It's popular for a reason - their coffee is exceptional. Pretty much the perfect roast - a hint of caramel and absolutely no bitter or sour flavor to it. The staff are all very friendly. There isn't an excessive amount of seating but I was able to grab an open stool mid-afternoon on a Friday. It is bustling, so probably not a place to linger with a laptop. read more

Ladies and gents, let me expound ever so briefly on a phenomenon I like to call "Nerdification of the Bean." Brew chasers know what I am talking about. It seems that the hip and cool thing to do these days is proclaim yourself a coffee brewing Urkel: to deck out a shop with high-end espresso machines, scales and glass beakers; to don lab coats and throw around fancy terms like "distillation"; and call oneself a scientist in the chase for the perfect brew. Some even tout their credentials in their name (e.g., Sensory Lab in the David Jones). Don't get me wrong. Surely, there's a time and place for this kind of endeavor, and I, for one, applaud and support the application of scientific rigor to the pursuit of coffee perfection. But sterility can displace warmth; and the mechanization of process has a tendency to sunder art from craft. The top of Mount Olympus can be a lonely place. Dukes is a happy medium between two extremes -- the exacting lab behind glass and steel, and the plodding street cafe that serves its coffee only one way (burnt). They've got the Mistral oddity from outer space and the weighing scale, but with offsetting wooden cabinet finishes and an inviting teal facade. Is the one coffee I had here (a soy cap, $4.50; customarily served with a double shot, but still pricey) the best I've ever had? No. It was adequate -- bordering on good, even. Smooth and mellow. But in some ways, that misses the point. On a blustery morning, I sought refuge from the cold. That I found what I was looking for inside Dukes says as much about the cafe environs as it does about the coffee Dukes serves. Open Saturdays too (Yelp's hours above are incorrect). read more

Hooray! Even more great coffee in the CBD! I love the painted floor tiles, the light wooden counters and the sweet window seats. With more than half the floor taken up by prep counters and coffee machines, the focus is more on stopping in for a quick standing or takeaway coffee, rather than sitting for multiple hours talking. I love the seating at the end of the counter where the coffee alchemy takes place in furious fashion. Dukes is worth a visit for their precise pour overs or even a simple flat white using the Dukes espresso blend (my choice today), coupled with one of their delicious sweet things. Dukes on Flinders is the outpost of the Chapel Street flagship. The interior of the store is clean, minimalist, and aesthetically pleasing. Patterned tiles adorn the floor while a long line of mirrors on the wall make the space a visual delight. Relaxing funk music plays in the background, and there is a whole wall full of third wave coffee paraphernalia (v60, syphons, keepcups etc). There are about 15 spaces spaces available for seating, and a pastry case full of bread, sweets, and tarts. Come here if you're ever on Flinders. You won't regret it. read more

Had a pour over from Brazil and the barista remade it after first try. I did not like the taste of the coffee. I can taste the raw green bean flavor in it. Very impressive if you can find the place it's a bit of the beaten track, once I arrived I was greeted by a really friendly barista that made me an exceptionally nice mochachino. I love the way they have set the cafe up it has a really nice warm feeling to it which is refreshing, I only came in for a coffee but after seeing there menu I thought i would try the all day breakfast which had 2 poached eggs on toast, bacon, sausage & a side of pancakes which was superb. Over 100 check-ins, and maybe 300 visits... I can't get enough of Dukes. Yelp won't let me check in twice in a morning! They have updated their coffee machines so the UFO no longer adorns the counter; however they are now selling a Batch Brew for $3 a cup. Get it. Seriously, stop reading this review and head to Dukes. Super Ace! I receive honours in reviewing this place first. I actually noticed this about two weeks ago, on a work break rambling down Flinders lane. Notice that's incredibly hipster and Modern, but also a very good space for design. Not that's it's in incredibly close proximity to Alice Neivens or anything like that. I finally lined up a chance to get here, without it being closed, for it's a Monday to Friday operation you see. There's cakes and other little bites, and no doubt or course reputable caffeine dealings, as one would come to expect COFFEE in a place like this. As is common recently I have not sat down to drink coffee here but decided to opt for some retail beans. I got a great bean match for aero-pressing and the whole Transaction took under 30 seconds. Dukes serves as my my recent place in a long line of Awesome cafes with retail products available. I aim to go for a different source for my roasted beans each time, hence beginning something that probably won't ever finish. Blimming Excellent! read more

They've got a Strada for black coffee and a Mistral for white. There's different coffees on offer depending on whether you drink your coffee with or without milk. Whichever you prefer, you'll usually have a choice of a blend or a single origin bean, all roasted by Dukes. They also have a really cool filter coffee bar which really seems to have a focus on precision brewing. They sell a range of pastries and you can also pick up beans for your own brewing pleasure. What an incredibly sleek and sexy as setup. I love the fact that they have a gorgeous machine, sliding along to the milk dispenser, hidden scales and the temperature station ready for the filter goodness. Visiting for the first time, make sure you walk to the back of cafe, where the board has the list of options for your black, white and filters. Take your time, sit down at the pour over station and talk about what you would like. Linger, smell and slowly enjoy the delicious art the team delivers. read more

In my personal opinion this in one of the best coffee shops in CBD.I have been to a few in and around CBD, but everyone comes up a little short when it comes to the intensity and flavour this coffee shop has to other. This place had me at the little cup sign. It's really well designed, so much thought into everything. Compared to the established cafes on Degraves it's a great variation for the area. Caffine is really great, I keep going back so that must say something. Plus the little baked treads are totally fantastic. The lack of seating can be annoying if you want to grab a seat but it there were more it wouldn't be as cosy. But getting a table near the window is a great way to hang out and watch Melbourne walk by. read more

I'll take any excuse to visit the CBD sister cafe to one of my favorite south side cafés (of the same name) in Prahran. The interior has a lot thought put into the design: wonderful wooden panels, a huge and impressive coffee machine and staff that know tier coffee.
