Dr. Portland is a Sports Medicine Specialist with IBJ. I believe he only sees patients with…read moreshoulder and knee issues. I was referred to him after I had an upper tubular fracture (and also fractured some ribs) in the summer of 2014, during my one, and only, exciting attempt, at DOWNHILL mountain biking. Now, I did not realize I was injured after I fell off the bike. Since I could still walk, I figured I was fine. That was the rule we had as kids, right? If you can get up, you're OK? (Maybe I was just was looked after by older people, but that is what I remembered from my childhood.) Well, maybe I wasn't quite "fine", maybe I needed a drink, because I'm older than I used to be, but, after that, I was "A-OK". I developed a nasty bruise, but I figured, I might bruise easily. I was NOT going to be a wimp. Of course, I couldn't really bike at all with the broken ribs, so I became extremely frustrated with myself for not taking enough spin classes, and being so,"out of shape". I dragged my luggage back to Chicago, then decided, a few days later, maybe I SHOULD call the doctor. I just did not seem to be improving, and the bruise was looking a lot worse. Surprise! My arm wasn't healing because it was broken, but hadn't been immobilized. That bruise was internal bleeding from the break and a partially torn rotator cuff. Since driving with the arm sling I was ordered to wear is illegal in Illinois, I went back to Whistler, where at least you can walk around day or night. I really didn't care for the arm sling. I was just a little like the dog in "Up" in his "Cone of Shame". It was a sad. I returned to Chicago sans the sling, and had a few more x-rays over the next few months. My doctor was concerned because the fracture was not completely healed, according to the radiologist at ENH Vernon Hills. I was a bit perplexed by this, because my arm seemed to hurt a lot less after I found out it broken and stopped doing things, like lifting heavy objects. I felt OK, except my broken ribs limited my physical activity. My doctor suggested I see Dr. Portland, feeling that based on the radiologist's reports, I may need monitoring or surgery on my shoulder. I agreed, although I was not too happy about this development. When I arrived, I was seen quickly by Dr. Portland's student. He asked me to move my arm into a number of positions. He asked if I had any pain (no). He said my arm was very "functional", for this point in the healing process, which sounded good to me. Doctor Portland came next in and did the same thing. Then he asked why I had come to see him. I told him about the radiologist's reports and my doctor. He chuckled, and said, "I guess that the advantage of having seen a number of these injuries". Then, he showed me my x-rays. Basically, he said it was a tiny spot that could "barely" be seen, and I would be fine. Then, he apologized for the consultation being so,"short". I thought that was funny. Good news delivered quickly is my idea of the perfect consultation, really. Dr. Portland appeared to have a lot experience, and I found him to be very pleasant. I would definitely go back to him, if I had a problem with my knee or shoulder, and required the care of a specialist.
