But not wanting the hassle of driving into downtown Albany and looking for parking I chose to give this a try based on the enthusiastic Yelp reviews. Many men simply don't find a salon meets their specific grooming needs. But, walking in your immediately realize that you are in an actual men's barber shop though it's staffed by both women and men. It's relaxed, informal, yet very professional. And from listening to the customers coming in and leaving as well as their phone traffic, it's a popular business and one fully booked. I have a full beard and I've had bad experiences in the past with having barbers carelessly and aggressively trim it, and today it was in serious need off trimming and rounding. The young woman who I worked with listened to what I wanted, proceeded gradually regularly checking whether I was comfortable with how she was proceeding, and simply did a splendid job. It was clear she had ample experience and expertise and I sat back and relaxed as she worked. My haircut was simple and standard. And, at the end she trimmed and squared the back of my neck with a straight razor. Normally I tend to get my hair cut randomly but I was so pleased that I immediately scheduled my next appointment. This was perhaps the most relaxed haircut and trim I've experienced in decades. I am admittedly persnickety, and I left here totally impressed.

I had watched the place being set up for weeks, and always meant to visit to check the place out. I needed a quality cut, but time was short with all the running around with family just before the wedding. I decided to take a short trip to Delmar and see what Gregory's would offer. Gregory's is a true barber shop. The place is clean, professional and caters to the needs of the men who visit. There is no choking on chemical fumes while someone is getting their hair permed, and no staring at empty walls while you wait for service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and greats you warmly every time. Most of all, Gregory's offers the best hair cuts I have ever had. Each member of the team takes their time to give the best cut possible. I have visited regularly for six years and have never walked away unsatisfied. Straight razor finish to each haircut is a great touch, makes you wonder how a haircut ever felt complete before. I am terrible at planning my time in advance so I am rarely able to take advantage of advance appointments, but the staff is always honest about the expected wait time and does their best to get to their customers as swiftly as possible. There are a few televisions and magazines that are generally worth reading to pass the few moments wait, so it has never been an issue. The few times I have been able to schedule in advance have always been extra pleasant, I highly recommend it if you're better at planning than I am. They now have locations in Clifton Park and a few location opening in Guilderland, so if you have not had the best barber experience. It's easy to miss Patsy's Barber Shop if you're weaving through the traffic of State and Pearl. You have to know to take the right onto Howard Street and go slowly enough not to miss the white neon tubing that brightens the shop and casts just enough of its glow onto the sidewalk to let you see the barbers ply their trade. Patsy's opened in 1930 at the cusp of the Great Depression, when a proper haircut was a man's resume and the newspaper on the empty seat was the employment office. It was a family business, like many that had dotted the downtown and further south to the neighborhoods that would eventually be sacrificed to Nelson Rockefeller's sense of grandeur. William "Tragedy" Yager now presides over the memories absorbed into the mirrors and the padded chairs. Since 2006, he's followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather, a man who likely opened up shop as he always did on the day Japanese planes set off for infamy. And anyone who's had a seat in one of his chairs and a hot towel on their face knows that Tragedy didn't just inherit a trade; he inherited a love and a duty to everyone that crosses the threshold. A large man with a long, thick beard and a tapestry of tattoos lining both temples, he wouldn't strike you as a man you would want to meet in a dark alley. But again, the seat, the hot towel, two minutes in conversation, and you'll realize that he's exactly the man you would want to meet in a dark alley if your car broke down, if you were cold, hungry and scared, if everybody passed you by. Because there are certain things you can expect from those possessed of the instinct of leadership. But what you may not expect is that sometimes, the places where matters are truly decided accept walk-ins.
