I liked Durty Nelly's a lot, although, I don't remember much about it. I was super drunk, and I wrote texts to my friends saying that it was "the best place we've been tonight by far". Whatever set it apart from the others, I'm not too sure. Obviously there's beer there. read more

Oh my goodness! I was not expecting this level of service when we decided to eat here. This is a pub, but we were treated like we were eating in a fine dining establishment. Shawn and John Luke served us, letting us know that the kitchen was slammed and it may be a while before our food came out if we wanted lunch. The bar was clean and the noise level was not annoying. We ordered anyway, and the wait was not too bad. The fish & chips were cooked to perfection and the slaw was some of the best I've ever had. The ham dish was SO GOOD. The root vegetables were steamed to just right, and the mashed potatoes did not taste like they were instant potatoes. And, the Irish Coffee was a perfect tipoff to dinner. This is our first trip to Nova Scotia and this is the first restaurant where we have eaten here. Thank you, Durty Nelly's. This was a treat and we're so glad to have eaten here. read more

HORRIBLE service staff. We went to Durty Nelly's for drinks and supper last weekend and were extremely disappointed. Our server treated us as if we were bothering her to ask for anything. She was not attentive whatsoever, forgot things we ordered, took 15 minutes to bring condiments we had to flag her down to request after food was dropped off, and generally had a sour attitude. It is clear the staff here are miserable and have zero standards of service. We will certainly choose elsewhere to spend our money. read more

The host, the server, the selection of beer was great, it was clean and had a nice patio, But I don't enjoy the food. The Mac and cheese was huge and the bacon and onion added was generous snd worth the $5 extra. But the cheese sauce was just not that good. I usually give 1/2 my meals to my husband. He didn't want it. The muscles needed a more flavourful sauce and a piece of baguette with it. My husband fish had a pool of oil on the top. He pressed his fork into it snd oil squeezed out on the plate and left a larger pool of oil on top of the fish. He ate the fish, but left the batter. It was soggy with oil. It's too bad because it looked great and everything but the food was spot on. read more

One friend in our group was craving Shepherds Pie and wanted to find a place that made it, so we went to Durty Nelly's. The server was friendly and the atmosphere energetic. When the Shepherds Pie came out, we were all impressed with how artistic it looked. The mashed potatoes were swirled around the meat and veggie layer below. My friend said it was the best Shepherds Pie he ever had. I opted for the "smoked meat" sandwich because I saw "smoked meat" advertised throughout Canada. It was like a Reuben but with meat other than pastrami. Very good. Although the menu said you could substitute sides for an increase in price, it was a pretty hefty increase ($5) to switch regular fries out for sweet potato fries. Can't remember what others ordered, but one friend had the lobster roll and said it was really good. read more

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant for the first time a few weeks ago. I'd like to be able to give an actual review of the food. But we didn't even make it that far. Between the bartender and waitresses, no one could be bothered to attend to us after seating ourselves and waiting close to 15 minutes for service. After leaving and going elsewhere for our meal, we came to find out from the locals that this isn't an uncommon thing, and it sounds like we dodged a bullet on the food anyways. read more

We liked but didn't love the seafood chowder. The beer list is surprisingly limited, although we enjoyed an exceptionally well-poured Guinness on draught. This is a Liverpool FC bar, which was fun to happen upon as Liverpool was thrashing hapless West Ham but felt like might have been unpleasant if the score had gone the other way. The washrooms were remarkably clean for a pub. Worth a visit but set your expectations accordingly: This is more of a sports bar than a gourmet restaurant or a taphouse. read more

The good - decent enough beer selection, some quaint live music and a fairly decent plate of mussels. The bad the prices too high for what you get, the staff was not very helpful, worst of all the charcuterie board was a total failure. I know it's Canada but Canadian bacon has no place on that board, No dried salami and no prosciutto as clearly stated on the menu. When I brought it to the attention of the waitress, then the manager, I was simply told that it's actually a cheese plate but they haven't updated the menu to reflect the change. WOW! If you have an item on the menu it's pretty fair to assume that's what is being ordered. If you don't have it say as much, don't try to flail your way through it by lying to your customer. Incredible service by Sara, patio seating with view of the water, excellent beer choices(with her recommendations), fried pickles & pretzels apps were sooo good, hands down best gnocchi I've ever had with cheese curds, roast beef and onion followed by a carrot cake to make it my favourite meal in Halifax yet! While Durty Nelly's may not have the history of the Three Amigos of Haligonian pubs (The Old Triangle, The Lower Deck, and Henry House), it's doing damn well in its own right. Good pints, food and a packed weekend crowd, this place has a little bit of everything. On one of my recent visits, a group of several friends and I came by for our fifth annual night of fish and chips, beer and hockey (Fee', Chee', Bee' and Hockey, in bastardized Newfie parlance). Naturally, this was our stop for the first three before heading over to the Metro Centre for some hockey. Despite it being a game night, there was still plenty of seating when we arrived around 5. Most of us went with the event's namesake food for our meal, their two piece fish and chips with coleslaw and tartar sauce. After a reasonable wait considering how badly we just slammed the fry cooks, our plates of crispy carbs were in hand and I eagerly dug in to get my belly full in preparation for the continued volumes of beer which were to come. The fish was a good size and combined with the pile of fries, made for a hearty, if not healthy, meal. The batter was on the dark side of the spectrum, but other than a few extra crispy edges, it was good. The fish inside was cooked to a pleasant doneness, although it was fairly unremarkable beyond not being bad. The fries were hand-cut, had a fair bit of crispness to them and a nice potato-ey flavour to them. The tartar sauce was a bit too tangy for my liking, looking quite dark and likely having too much relish or capers in it. Overall, not a bad meal, just not in the running for best fish and chips in the city. Our waitress was pretty busy as the supper and pre-game crowd grew, but she took good care f everyone and kindly took a dreadful chicken flatbread off a friend's bill. For the late night, weekend sort of shenanigans, Durty's is solid spot to come. You'll find it packed on any of the big nights, so you may not get a table, but there is the lovely serpentine bar that runs nearly the length of the whole place. Not to mention that it is nearly patio season, if winter ever completely loosens its grip on us. You'll see all sorts of people here on a weekend night - students, young professionals, more *ahem* aged professionals, as well as the requisite sketchy old guy(s) awkwardly hitting on the aforementioned students. It's a guaranteed event, so if you're by the dance floor, enjoy the show. The live bands put on a good show with the typical pub songs, and as I mentioned there's a bit of space for dancing, although I'm more of the type for soaking in the atmosphere and the alcohol. The owners may have spent way too much money on furnishings all built in Ireland, but they put together a good Irish bar. read more

