Twice we saw girls look at the tour group and roll their eyes in disgust and while on tour there wasn't a single friendly hello from students walking around the campus. It's a shame because Marist has some great programs and was close enough for my son to come home once in a while. They say you can't make a second first impression and vibe from the current students we saw walking around just didn't make the place seem like the right fit. I'm 100% SURE this isn't the entire student body, but it is what it is. The search continues...

Update - it got worse. When leaving the building to go to the next part of the tour, the guide did…read morenot wait for me. I took the elevator down and they just took the group on the stairs and took off without waiting. So I had to leave. I took the issue to admissions and they had nothing to say. If you have any mobility needs don't go here. Nope! Came here for a campus visit and the guide mumbled something and then took the group off at a fast pace, to climb three (or four) flights to the lecture room. Zero access for people with disabilities. I raised with them (as it was not accessible for us) and the first question asked was "did you fill out the form for people with disabilities?" Yes we did. But that is all you got? They say in other reviews that this college is too "woke." How about not woke enough?

I've been Independence for about two or three shows so far and it's really a nice experience. Plenty of parking, the campus is beautiful the folks who organize and volunteer are really knowledgeable and are also patrons of the arts. Really cool to run into one of my former music director / teachers from my junior high school days who is very involved in this particular group.

Continuing leads to the end of the path into grass and then into woods, there is a dirt path which leads to the Hudson River, which is extremely narrow covered with plants, making it quite frustrating for those who aren't in great shape, be aware. Not a bad place to explore this area.

Every time I come up there is something new. I love seeing the fall foliage here and the bright happy spirits of all the townspeople. It is right next to the wonderful town of New Paltz with its bustling nightlife and restaurants. You get the full college experience in a couple miles. It is easy to walk around and do everything you need. It is far enough to get away from the craziness of the city but still be able to enjoy yourself.

I was accepted to four schools and chose this one, and it was absolutely the right choice. My professors are very supportive, I love my cohort, and our practicum coordinator is great. I had to take undergrad statistics there before applying to the master's program (my bachelor's is in a different subject), and my professor Glenn Geher was really helpful. This might sound hyperbolic, but it's rare in life to have something turn out even better than you hoped. I feel very lucky to be here.

Pros and cons. Our son was there for Freshman and Sophomore year and then transferred out to…read moreanother highly ranked LAC. The campus is beautiful if you're ok with winter weather. The main complaint we had is there is a pervasive opinion among professors that students shouldn't focus their attention on grades and just focus on learning. To that end, most professors didn't return completed work and in many cases didn't even grade work until the very end of the semester - so students had no feel for where they stood in terms of grades in the classes. The problem is that grades do matter - particularly for those students who are planning on attending a competitive graduate school, such as medical school or law school. This almost disdain for grades that most of the professors showed did not sit well with us at all. The reality is grades are a college student's currency. It would be like the school telling professors not to worry about what their salary is, and just to focus on teaching. It's not realistic. Also, the student body does skew toward alternative, so if your kid is a mainstream kid, they could have an issue with that.
