Unfortunately, there is nowhere good to stop a car to take a decent picture of it nearby though there is a sidewalk that parallels the waterfront. Keep in mind that this is a private residence now, so no wandering on the lawn. The marker is on both sides. Here's the first part and the rest is on the website. Built in 1927 by A. A. Payne, a banker, and bought by John Christo, Sr., the house is significant in architecture, a mixture of styles typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries which includes Neo-Colonial Revival and Italianate Villa influences and the accomplishments of John Christo, Sr., 1885 - 1973.

This is the South and they love their Confederate War history here. The marker is in great shape and from here, there is a great view of the water. Near this site on March 20, 1863, Confederate soldiers commanded by Captain Walter J. Robinson repelled a landing by Union sailors led by Acting Master James Folger of the blockading vessel U.S.S. Roebuck. The 11-man scouting party of Union sailors was seeking to locate a southern civilian vessel near the "Old Town" spring, when they were reportedly ordered to surrender by Captain Robinson. During the ensuing skirmish, several Union sailors were killed and wounded as they fled to their launch boat. Quarter, or safe passage, was requested by the remaining Union sailors to retrieve their dead and wounded. Total Union casualties were six dead and three wounded. Union sailors buried four of the deceased on nearby Hurricane Island, and a fifth sailor was interred by the Confederate soldiers. No casualties were recorded by the Confederate unit, which later became Company A of the 11th Florida Infantry Regiment. After the conclusion of the Civil War, the remains of the Union sailors were removed to the national cemetery at Fort Barrancas.

Here's a piece: The McKenzie House is a large two-story clapboard frame dwelling built in the Dutch Colonial style typical of the turn of the century houses still standing in Northern Michigan. It was built in 1909 by Belle Booth who married R.L. McKenzie in 1912; after which time the house came to be known as the McKenzie House. It stands today as it was enlarged in 1925. This house is significant because it was one of the first houses in a virtually unsettled area of Northwest Florida and because it was the home and office of Robert Lee McKenzie. McKenzie was born in Macon County, Georgia in 1870. He moved to the Florida Panhandle in 1902 where he became joint owner of a large naval stores business. After acquiring some waterfront property here he organized the Gulf Coast Development Company.

I do think the wireless internet speed needs some serious improvement to be helpful or effective, since cell phone 5G is actually faster than the library WiFi. Lots of encouragement to attend local program events. Programming leans toward mostly children's and family programming options, and some look like very fun programs. Copying and printing is 10¢ per page, and the default print mode when wirelessly printing is double sided, so you can get six pages onto 3 paid pages. The staff didn't think wireless printing was possible, but when I attempted to print from my laptop on the wireless network to the network printer, it went through without issue, which was helpful for a document that I needed print from my laptop and not email to another computer. There's a collection of books, magazines, sometimes audio books and DVDs for sale for only $0.25 at the front if you want to pick up something to take to the beach that might get a little sandy or watery, or because you aren't a local library member. One of the surprising collection pieces are a set of cake pans and recipes for creative party celebrations.

I had to ask for help looking up a subject category because it seemed that you needed a library card number to use the computers. That's understandable, especially in a tourist town. The librarian helped us find what we need and our kids got to color a picture, play with a wooden train (quietly), and read some books while we waited out the rain. There was one very noisy little kiddo who was with us and the librarian did ask his mother to try to keep him a bit quieter, I assume from a patron complaint. I thought she handled it well and politely (she said "I can tell he's having fun!" in a friendly way), and to be fair, the kid was being VERY shriek-y while enjoying the train table. They also gave us a pen and a piece of paper to use for note-taking from one of the books, which I thought was nice. Thank you PCBPL for helping our kids have a wonderful day of reading and rescuing our trip.

Did you know that…read morethere was a time that you might not always have had the right to have the court appoint an attorney for all cases if you could not afford one? It's true, and it started here in Panama City. The marker reads: This is the site of the landmark Gideon case, after which the Public Defender system was established in Florida and throughout the nation. In 1961, Clarence Earl Gideon (1910-1972) stood trial in this courthouse for the felony of burglary. Lacking funds to hire a lawyer, Gideon requested that a lawyer be appointed to represent him at trial. Gideon's request was denied, because at that time, a person accused of a non-capital felony did not have a constitutional right to a free lawyer. Gideon represented himself at his trial and was convicted. While serving his five-year prison sentence, Gideon petitioned the United States Supreme Court to review his case. The Supreme Court issued its decision in 1963 in Gideon v. Wainwright, ruling that every poor person charged with a serious crime in this country must be provided a lawyer for his defense at public expense. Panama City attorney, W. Fred Turner (b. 1922) represented Gideon at his retrial and won an acquittal. Built in 1914, this building is one of only a few original courthouses in Florida still being used for its original purpose. A fire in 1920 gutted the building, but it was immediately rebuilt in its Classic Revival architectural style.

Leaving Florida in the 1970s, i have neither seen nor used the current library. But I remember both the Spanish Revival structure behind the old City Hall and its later children's annex in what was an adjacent Spanish-style structure that once housed a former, large public restroom. And I remember sharing librarian Jane Kindall's joy in moving into a modern structure on the Marina. This structure was replaced, apparently, some time before Hurricane Michael. I credit the Library and Ms. Kindall's acquisition choices with helping to prepare me for a first class postgraduate education and a lifetime of research.

It had a small auditorium inside. It was comfortable. The graduation was nice. It was put together nicely.
