Jan 11 & Apr 11 You can only live in Dartmouth so long before you end up at downtown stalwart Celtic Corner, and that's where my wife and I found ourselves on a post-holidays weekend, when looking for a relaxed meal. We leaned into the Irish options on the menu (don't you dare call them British!), as I ordered the Trinity Steak Boxty, and my wife went with the Curry 'N' Chips, with added chicken. Our food came out to us in quick order, and we were soon happily chomping away on our brown foods My wife's curry and chips is a pub classic, and while I appreciate that the curry was served on the side and not making the fries soggy, it is very not visually appealing to see plain diced chicken on a pile of fries. Once it got a dousing of the curry sauce it looked a little better, but let's be honest, a dish of assorted shades of yellow and brown isn't winning any beauty contests anytime soon. When reading the menu, I had incorrectly remembered the boxty as a pastry dish. However, while it is a dish of meat and sauce in a carb shell, it's actually more rustic than a pastry, with the exterior comprised of shredded potatoes. The potato pancake had a significant char on the edges that was just seconds from being full-on burnt, but the flavour (and crisp edges) worked well with the indulgently rich filling of steak, mushrooms and onions in a cream sauce. I'm happy to note that the bits of tenderloin were pleasantly tender and not at all dry, which isn't always the case in these sorts of dishes. Service was attentive and friendly throughout our meal. A return visit saw us returning on a bustling Friday evening during Burger Week Bash. I wasn't on a Burger Bash mission, but I figured that I would have the opportunity to try regular menu items many times in the future, plus I had a blood donation scheduled for the following week and I could use the iron top-up. The Irish Burger was a hefty, half-pound patty (a mix of lamb and pork), topped with red cabbage, goat cheese, fried onions and a garlic aioli. I appreciated the unique mix of meats for the patty, and while I'm not confident in a high lamb content, it did have a good, meaty flavour and had a decent crust on it, although it was a little overworked or compacted and too dense as a result. Some people hate on smash burgers for their ubiquity, but that style of burger avoids things like this. The toppings all kinda got lost together in the creamy mess of the goat cheese, but they worked fairly well; saltiness, savouriness, and a hint of crispness from the slaw and fried onions. A brioche-ish bun was nicely toasted and held up well against the onslaught. My wife's maple curry pasta felt like a flashback to the 2000s when this dish was on the cutting edge of Canadian fusion cuisine. It was familiar and approachable, and it was nice that they had a gluten-free pasta option as well. The Celtic Corner could use a menu revamp and upgrade their plating, but it's still a welcoming neighbourhood local that's served Dartmouth for many years, and will do so for many more to come. read more

My boyfriend and I are in Dartmouth from out of town. We were told what a great place Celtic Corner was. We had only had two drinks each before leaving our hotel to go out around 9pm. We went in to Celtic Corner, were given menus and seated. When the server came ro take our order we asked about the price of a pitcher of beer. She disappeared for a minute or two, came back and told us we were too intoxicated and asked us to leave. I have never felt more belittled and disrespected in my life. An awful sad experience for my family and I. Service was very slow and we were never checked on. We experienced uncooked fish, missing food items and I didn't even have cutlery to eat my meal. We witnessed many tables leave due to not being greeted or served- I wish we had left when they did!!!! No hand soap, dirty old menus and extremely hostile staff. WATCH YOUR BILL My sister and I went here on a Sat and then again the very next day on Sunday. We each had a glass of wine both days. On Saturday, we ordered nachos to split and on Sunday, we ordered fries and gravy to split. One of those days, we got charged $13 and change and the other charge was $27 and change. I went back twice to address the issue with staff. I have my bank records but the manager would not listen and threatened to call the police to have me thrown out when I got upset that he would not refund my money even with proof. I've been putting off this review not because I wasn't a fan, but because this place is totally awesome. 