It's cluttered, you'll nearly knock things off their shelves by accident, and you'll have to dig to find gems. I left here without buying anything, but if you're a hardcore antiquer who likes to rummage through a bunch of old things for the satisfaction of finding a gem, you should check out Bayside Antiques! If you're more of the gift shop type of person, check out some of the other stores instead.

He seems to do very high quality restoration work on the antique fans, lamps, and phones that he sells. The front room is like a museum. Lots of old things that work like new. A pretty 1905 lamp. A 1911 brass and cast iron desk fan that blows a lot more air than a modern fan. Piles of old switches and wall outlets. Hanging from the ceiling are some very nice looking ceiling fans from the early 1900's. The back room is the restoration shop. Chestertown Electric did a very meticulous job rewiring an old lamp that I had been afraid to use. They installed a solid brass socket that looks and feels much better than the original one that my cat broke off. It's a block off the main shopping area of High and Cross streets. The store is open at odd times. Friday evening and Saturday midday. If it's closed, ring the door bell.

My boyfriend and I have passed this place many times without stopping in. Yesterday we decided to…read morestop in and look around. Turned out to be an extremely bad experience. We really liked a cabinet the shop had in the front and decided to purchase it. We thought it was small enough to fit in the car but should have really measured it beforehand. My boyfriend went in and paid cash for the furniture since the place doesn't accept any other form of payment. When we realized the cabinet was not going to fit we put the piece back where we found it and returned inside to talk to the owner. He flat out refused to give us our money back because he stated he already recorded the sale in his books. He said he had no way of knowing if we left and switched the cabinet out with another piece in the 3 minutes we were outside. I stressed that he was fully aware we never left the store premises, but it became pretty clear quickly that he was going to make a sale even if he had to steal from us to do it. When we stated we were going to call the authorities it was only then he offered to buy the item back from us to avoid the police presence. To be a nice guy he was going to buy the item back at less than we just paid him 5 minutes earlier. He stated he needed to charge us a restocking fee for the item we put back ourselves. He then insisted he write up a receipt stating how satisfied with the arrangement we were or we would not have gotten any of our money back. I realize as a business owner you have the right to decide if you will offer a refund, and with the small post card stating "all sales are final" in the front of the counter he legally didn't have to. It is not like we left and came back 2 days later wanting our money back. The Item never left his store. After I was practically forced to sign this receipt he pulls out a wad of cash from his pocket and hands me the money he had decided to return to us. All of this while trying to tell me how long he's been in business there, as if that is some sort of justification for his crooked behavior. We will never shop or stop at this place again. It doesn't cost a dime to be a decent human being, a quality this particular business owner clearly does not possess.

We went there today for help with a locked antique bookcase. They were extremely helpful and even…read moregave us a box of keys to try to open it, when we were unsuccessful - we brought the bookcase there to leave for repair but they worked right then to get it open and finally did!! In addition they had very nice furniture finished and unfinished and were informative about all the pieces and their background and history. I'll definitely be back (and let me add they did not charge me for the repair they worked on almost an hour). Thank you !!
