We were bummed the museum was not open, but it was great to be able to go see some of the fish in the holding tanks. We walked up and down the space, even saw an area where there were fish that looked like they were recovering from something. There is a dispenser with fish food, so bring some quarters. We each took a hand full and tossed it out to them. There were three of us in our group. We had a chance to chat with one of the Colorado Parks & Wildlife staff. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and I loved it so much. For 50 cents we got enough fish kibbles to give most of the tanks a little sprinkling. I loved getting to see the fish, try to identify them, and try to target feeding the sick and weaker ones. Overall I loved coming here! I am so glad that it's open to the public to walk around, learn about the fish hatchery process, and see the adorable fish. read more

We traveled to Durango during pandemic in our RV so we were pretty limited on things to do but this place said it was open. It's all outdoors (or at least the part we were allowed to see). We were there during feeding time so we were allowed to toss some food in the fish. It was entertaining. Thee is not a lot to see here but it was a fun place to check out. read more

What a great educational, interesting place! Several volunteers that know their stuff and can help you appreciate the local area and fishing in particular. I had no idea Colorado was so involved in raising and stocking fish. It makes sense- we saw many people fishing. Great videos in the hatchery show how it is done! Lots of ways to learn more and appreciate the beautiful fish and wildlife and many animals that I had never seen up close... fangs claws and fierce snarls of stuffed bears & wolves! They had different sizes of trout, as well as species. They raise rainbow, browns, Snake River and native cutthroat trout and even Kokanee salmon! First thing to know, is to bring plenty of quarters to purchase trout food and make sure you get here with in the times that they are open. For little kids this is a fun place to watch and feed the trout, even for us older kids at heart! They have the fish in different long rows of fresh water and arranged by there size and type. Before you go out with the little ones to teach them fly fishing, this is a fun place to stop and check the trout out. A must place to check out for the kids! read more

Where else can you see thousands of rainbow trout and feed them too? Oh, did I mention the wildlife museum that features bears, coyotes, Bobcats, Eagles and more? But wait there's more, it's all FREE! You can still leave a donation too. It's not a huge place but it's fun for the kiddos and adults too. The Animas River trail is right exit door too, so you can walk off that delicious lunch you just had in beautiful Durango Colorado. My husband and I brought our girls (4 & 6) here not sure what to expect. We went around 9am bf the museum opened. We spent a good hour to hour and a half walking around the outdoor of the hatchery feeding the fish and reading about the place. I was not familiar with hatcheries so I found it all very interesting. We also walked across the river bridge to add to our time walking around outside. There are several fish food dispensers that take quarters. By the time we finished outside, the museum was open. It is FREE! We did leave a donation bc it was such a great experience! The staff in the museum volunteered lots of extra info and really made us feel welcome. It is very small but we were in there for prob 45 minutes and my girls would've stayed longer had I let them! What a great place to visit. Durango is very fortunate to have this little place. read more
