The recent speakers have been former MSNBC news anchor/author Joy Reid and Minnesota Attorney General/Author Keith Ellison. The Osborn Brilliant home is another dazzling example of the good work being done by Brilliant…read moreDetroit. The grounds are kept up.  There is a beautiful mural on the fence surrounding the yard.  There is a studio on the basement for exercise, dance and other things.  Computer training, reading and community involvement is all available.  It's a great place if you are looking for neighborliness, training and information.  It's all about family and community at the Osborn Brilliant House. I had a great time there with Director Bradley.  She took time to go over the facility with me and explain what is being offered.  After talking with her I knew what was up and what was available for me and what I could offer.  It's a great partnership and a shining example of the Spirit of Detroit. Here's a little more in their own words - "We met Mr. Preston when we were considering the move to our newest Brilliant Detroit home in the Mohican-Regent neighborhood of Osborn. He heads up the neighborhood group leading change in his area and we connected immediately thanks to the recommendation of Quincy Jones and Kayana Sessoms of Osborn Neighborhood Alliance. I've been to the harvest festival at this location two years in a row (The festival by the way is…read morereally nice every time we come). I realized the last time I went that there's a kronk boxing gym in the same building. Not only that, I then found out a month later that JBCVC offers tutoring for kids, has a learning lab and a library, and there's another gym inside the building that hosts pickleball games on many days throughout the week! I'm sure they offer much more and have them listed somewhere online, but I was personally amazed at just the few opportunities I found out about.

I grew up in the…read moresurrounding area and I have fond memories of my mom spinning stories of what it looked like inside and of the underground tunnel and bowling alley. My visit did not disappoint! The event we attended had it all. There was food, Motown music, karaoke, and dancing. This historic home is beautiful and kudos to the home owners for keeping such great care of it. The home is a treasure.

There's three floors with a separate section for children, teens and adults along with the traditional categories. They hold book readings, used book sales and author talks. I love that the library is centrally located. Clean restrooms and the library very well organized. They even have a mobile app! Decor is nice with plenty of space and artwork. The staff is pleasant and helpful. The library is very well used and busy and that's a good thing!

Southfield Public Library is not only a great asset to the Southfield community. It is also a…read moretourist attraction for the Metropolitan Detroit area. It is acclaimed to be one of the finest libraries in the country. It is wonderful to have a third generation of my family enjoying and discovering all that the library has to offer. My granddaughter loves the children's room. Her imagination gets to run with the kitchen play area, doll house, puzzles, puppets and the books. This puts me in the mind of the Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You Will Go! The library has plenty of room and space for the whole family. Parents please note: You MUST keep your children with you at all times. You also can not drop your children off and leave them unattended for their safety.

Mama Akua Community House, founded by Dr. Yusef "Bunchy" Shakur, is vital to the Detroit Black…read morecommunity. It is important for different cultures to have spaces where they they can go which represent their beliefs and their and their folks. I attend the Community House on a regular basis to participate in a woman's circle. The Ava Jo Gathering Space holds the vibration of love and feels very warm and cozy. The esthetic is a bright depiction of African and Black American cultures with lots of art, posters, and inscriptions on the walls. There are always various event flyers, business cards and leaflets to take. The community house includes a cyber cafe, and co-working options and is available for a variety of activities facilitated by different community groups, and businesses. The gathering space is also rented for baby showers, pop-ups, and other celebrations and meetings.

There is a great ESL discussion group at WBLIB that's run by volunteers most weeks on Thursdays at…read more10 am - 12 pm and Wednesdays at 7:00 - 8:30 pm. All ages and English language levels are welcome. You can even bring your kids along if they're not in school, and you don't have to talk if you just feel like listening. It's a nice group of people with many learners coming often who have become friends outside of the library from meeting at the weekly group discussion. If you're not busy, please stop by sometime and check out this awesome (free) class. It's has really been a fun experience, and I highly recommend it! The class is held in a meeting room near the adult non-fiction area and some of the study rooms. A librarian can direct you where to go. :)