5 stars across the board from service to food to beverages. Decor is cozy, well lit, large distressed wooden tables, feels like a real Irish pub, but located right across the ferry terminal in Dartmouth. Great live music, traditional Irish pub fare, steak and Guinness pie is my personal favorite. The service is always friendly and fast. When there is a band playing I find it a bit loud, but it's a small place so it nothing they can really control. I love this spot! It's my "local" and I am there often- the staff are awesome and supportive, they host the monthly ukulele night, St.Patrick's Day and so many other fun events. Food is adequate to good. Beer selection is always good, and bar service is speedy. Bathrooms are clean. That said, I do wish they'd upgrade a bit- the seats are torn, the stairway up to the patio is horrendous (the poor servers!!) and in general it looks past its prime. I always bring guests here and am vaguely ashamed of the appearance. I wish I didn't have to be. The owner has put in new washrooms to serve the patio, which seems like a wise choice, liability-wise. The patio is wonderful, with live music often. It, too, could use a wee upgrade as the windows showing the awesome view are scarred by various storms. A friendly, safe place to go, even as a single woman. Love this place. read more

Great hole in the wall pub the food is average and could use a little work. I had the Mango Chicken Wrap and my wife had pasta. Asked for Hot Sauce and our waitress said they did not have Hot Sauce? Really mind you the poor girl was slammed with an entire full patio to serve by herself with no help and she was doing her best under the circumstances. Let's start with the good - the patio is great! Went here on a really sunny lovely day. Really big and has great views of the harbour, It's a really great place to visit in the summer, I'd suggest taking the ferry over from Halifax, to double your great views of Halifax action. The bar downstairs is large and really nice as well. Good beer selection. This all sounds great right? Why the two stars? Here comes my two star review: the food. My friend and I ordered the seafood platter, it was not that great.. not even for a pub. I've eaten a ton of seafood over this past summer and this was the worst. It was so bad I was sick all night when I got home. Really disappointed, I have an iron stomach usually, but not with this seafood platter. OK - time to review the local drinking corner - and what a corner it is. I've been there twice in the past week and of course every time it feels like going home. The Friday after work crowd has an amazing feel! Just sitting around munchin on nachos drinking a beer and relaxin'. The place was packed yesterday on a damp Friday in mid-February. The nachos were stacked and the beer was properly chilled. Nothing pretentious here. My mid-week visit was a little quieter - good for a chat. That night I had the soup/stew of spoon/fork consistency - excellent and likely the heathiest meal I've ever had in the place as I am not known for making smart choices in pubs! Only minor complaint is that they have stopped serving the Garrison IPA - now substituting the Hop Yard Ale. Both are fantastic - but the IPA is my favourite and getting a bit hard to find around town. Can I help it if I occupy a narrow, highly discerning niche of selective beer drinkers???? Time to start staking out a table for another infamous St. Patricks Day Breakfast with Guinness! Celtic Corner can do no wrong. It has fantastic in-person dining and their catering side is just as wonderful. I've been fortunate enough to do both many times and I never leave feeling unsatisfied. Located in downtown Dartmouth, just across from the library, it says "Irish pub" like few places do. The interior is done up with gleaming wood and brass, with both tables and booths available. There is also a private room for functions to the right of the door and several more secluded booths at the back, which are perfect for business lunches. Often, there are also armchairs by the fire which make a great place to wait for the rest of your party. In warm weather, they open up the rooftop patio which is well shaded and affords a great view of the harbour. I can't think of anything I've tried that I didn't care for. The house salad is a great combination of both green and pasta salad with a tangy dressing. The Steak and Guiness pie is to die for, as are their sandwiches. On the catering side, Celtic Corner provides a generous allotment of food. Give them as much notice as you can, as they are busy and I have sometimes been out-of-luck when hoping to make a last-minute order. The Celtic Corner is definitely the best bar in Dartmouth. I live in Halifax so I don't get there that often but since I grew up on that side of the harbour I have lots of friends that still live over there. When we meet up it usually is the half way point which would be the Celtic Corner. This place has a fantastic patio that is open during the Summer months, you walk up a set of back stairs, through a parking lot and end up in a little oasis overlooking the harbour with great views of Halifax. They have your standard bars on tap, reasonably priced and some decent pub food to indulge in. Friday nights are the best night to go if you are looking for a bit of a crowd. Which is a mix of locals who have lived in the neighbourhood for years, and people coming home from work in Halifax. With the new buildings in the area you get a good mix people and there is always a story to be told at the end of the night. There is a live band on the weekends, mind you it is usually one of those typical maritime bands playing hits from the 90's and staples like "Farewell to Nova Scotia" and "Barretts Privateers". They also have a great breakfast menu, reasonably cheap and good portions. Try their Breakfast Quesadilla. All in all a decent spot to have a few pints with friends on the other side of the Harbour, great excuse to take ride on the Ferry and see Dartmouth. read more

