Extremely unprofessional service. Matt Raymond made one of my sides significantly shorter than the other. When I confronted him about it later, he refused to apologized instead he told me to come back tomorrow because he was busy. Matt Raymond refused to give me a refund and then laughed me off after making seem like it was my fault that he messed up my haircut. It was one of the other barbers who reluctantly fixed my uneven hair. The service at Duke's Barbershop is outrageous and they do not respect their clients. I walked into Duke's on the recommendation of a coworker who used to work in hair. I was nervous-- not a lot of barber shops specifically cater to women, but I'd seen pics of some rad looking ladies on Duke's instagram so had high hopes. I'm thrilled to report that those hopes were fulfilled and then some. Within 15 minutes of coming in I was sitting in Rocco's chair; I showed him a picture of what I wanted and after one quick glance he set about replicating it. He checked in with me a couple times during the process to have me check and confirm he was on the right track (he was) and took a lot of care giving me the shape and fade and length I was after. He also shaved my hairline with a straight razor, a first for me that I loved both the feel and look of. I couldn't believe what a great job he did reproducing the picture I'd showed him without repeatedly consulting it, but it was exactly what I'd asked for. This is my first time in the market for a new stylist in almost 8 years (even when I lived in Boston I still traveled back to Providence to see the same stylist I'd been with since I lived there) and I was nervous as hell. Being a soft butch queer woman trying to get a haircut can be a rough experience-- salons tend to be heavily gendered spaces, and convincing a woman to get out the clippers can be as difficult as convincing a male barber you belong in his chair in the first place. Happily, Duke's treated me like just another patron, and Rocco seemed excited to work with me on giving me a dope look that I'm really happy to be rocking going into the xmas week. It has been great to see the changes in décor, products, and services as they have grown, but what is even better is what hasn't changed. Since I have been going there one thing that had never changed is the consistency and quality of the service! The barbers there take their time and always do a great job. I received an acceptable haircut, just. My main complaint was that all three barbers were trying to cut hair with their eyes glued to a big screen TV showing a dumb 80s movie. The volume was blaring and when I asked them to turn it down, they grudgingly turned it down almost imperceptibly. Very unprofessional. The guy who cut my hair also seemed new, and spent like twice as long as what I'm used to, trying to get the fade right. This place needs to brush up on their customer service and not ignore customers. Have been there plenty of times in the past - always as a walk-in and always willing to go to first available barber. I'm not a demanding sort, my hair is very easy for the barber and I tip extremely well, so I assume I am a welcome customer. I have noticed over time that the barbers seem more interested in hanging out with their friends and taking care of them than they do their customers. Is this a social club for the barbers and their friends or a business for eager barbers that want to make money? I've always been taken care of with reasonable promptness in the past, so I've overlooked the "club" atmosphere. But, I went in recently on the Friday before a holiday about 2 1/2 hours before closing and waited and waited for next available barber. They were doing everything but taking care of customers. I understand that everyone probably wanted to knock off early, but they shouldn't have told me they could take me and then make me wait. After an hour of watching barbers with no customers ignore me, I got up and left and went elsewhere. read more

I've been to other barbershops in the area but Dukes the atmosphere and quality of this shop is levels above the rest. The owner duke runs a tight ship and all of his barbers follow suit! I've got a new slogan for Duke's that expresses the disappointment I have with their shop! I went in to get my head shaved, the entire thing, smooth as a baby's bottom. It should be a simple task for a barbershop. The vibe I got from everyone that's been there before is that it is a classy barbershop, a place where manly men with hair on their chest get their hair attended to before they head back to the forest to attend to their lumberjack duties. I heard it's the kind of place where they use a straight edge and hot lather like a real barber, giving you the closest shave for a decent price. What happened instead is my head was attacked by clippers and 3 days later I'm still in pain from the worst case of razor burn I've ever had in my life. I've been applying razor burn crème three times a day, and it's still not letting up. This isn't an exaggeration, I can't stress that enough. No straight edge. No lather. Just an expensive molestation of my head. After I had left their shop and got home, I discovered that I still had stubbly patches on my head. I recently moved to Albany and needed to find a new barber shop. After going through Yelp reviews, I decided to give Duke's a try. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my past barbershop experiences. The barber wasn't very interested in talking to me and instead talked with his friends in the shop, got confused over basic terminology (soft part vs hard, straight fade vs rounded), was /very/ rough with the clippers, and I didn't quite get the cut I was looking for. It's not a bad cut, but not what I asked for. A solid barber shop, but not staffed by master barbers as one would hope. I'll probably try someplace else for my next cut. read more