Great Service, Amazing Atmosphere and the best veggies burger I've ever had... but why the cheap ketchup?! I don't know about anyone else but I need my heinz ketchup when I'm eating fries, and if it's not it throws the whole meal off! We went quite late (10pm) and were afraid that we wouldn't be able to order food but there wasn't any issue. We noticed that it was quite packed around this time though as the line up to get in grew larger around 11pm or so. Also I'd like to point out that our server was amazing, I didn't grab her name but she was a newfie! Needless to say, we will go back for sure! TIP - As someone who doesn't drink beer I found it extremely expensive for any cocktails so I ended up with a cider ($7.50). The service was great! Bartenders made you feel at home right from the beginning. The seafood chowder is AMAZING! Full of seafood and flavor. Loved it! I had the Shepherds Pie and my husband had the Bangor W/ Mash. We loved the flavor of the Bangor and they are homemade right on site. Mashed potatoes were good too. I was falsely accused of throwing up in the bathroom and thrown out of the restaurant aggressively. I asked if I could speak to the manager and was refuse. I don't think a bar/restaurant should be allowed to treat a customer that poorly. I've been to Durty Nelly's several times and each time I like it more and more. Who doesn't love a good Irish pub? The coolest part of this place is that it legit is Irish. By that I mean that it was completely designed and built in Ireland. Sayyy what? They built it piece-by-piece in Ireland and then reconstructed it across the Atlantic. The first time I came here I had a grilled chicken and baked brie panini which was amazing. Have it with sweet potato fries and your belly will thank you. The bread is grilled to perfection and the entire thing is health conscious with a little health check on the menu. The chicken is juicy and thick and the brie compliments it wonderfully. Who don't like a nice hunk of cheese with their meal? Cheese please. I've had the panini probably 3 times since then and it is still as scrumptious over and over. What to wash it down with? Durty's bar is immaculate with plenty of sultry Irish beers (Guiness, hubba hubba) but this lady has a huge addiction to Caesar's. These guys make my second favorite Caesar in the city. It comes in a mason jar with a handle and a spicy bean. I've also had Nelly's veggie burger and found that quite tasty as well. The side Caesar salad had a little too much dressing on it but other than that everything was delicious. The bigger better nelly's burger seems to always make it to the plate of my boyfriend. With a huge steak knife teetering two onion rings straight through the burger, what kind of person wouldn't want to tackle it? Vegetarians perhaps. Last but 100% not least, the Bruschetta flatbread is disgustingly delicious. I've had this as an appie to share but in reality I could've eaten it all. It's not too big but the feta and balsamic is the bomb. Pricing wise, I find everything to be middle of the road and not too pricey. Service has always been great each time I've been there. Not hungry? No worries, Nelly's brings in one heck of a crowd on Friday nights. So grab a 10 sheet and get your hiney a Guinness at Nelly's. read more

First things first, I came here with 5 of my friends late on a Saturday night and granted it's a bad time of the night to visit a bar in downtown Halifax but.. There is no reason to heard people around like cows in a barn yard every 15 minutes, we ordered drinks from the bar and went outside to sit on the patio, a server then came up too ya and asked us to move inside as the night was slowly coming to an end. We gathered up all our stuff and moved to the window inside, no big deal right right? Then we were asked to move from out window seat further inside the establishment... once again like an old episode of little house on the prairie we gathered up all our stuff and wagon hitched our way further inside. After sitting for about 20 minutes some of us went out for a cigarette, the man at the door didn't let them back in. They instructed the staff at the front they had a table, stuff and friends waiting inside but were met with difficult obstacles from staff. After they were let back in the lights turned on and it was time to go, when we went to use the washrooms before leaving the staff told us they were closed.... Like come on.... you can't herd people around all night, block them from coming back inside to get there stuff and then tell them they can't use the washroom... I understand that everyone works hard and dealing with drunk dummies on a daily basis is a pain to work with, but it all starts with treating people with some level of respect. You know how I always complain that there are so few places to go out for a proper night on the town (and subsequent regrettable morning on the floor) once you pass the 19-22 phase of your life? No? Then clearly you haven't dedicated enough of your time to monitoring my many feelings. 'Cause I complain about that a lot. Luckily, Durty Nelly's came to my rescue. While before it was just a place I'd go for a great pub feed, a recent visit in its prime time showed me where all the cool people are hanging out. The casual, friendly party atmosphere felt just so right compared to every other bar blasting Pitbull as the soundtrack to one-night-stands in the making. Despite being crazy busy pretty much every night, bartenders, bouncers and servers all manage to not just keep their cool but also their personality. That is to say, we've found the holy grail of good times without the nasty 'hot spot' service that makes you want to stay in for the rest of your life. read more
