My single room, 203, was simple but had everything I needed, (additional toothbrushes, combs, shavers etc are available at the front desk, very thoughtful in case you forgot an essential!) the bed was surprisingly comfortable and the view was amazing! The kitchen, housekeeping and the office staff were very warm and inviting, but were very respectful of the silence of the retreat. Speaking of the kitchen, the food was simple but nourishing, tasty and plenty. Loved all the fresh fruit and salad that was available at each meal! While the beauty of the surroundings itself was very conductive to meditation, it was the whole package that made this an experience that I will never forget. I hope I have taken a bit of the retreat home with me, but I can promise that I will be returning. A note of warning, if you decide to walk the .9 miles to Dumas Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, be advised that there are no restrooms there, and be prepared for a possible .9 mile run to get back to the retreat center! ;-)

1972: Federal Way was a destination suburb apparently. My parents moved us from Des Moines WA. that…read moreyear to the upshoot unincorporated area in the dark spot on maps of the day. An uninhabited wilderness just west of I-5 south of Seattle, and (in broadest terms) nestled against the northern most Tacoma limits. A wooded and enjoyable place where (I was yet too young, but legends abound) endless miles of wooded trails for teens on motorcycles and armed with kegs of beer could congregate nightly, telling lies and chomping down wild grown (organic! Free range.) Aminitas and Liberty Caps free of fear about their future or federales aka, cops. 1983: Still a Mecca to escape the tensions in a nearly realized tech explosion just a brief few years approaching. Many peers from California, all in general terms, the most despised of the lifelong Seattle natives oft spoken of as Seattle's real estate cancer. Little did we truly know! But the area dubbed by the earlier generation's youth, Honda Hills still slightly existed, but was forced a ways south, to what my peeps called The Wells. I still can't fer sure recall if I ever found these sledged wells or springs or whatever landmark determined this moniker. The 80s were my last gasps of childhood, as I stretched this lost boys period well beyond nature's and societies boundaries clear past Kurts demise, all the way to 1999.99. When finally attaining and accepting adulthood's downward spiral in 98 when I conceded to wedded domestication and ultimately ejection into the great Midwest steam bath more commonly referred to as Madison Wisconsin. Which aside from the bone crushing 5-6 month long winters, and moisture depleting 5-6 month summers (the 2-3 precious weeks squeezed into these diametric poles, which are pretty killer) is reminiscent of Olympia. Federal Way was great. Not that at the time any of us recognized this fact. 1993: Mostly the same, but since by this time I resides in West Seattle in the still mostly un gentrified area once not so affectionately nicknamed "Rat City". Not West Seattle proper, Roxbury and 35th. Shabby chic. Loved it. Miss it. Can't now afford it, nor can anyone currently either existing or hoping for arrival. Federal Way is now easily 300% vaster than its population when I was in high school. This was back still in my perspective of the 90s. 2003: I now have roots and all that. Just purchased my first home. One child alive and squealing and one soon to be sent to my wife's easy bake for finishing with an anticipated arrival mild 2004. Meanwhile, back in Federal Way over population is evident. My annual visits are repeated reawakenings of my realization that I'm not wanting to return as a resident perhaps. It's a metropolis of unreadable signs of too many languages to guess actual figures. Not itself bad, just an issue of initial skepticism, but later, like today, a realization that most of these signs indicate some amazing possibilities for excellent chow!!!! Back then I loved Italian food. I still do, but given my less insular awakenings, I now think essentially any Asian food can very safely be called my absolute favorite. Thai this morning, Vietnamese was yesterday afternoons clear first choice. I'm thinking tonight it'll be Japanese. 2021: Today. Live. From my parents living room this most current up to the minute review is simple. Federal Way blows. Just last night I didn't stop on the precise narrow margin of real estate, and instantly a few bright flashes occurred which will most likely result in un true but false photographic evidence that I ran a red light. When in fact I did stop. And stayed motionless for nearly 60 seconds, awaiting assurance that it was safe to make my right hand turn onto the road to return to safety of mom and dads place. This was like at midnight. Barely any tangible traffic, yet the gestapo overlords see fit to target one and all, 24/7/365, for our safety. I should be grateful, right? Federal Way flourishes as a memory. Is blows as a reality to those among us who knew it when it was still not on the map.