The bar is laid out on one floor with a separate section off to one side - presumably for larger groups, and with 4 little enclosed booths in the back, and a rooftop patio open in the summer. The Celtic Corner offers many of the traditional items that you would find in a pub, but also offers some of their own specialties. Well I don't get to Dartmouth too often but when I do in the summer, I usually end up here on the patio. They have such a fantastic view of the Halifax skyline. The perk of Dartmouth is looking at the waterfront of Halifax. The food is simple but consistent. You will not be disappointed but it is your standard pub fare. Their Fish and Chips were pretty on point, even in a city full of F&C's. The service is always great friendly, helpful and not overwhelming. Yeesh. So I ordered the veggie burger with mashed potatoes and vegetables, while the girlfriend got the Blue Cheese Portobello Mushroom burger. My burger was burnt to a hard crisp on the outside (felt like a brick). It was also super dry. The mango chutney was great, but probably store bought. Here comes the rough part. The "mashed potatoes." These brought me back to when I was a fussy kid who hated potatoes. These days, I love them. The potatoes I would guess were cooked yesterday, sort of mashed (hardly), and microwaved today. They were so clumpy, and dry. Every couple bites I had to drink something. I wasn't even that mad.. moreso just in disbelief. How do you goof on potatoes? My girlfriend found her burger to be very bland and lacking as well. Honestly I started at 2 stars.. then she had a bite of my potatoes and had to walk to the kitchen and get something to drink because they were whack. My Celtic Corner experience is limited. I've visited a grand total of once. But it was a hot summer evening, and we were headed to check out the patio upstairs. After the mysterious trek through the back stairs of the building, finding the parking garage out back where the green turf carpet somewhat elusively led us to the patio stairs, I was pleasantly surprised. This is one seriously fantastic summer patio hang out. there's a bar and wait service on the patio and the view of the Halifax harbour is not to be missed. The wait staff are quick and friendly and will either run a bar tab for you or let you pay as you go. The varied eats on the menu are your standard pub fare plus some Irish favorites. I didn't go to eat, but seriously enjoyed sociable time on their patio. I've really only popped my body into the ever so dartmouth loved Celtic Corner like 3 times in my life. Each time, I soak up the overwhelming robust atmosphere. She's definitely a pub! And you definitely can't knock it. I love me a good pub. Each time it's been ridiculously packed and the service never suffers because of it. It has such neat little private rooms tucked away into corners. Some are large enough for 10ish people! Or small enough for a romantic make-out sesh to stumble upon. I've split calamari and nachos with my friend Aimee and they were delish. Mixed drinks or beers, they got a good handle on both. I've got my eye set on the patio this year. Even though I have to shuttle my ass over the water to get there, it's definitely worth the effort. It has a good solid mix of the older and younger crowd. Ever look at a burger and think "damn! This is gonna be good!" And it wasn't? Well it's not gonna be here either. What is good is the atmosphere, and the service. The kitchen staff should all be flogged, or the manager should be looking at making some changes. My burger was just dead, not a lick of juice in it just dried up dead. My server didn't even try to replace it when I sent it back, and I didn't want him to. Sometimes you just know it's not gonna happen. The food here is what you'd find at most English style pubs. Deep fried and easy to execute. The atmosphere is great though, live music playing with fiddles and drum. Tons of nice ppl. I also got to watch the worst date ever unfold! I haven't been here often, but, I've enjoyed it each time! On Saturday's they seem to be quite busy - with a live band and extremely attentive bar staff who keep reminding you that you have ordered shots earlier with "can I get you another round of shots?" The atmosphere is great, draws a good crowd, and they have a roof top patio! Downside - the dance floor is very, very small. I've seen people take advantage of it, but don't expect to do much dancing. So far so good in my books... I'll have to return and try their food! read more

