The tour guides will tell you about the two houses built before the one that currently stands. The families that owned these houses helped form the midwest to be what it is today--something I never would have even imagined if I hadn't come here. Some of the wealthiest people in 1800s America lived in Menomonie. I'm taking away one star because I can't imagine that the tour would be quite as fascinating without my art history professor there, but it would be pretty close. This is a must-visit if you're going to be in the area!

One is the top side with a walk around the back and two a set of steps leading down into the bottom of the gorge. The parking lot is dirt and gravel and a first come parking assignment. Either walk you decide are reasonable at your pace. Getting the view from the bottom was the best view in my opinion. I enjoyed the water coming from the falls and beautiful details it provides.

You park and can go right up to the house, day or night, any time of year. The door uses a rope latch system and there's a sign asking people to keep the door shut. The interior is small, but there's an information wall that's a good excuse to linger and read. The original cabin, of course, was long gone before the books were even published, and this new version was the result of a fundraising campaign in the 1970s.

Our guide Livie was delightful, presenting the history of the Sibley family both animatedly and diplomatically. The Sibley House is the oldest privately owned house in Minnesota, and Henry Hastings Sibley was Minnesota's first governor. The forest beyond his house did not exist back then and he had a clear view of Fort Snelling. Several paintings on the walls depicted the view of the fort he would have had. Thanks to the Daughters of the Revolution, the house has been preserved with some original carpet from the 1850's and a few pieces of original furniture such as the melodeon (a piano like foot pump instrument that sounds like an organ). A great place to visit to learn more about local history!

Three homes show what it was like to live during the fur trading period of Minnesota history. The buildings are made with light-colored limestone and are very unique for the location that they are located in off of the banks of the Minnesota and Mississippi River. Interesting history - from fur offices, to homes, to onion storage, to museums. A neat little side excursion close to the airport, Fort Snelling, or MOA.

The woman at the front desk could not have been more friendly and helpful. There are many exhibits on local history, geography, culture, and industry that pack this museum. I really enjoyed the extensive displays around farming. They also had a traveling show on super hero which was OK. I could have spent more time given everything you could study. Definitely worth an hour or two of your time.

The Chippewa Valley Museum is a good place to spend an hour to get a sense for local history. There are things to read; artifacts to see; and a couple play areas for kids. Works for all ages. Takes about an hour to get through - unless you read everything. At the end, there's an ice cream parlor - for a nice treat. I found it an interesting lesson on how the locals adapted to changing conditions (forests, lumber, factories, modern times) to keep Eau Claire from becoming a ghost town.

It's not the biggest museum ever, but for the low cost of admission, it was worth walking around to…read morelearn about the biggest thing in history to have happened in the area. I would say Northfield is known for the defeat of the Jesse James gang and the museum gives great history to learn more about the event. Since it wasn't terribly busy the day we went, we were able to really look at and read everything. It was kind of neat that you could walk through the actual bank that was attempted to be robbed. There is also a rotating display, which happened to be about a local man who got to go around the world in an Airstream for a year. If you have 5 bucks and an hour to spend, it was well worth the time and money.