My experience here at Duke's Barber Shop was pretty amazing. I called in for an appointment since I know they can be pretty busy. I walked into the shop about 10 minutes before my appointment and Rocco was ready to cut 5 minutes before my appointment time. I was in the seat and I showed Rocco a picture of a mid-fade combover that I wanted him to emulate. The precision and quality in this mans haircut on me was impeccable. This is my go to spot in Albany for a shape up. Barbers are pretty cool and respectful. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars opposed to 5 is because there are times which I would make an appointment, however, I'd still be waiting once I get to the shop. For ex: I would make an appointment for 1pm and I would get here around 12:50pm, but I wouldn't get a cut until approx 1:20-1:30pm. Overall, Duke's is a pretty awesome place. read more

Duke's has been my go-to barber shop for a couple of years now. If you want an appointment, it's gotta be made 24 hours in advance, but I never make one. I've walked in every time. I think I've had my hair cut by each guy in this place, and they all do a great job. Cash only. $20 covers my cut and a tip. Duke's has a clean, cool vibe. The guys are friendly. It feels like an old school barber shop. They've got Netflix on the TV. In fact, that may be my only complaint about the place. The TV - I think they'd got it set on some kind of "smooth motion" preset or something. It makes even the best movie look like home video. Ack. read more

I have gone to Duke's before they opened on Madison. I was a client of Larry's and when he moved (after 3 years?) I moved over to Duke's chair. All five the barbers (Freddy, Terrence, Tom, Doug and Duke) are great at what they do. Experienced. Friendly. Passionate. I'm in the shop once a week and I can tell you these guys are the real deal. Duke often says to schedule an appointment if you don't want to wait -- as during peak times and days, it can get busy (a sign of a good and popular shop). They cater to students and professionals alike. Myself I book out, and walk in for my cut. Buzz cut, beard clean-up and straight razor shave. I personally cannot recommend Duke enough -- and surprised by some of the reviews saying the shop isn't friendly. They also have products for your hair and skin needs as well. The barbers at the shop are very knowledgable and up with the current trends in hairstyles and culture. I'm not a local and I've been there twice as a walk-in 'cause each time I was way overdue for a cut and went on faith and the recommendation of friends in the area. Freddy handled me the first time. Excellent experience. Duke handled me this last time. Again excellent experience. Now to decide who to schedule with next time. Both were excellent! Decisions decisions. As a walk-in I know I may not be seen because of the load of appointments. I took chances. No regrets. Very satisfied with their service and the pricing is very reasonable too. I stopped in to Duke's on Madison because I needed a haircut badly. I'd never even heard of the place and I saw that it wasn't listed on Yelp, so I was a little bit skeptical. This place is fantastic. Walked in, told the guy very basically what I wanted (I've recently had low expectations for haircuts so I didn't really care as long as I got roughly what I was expected), and he went to work. Nick, the guy who cut my hair, was meticulous and made sure that everything was even, and he even did a straight razor shave on the back of my neck (it has been years since I've had one of those). 20-25 minutes in the chair and he told me what I owed him (only $15!). I was floored. I was ready to get hit for $25+ for the premium level of cutting I got. This will be the only place I get my hair cut for as long as I live in Albany. read more

While killing time after just getting into Albany, I drove past Duke's. In dire need of a shave, I circled the block and walked in. I'm very particular about how my head is shaved (warm lather, straight razor, etc), and walked in to see that every station had one of these $400+ hot lather machines, and a wide variety of shaving implements. This sounds weird, I know, but it was important to see! A barber by the name of Rocco welcomed me warmly, and did one of the best jobs I've ever seen, not once taking a short cut (pun intended!).
