It was my first time trying this place, and I loved it! Our waitress was very nice and attentive throughout the visit. Since it was windy outside, we decided to sit indoors, and the atmosphere was really lovely. I ordered the mussels and the lobster roll. The mussels were absolutely delicious, I honestly could have ordered another plate. The lobster roll, however, didn't quite impress me as much. I think mine may have had a little too much pepper, but it was still good overall. I've just had better before. Despite that, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back. read more

Decided to give this place a try for lunch. Seeing as fish and chips is one of my favorite dishes ever, I had to try it here. The fish and the fries were perfectly crunchy, and paired perfectly with the tar tar sauce. If you love fish and chips, definitely give this one a try. The server was kind and caring. Hearty meals, fresh salads and soups, draft beer, wine, cider and specialty cocktails round out the menu offerings and friendly local bartenders provide the quiet ambiance for great conversation. My wife and I came here after our Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour. There was one Keith's beer left we hadn't taste tested yet and we were determined to try them all. So for the last beer, which was the Bohemian Lager, a nice staff member at Keith's directed us to this quaint little pub! Nice staff, great people and conversation, and excellent beer! I am blind and travel with a guide dog and under the Blind Persons Rights Act of Nova Scotia, I have the right to enter a restaurant with my guide dog without showing any paperwork. The hostess at this establishment insisted on seeing the paperwork, luckily I had it and I only showed it because I just wanted to try one of their beers before rushing back to my cruise ship. She even asked her manager so it wasn't just her. Guess this place thinks it's okay to violate the law and turn away blind people with well behaved guide dogs because most (particularly tourists from the US) do not carry paperwork with them everywhere they go because it's not required. I will add that some Canadian provinces do allow restaurants to request documentation but Nova Scotia is not one of them. I hope with the bad publicity from this review that this restaurant will apologize to me and get their act together so no one else has to go through this. read more

From the moment you enter the door you are welcomed. The Brown Hound is a cozy neighborhood bar/restaurant where the bartender and locals welcome you when sitting at the bar. The beer selection is excellent and the food is top notch. Started with the PEI mussels which were plump and flavorful. I had to also try the poutine with sliced banger which was to much food for me. I did think the gravy was a bit rich for my liking but the dish had everything you would expect. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and talking to locals will for sure be back. read more

What a warm and cozy little pub we found in Halifax! The beer was cold and tasty. This was the one place where I gave found and an IPA that I actually liked!! Stellar service from the kitchen, as always. The two waitresses at the bar treated me as if I were invisible while they chatted up their friends at the bar. No biggie. There are loads of other restaurants to choose from. Sometimes you encounter snobs. That's just life. I just hate to think that it's at a place that usually has great service. This place has the #1 best burger and best fries I've ever had at a restaurant by far. No other place even competes, and I've been around. The burger is so big I could hardly fit it in my mouth and the beef is very good quality with excellent flavor. The bun is perfect and even the pickle seemed extra good lol. And the garlic rosemary aioli is MONEY. I ordered extra to dip my fries. The fries had crunch with every bite. 10/10!!! These guys know how to deliver! Serving size was perfect. I like leaving a restaurant feeling full! It was my first experience there but it was my boyfriend's fifth time and he said they are consistent with the food quality every time. The only positive note was that the music selection was on point. Other than that, yikes. My friend and I got there, found a table, and waited for the menu. And waited, and waited. About 15 minutes later, the waitress came by finally. When we were ready to order, we waited again and, you guessed it, waited and waited. About another 15 minutes later, we finally had the waitress take our order. We both ordered the same thing - mac and cheese (friend also asked for a water refill). The dishes came out after 30 minutes but only 1 mac and cheese - they forgot to make the other one. I said no problem (after all, I've waited almost an hour, I don't mind waiting a bit more, but then again, I'm a bit more patient than your average person, haha). My friend finally got her water refill, again, after a very lengthy wait. When my mac and cheese FINALLY came out (another 15-20 minute wait), it was utterly bland and tasteless. Kraft mac and cheese from a box has more flavour. Most of the macaroni pasta around the edges of the plate was super dry and hard, making it completely inedible. The breadcrumbs on top didn't really add anything to the dish either. It was just a bland cherry on top of a bland sundae. At the end, we asked for the bill and yes, we waited for another 15 minutes or so until we finally GOT the bill (had to ask two different waitresses). When we got the bill, it was incorrect (listing 1 cider on my bill, instead of 2 on my friend's). Overall, everything about this place is so completely forgettable and bland. There are SO many other places in Halifax where you can get good timely service and edible food with some decent flavour. I still can't believe I paid for food that has less flavour than water. read more