Need a great place for fish & chips and a cold Guinness ? Well search no more I've found the place. Celtic Corner is a Celtic gem found in downtown Dartmouth ..but don't let this stop you from checking it out. Inside you will find tons of comfy booths as well as your typical pub style wooden tables and chairs. The walls are covered with Irish type things. In the evenings you can pop in and check out some great maritime / Celtic style musicians, they always have a full line up. The menu a Celtic Corner is not giant by any means, however what it lacks in size and selection it makes up for in taste. I recommend you try the grilled curry chicken burger, the Black and Tan onion rings and of course their fish and chips, but don't forget to chase it all with a tall pint of Guinness. The prices are pretty reasonable , you could order ALL my recommendations and it won't break the bank . My only beef with the place was the washrooms looked as if a hurricane blew thru them the past couple of times I've visited, which as a female is a bit of a deal breaker. BUT, I expected a bit more richness to the Potato Pancake covering diced up steak, mushrooms and onions. It was ok, but not great. I've had the Maple Curry Chicken, and it's great, but it won't make up for the Boxty... Service: 5/5 Friendly, quick, welcoming. Can't complain there. Location: 4/5 Being on the Halifax side, it's a bit much to get to, but once you're there? It's great. 3 to 5 minute walk from the ferry, located right in the heart of Downtown Dartmouth. Easy to find, and right on a main road. Atmosphere: 5/5 Celtic... Corner... What did you expect here? Green and gold colouring all over, celtic knots abound, and a music stage right by the door. Just writing this review makes me crave the days of summer. The days when the crisp golden sun tattoos your body, and an ice cold beer is all that can soothe you. First off, the patio is first class! It's on the roof, and all you can see is the crisp blue ocean! If you're lucky enough to land a table up there, then you're set for the afternoon (and evening too)! However, try your damnedest to not 'break the seal'. The bathrooms are more than a trek away, and by the time you return to your table you're going to have to go again. This is the only drawback, so suck it up-- it's worth it. The food is always great, a little above most pub food standards. The fish and chips are usually what I order, and fill me to the brim. I have been with people who have ordered the Club house, and Veggie burger and they were just as satisfied. Lastly, the service is very upbeat and friendly. It's a very lively and busy pub, so the servers tend to get a little overwhelmed but make up for a bit of tardiness with their charm! read more

Went here with a group of Yelpers for a Saturday afternoon, beer and bite. They accommodated our group of 11 pretty easily. Drink orders were promptly taken and arrived pretty quickly. A good selection of beer, I believe I had a Harp. A couple plates of nachos and a munchie platter were ordered for the table. Those too came pretty quickly. The nachos were piled with lots of good stuff and the platter full of deep fried, breaded artery clogging goodness. I ordered chicken wings for myself and B had the corned beef sandwich. I asked for the sauce on the side. The wings were very breaded and deep fried, the sauce just a basic bottle hot sauce. They satisfied the craving but really didn't wow. B's corned beef sandwich was ok, the slices of meat were very thick with a big hunk of fat on each slice. Again, good but didn't wow. The service was great, the price was good. I was facing the wall so really can't comment much on the decor and ambiance. I think it's a good spot to come for an afternoon or evening with friends. I just love the Celtic. They can accommodate large groups on weekends for live music, and they've got snug little hidey-holes for intimate date nights. This place is great! The atmosphere is fantastic! It really feels like a real ol' Irish Pub! They have great live music and the staff is always very kind. The food is above the normal standard for a pub in this city and they carry the old traditional irish meals as well as local and canadian! I personally love the chicken and broccolli fettuccini alfredo. The drinks are always cold and the surroundings are always warm! What more can you ask for! Oh yes! Theres more! In the summer months, if you are lucky enough to get a table, they have the most amazing patio! It is a rooftop Patio and it looks directly out onto the Halifax Harbour! It is AMAZING! The only real downfalls i could possibly say towards this place are, 1) When it gets crowded and they have a band playing it can get very loud (however being a small venue, this cannot really be prevented) and 2) if you are up on the rooftop and you need to use the washroom, its a bit of a hike to the bathroom All in all, I