a sewer My glass had someone else's lipstick lips on it Waitresses couldn't handle the room. When you're looking for slummy Karaoke, Ducky's is where its at. It isn't an everyday kind of thing: who wants to listen to a bunch of drunks caterwaul old rock and country songs? But when you're in the mood, it's basically a fun machine. Just make sure you get enough people you are comfortable embarrassing yourself in front to go with you! The drinks are pretty expensive considering the atmosphere of the bar, rivaling that of many near-by night clubs. It isn't really merited, so I recommend getting your pre-karaoke kicks up at one of the nicer bars nearby on 4th (who will charge you the same amount for a much nicer bar, and often prettier people). Show up at 9:00 pm which is when the Karaoke starts (if my haze is to be remembered). The MCs tend to be pretty funny, even if the take the whole deal pretty seriously. If you manage to get a group of your friends out, there is a small and virtually unused dance-floor that you can tear up to somebodies over-serious rendition of "I will always love you". If you get there late, there will be some waiting time before you can sing your song. They try to cycle through everybody's first request before they let people sing again, though this does not always work in practice. As with all Karaoke bars, there will always be the Canadian Idol wannabes, but in my experience there is often just as many drunken idiots looking to have fun singing semi-awful rock, love and pop songs. The locals will often congratulate you for a job well done. Also the bar seems to be a pretty frequent arena for Stags and Stagettes. Nobody can really take themselves seriously at Ducky's, so go down looking to have fun. And don't be sober... That's rule # 1. read more

Really, my only probem with this place is lack of waitress and kitchen service. We flagged a server down and she was so swamped she couldn't come back to us for another 10 mins then when we were finally able to order food at 10:50pm she came back at 11 to tell us the kitchen had closed 15 mins ago. Seriously?? This place is open until 2am right? We were offered a menu for a pizza place down the street to make up for getting no food. They need more waitstaff and to keep the kitchen I open longer. read more

I recently went to Ducky`s to meet a couple of friends coming from an office Christmas party. After my friend had bought the first round, I went to the bar to get water for the two of us. The bar-tender responded with ``if you plan to drink water all night, I`m going to have to charge you for it.`` I had ordered one water from the bar, and, remembering that I had forgotten my friend, went back to order another. Apparently, ordering two waters in a row is against the rules at Ducky`s and elicited this wholly inappropriate reaction. I was taken aback by the rudeness of the bar-tender and returned, speechless, to the table. I implore all those reading this review to rethink their choice of bar, and find another place to satisfy their karaoke cravings. Ducky`s has no consideration for customer service, and cynically views every patron as just another item on their daily balance sheet. If you are looking for bars with karaoke everyday, I would recommend Nanta on 6th St. Down-town. It's more authentic, and the bartenders do not chastise you for ordering a glass of tap water. I would like to start with the fact that I have never written a yelp review before. I have never been so disgusted by the customer service in an establishment. My friends and I decided to go to Ducky's on a girls night after a FEW drinks. My friend decided to order a water, while the rest of us ordered drinks. The server was clearly upset that my friend wanted a water and wasn't going to add anything to her bill. I think her hope was that my friend would get escorted out while the rest of us stayed, but they were wrong. We asked why she was being asked to leave and we were given no logical explanation, we were told "it's standard." The bouncer also decided to push my friend as she was telling another girl smoking what happened, this girl was stumbling everywhere and clearly shouldn't have been let in, but I guess she was going to be tipping... she was let in as we were asked to leave and the rest of us got into many establishments since. Very poor customer service Ducky's. Do not go there if you want a water in a group of people, you will be embarrassed and asked to leave. read more

This is a nice dive-ish karaoke bar, complete with a few impressive hairbrush singers who really are good. As always, the hazard of karaoke in Calgary is encountering some serious tear-in-beer country fans. The service is good, and a couple of the staff sing pretty well. read more

Went here with my best friend and son in law on Dec 28th and had a good time. The singers were fantastic! While we were there, there were non of the slobbering drunks up who don't even know what they're doing. We went to the bar to get our first drinks and then found a table near the back of the room. All the other tables were taken. The waitress was fairly prompt on coming to ask for refills. However, when she returned in short order with our drinks, she had got mine wrong. Luckily she was at the next table and she fixed it in a timely manner. The host wasn't too interactive with the crowd and we could barely understand what he was saying (Perhaps he should take some of the low end out of his mic). The important part was that we could hear when he called names, so at least we knew when we were up. the crowd was enthusiastic as a karaoke crowd should be and cheered and clapped fro EVERYONE!. Speaking of the crowd, it was a good party atmosphere and the vibe was one that was conducive to having a good time. The only down side was that there were a lot of singers so it would have been a bit of a wait before we got to sing again. The only real problem we saw was as we were leaving. A guy outside was trying to take a girl's purse away from her (Not sure if they were together or not). The bouncer stepped right up and handled the situation wonderfully. Even though the purse snatcher was belligerent and clearly looking for a fight, the bouncer managed to get the girl's purse back to her without a physical altercation or escalating the situation further. The guy continued to try and egg him on, but all he did was call a couple more guys out to stand together with him while he politely asked the guy to move on. In the end, belligerent guy ended up shaking hands with the bouncer before he moved along. One thing to take note of that we only found out after the fact is that the parking is pay parking if you park in the lot and at $4/hour, it's not cheap. We found out as we were leaving that parking on the street is free. Oh, well. Next time! I would definitely go back (but park on the street). read more