Swayed by some good reviews and interesting menu we stopped at The Brown Hound. I'm not going to be talking about the atmosphere, it seems to be a nice joint. However, food-wise we were very disappointed. First of all, the menu online and the printed menu differ. We came here in part because several websites mentioned that fish and chips here made with cod and not with haddock, which was confirmed by online menu. Printed menu said it is in fact haddock. Then, we were immediately told that the restaurant is out of fries so anything with fries would have to be substituted with mash or salad. Seriously, guys, half of your menu has fries in it, you're open till 1am, it's only 9pm and you're out of fries? So poutine is off the table, I guess. Fish and chip? No chips (and wrong fish). Substituted chips with mash. And guess what! Got upcharged for this substitute. For the forced substitution because they were out of fries! Apart from that the food was fine. read more

I'm a fan. Service can be questionable. The food is consistently good from my experience. Beer on tap is crisp. Small selection. Having said that, you can't go wrong with a pint of Keith's on their happy hour. Very reasonable. Go sit out back on a sunny day with your dog. Great spot. I embarrassed myself by eating enough for a church choir at one sitting in this quiet, tasteful, comfortable pub. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a beer, and I give it my strongest recommendation in that department, but the food...amazing. The poutine is graced with a hearty gravy that packs a nice punch of spiciness; the fries are beer-battered and delectable; the mussels are muscular; the bangers bang. The burger and fries were the best I have ever had. The burger was cooked to perfection and the bun was phenomenal. The fries were hot and crispy and the aioli was to die for. The serving size was excellent and it left me happily full. The place was packed but service was quick and so friendly. I will definitely be back and will recommend to all my friends and colleagues. Great location within walking distance of all the major hotels downtown and CFB Halifax and the dockyard. Friendly staff and very good food, much better than I usually think of on a pub menu. Most of the time when I order any salad with chicken, the chicken shows up as a grilled sliced breast thrown on top of the salad. Not here. The chicken in the warm spinach and bacon salad was small marinated pieces, nicely tossed with the excellent chopped bacon, feta, and tomato, with a house made balsamic dressing. Not a candied pecan in sight, either, thank you. My husband had the chicken korma and said it was excellent. Attentive waitress with a good sense of humor. Awkwardly bad serving staff. Arrived at this place and was charmed by the detailed decor and no frills menu. And then.... A confident server boasted on the greatness of their brunch menu which, despite not being written down anywhere, was supposedly just like so good. She sped through the menu options. Not sure what they were but I think I heard something about eggs and Guinness gravy?? Anyway after assuming we already knew the menu she then promptly exited the establishment to buy a monster energy drink. When she returned to take orders she didnt bring a note pad ('cuz, you know, she's professional) and but still took every opportunity to upsell our selections. She even managed to upsell yours truly on the Guinness gravy! So anyway ~45 mins later something that vaguely resembled our orders showed up. Not a bad little spot, if a bit on the cozier side. The food is not bad either, nice tasting gravy and great fries, but the burger was dry and had a strange rubbery texture. The servers themselves are friendly, though obviously disorganized. It seemed like two servers were competing for our table the whole evening, as both kept coming up at various points to take orders, ask the same questions, clear the tables etc. It was apparent that one of the servers was getting pissed off by the other one. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong to be upset about someone trying to take the table you were serving, but she should have made more of an effort to conceal her apparent contempt for her co-worker. It made for plenty of awkward moments. And near the end of the evening, two in our party didn't get one of the drinks they ordered but were charged for them anyway. We split the bills three ways and each bill was incorrect on top of it all. I didn't know they had a patio out back, but it looks nice and private. I'll probably come back but hopefully the staff work out their organizational and personal issues with each other by then. read more

A great little neighborhood pub. It is quite small so you want to get there early. The food was delicious - better than what you often get for twice the price. I had the burger and others in our party had the fish, wings and butter chicken and they all said it was very good (and it all looked delicious!) The service was quick and friendly.