love this place. My Aunt took me here the other day so I could try it as she highly recommended this place. I could see why as soon as I stepped in through the doors. The atmosphere was really beautiful and dark, with an Irish feeling to it along with some music playing from the speakers to set the mood and tone. The waitress took a bit to get to us and didn't seem pleased I had already gotten my Aunt an I a menu from the counter but she served us professionally. I ordered the Ploughman Lunch and did not expect to get what I got, especially for the price it was. It was basically a four course sandwich platter, but I ended up finishing it with amazement, satisfaction and joy. If your ever looking for a nice restaurant to be with your family or friends, or even just to feel like your on vacation over in Ireland this is a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy your meal. read more

Ah yes, the time is once again upon us that everyone insists they're practically Irish, that you should kiss them, and that they can hold their liquor just fine thankyouverymuch, so there's no better time that the present to review my favourite Dartmouth pub. The Celtic Corner is big, bold, and all Irish, all the time baby! It's actually-in my opinion-the only bar that downtown Dartmouth can be proud of. It's always hopping after work, weekend nights are packed, and everyone's always in good cheer whether they're a group of twenty-somethings getting the night started, or a group of more mature (in age) folks who are set on shutting the place down. The service is always friendly and fun with most of the folks working able to hold their own against well-natured drunken sarcasm, although when it gets as busy as it can get, you may need a little more patience. Still, the drinks are always tasty and strong, the big food menu is delicious, satisfying, and able to please a wide range of eating-needs, and it doesn't take long before you start recognizing the regulars and feeling like one yourself. After spending much of the summer on the Celtic Corner rooftop, I suggested it for my mom's birthday dinner. My family hadn't been here for a few years, and it reminded them of how much of a gem this place really is. I'm a recent transplant to the Dartmouth side, and Celtic Corner is my go-to pub for impressing visitors to my side of the harbour. The rooftop patio (if you can find your way up there) is a pleasant surprise after a bit of a sketchy walk, and if there's room up there, it's the only place to be. In the evenings, the main part of the pub gets very loud very quickly, so if you want to have a conversation, come early. The food is consistently delicious, and the service is alwasy prompt and courteous. Defintiely the best and busiest pub in Dartmouth. read more

I went for a lunch meeting today with a friend to Celtic Corner. First of all, their atmosphere is fantastic, as soon as you walk in you feel as if you have been taken back in time. The wooden floors and dim lighting gives it a true rustic feeling. I ordered their chicken clubhouse on multigrain with only two peices of bread and a greek salad with no olives. The meals came within less than 10 minutes of ordering and my subsitutions had been successfully fulfilled. The clubhouse was delicious with soft warm bread and perfectly cooked bacon. The salad came with a grapefruit vinegrette (AMAZING) and the only thing I would have to suggest would be for them to add both green and red peppers. Otherwise, the meal was fabulous. I seem to go here on the worst possible days - like when a conference on a Sunday takes over the joint. Having said that, the service was pretty darn good considering there wasn't a free seat to be had. My food came faster than others because I ordered what may be the fastest thing to cook - the all-day breakfast (I believe this is a part of the Sunday only brunch menu). And my all day breakfast? It was all-day breakfasty and I can't complain at all. The toast is some kind of hearty bread, as opposed to generic store bread (which has it's place in the world of the all-day breakfast...I'm a bit of a connoisseur) and including baked beans is a nice touch. The Corner is my lovely local, can't beat rolling down the hill to drink (and the walk back up the hill is made infinitely easier with gin). You will always run into people you know and your beer (or gin) always arrives promptly and with a smile. One doesn't go to the Corner for fine cuisine, and as pub fare goes, it's reasonably priced and pretty yummy. Boyfriend almost always gets the maple curry penne which is super good, and can be made with rice for gluten-free friend (a nice option). I really like their seafood chowder, yummy and filling. Sharing with friends and in the mood for something greasy? The appetizer platter is only $15 and will easily fill up four people. They pile on the mozzarella sticks like it's going out of style. A Dartmouth staple, and go for open mike night if you've got a free Tuesday! read more
