I would not recommend Midwest Remodel and Repair. I hired…read moreTony to repair a broken exterior door handle. He came to my house, purchased a new approximately $50 handle/lockset, and charged me $150 total for the part, pickup and installation. Rather than replacing the entire existing handle, he told me parts from the new unit could be used while keeping my existing handle. Six days later, the door handle physically came off the door. I contacted Tony immediately and asked him to come back and correct the repair. I was not asking for additional work for free--I was asking him to stand behind a repair that had failed less than a week after he performed it. He refused to return without charging me again. What really bothered me was his response when I questioned why I should have to pay another labor charge. He texted me: "I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt." He then followed that with: "I will not return for free. Steal of a deal when you get a $50 part picked up and delivered and installed for a grand total of $150." Those are his words, not mine. He set the $150 price. I agreed to it and paid him in full. I never asked him for a discount or a "steal of a deal." I simply expected that when I paid a professional to repair a door, the repair would last longer than six days--and that if it didn't, the person who performed the work would come back and address it. Maybe shame on me for not asking beforehand, "What happens if your repair breaks six days later? Do you stand behind your work?" I assumed that was understood when hiring a local small business. What makes this even more disappointing is that while he was at my house, we discussed approximately seven additional projects I wanted completed, representing at least another $500 in work. I fully intended to hire him for those projects. After seeing how this situation was handled, I will obviously be taking that work elsewhere. I can only review my own experience: I paid $150 for the repair, the handle came off six days later, and he explicitly refused to return without another charge. Future customers can decide for themselves whether "I get paid for the attempt" is the level of warranty and customer service they expect from someone working on their home.

After my first job with Mike I was super happy with him. However, I used him again and this time I…read morewas so displeased. It was not funny. We hired Mike to remove a bar and to fix the ceiling after a leak. He charged us $150 to remove the bar. He then told us that he would charge us $300 to put the bar back in place and fix the ceiling. We had told them at that time that we would be using wall paneling to repair the ceiling. We had wall paneling on the ceiling at that time in another spot. When it came time to do the repair Mike showed up on the first day but lost his keys in his car and spent the entire day trying to get his keys out of the car rather than calling a service to do it for him. So he blew the entire day. On Wednesday I don't know what time he showed up because I had an appointment but when I got home at noon he promptly left and didn't show back up and until late afternoon and only stayed for an hour. After which he had a allowed argument with his wife over speakerphone about missing Valentine's Day dinner. He then left my house and returned late afternoon the next day after I made several calls to him trying to figure out where he was after. He stated he would be there the next morning. Very little communication. This type of behavior went on for days. When the job was complete, Mike tried to charge us over $1,600 for putting the bar back in and repairing the ceiling. I might add that the ceiling portion was 3x 20 ft Wall paneling and then he had to put the bar back in spot which was in two pieces. At this point he had severely damaged many pieces of the bar and the assembly around it. He had also left pencil marks on the ceiling which for some reason he thought was acceptable. Mike is not a licensed contractor but actually a handyman. This whole ordeal spent over a course of 4 days. Something that should probably have taken place in one day. At the end my husband and I ended up completing the job ourselves because Mike didn't show up on the final day except to pick up his tools when I told him we finished the job ourselves. For the pictures you see below, he actually wanted $848. After completing the job he then told me that his price was $125 an hour and said that he had worked over 15 hours which he can't even account for because he was so spotty in showing up and not showing up and he would come and go and take off for his wife, his children or to go shopping or to eat or who knows what or are even for other clients in the middle of working for me. To me, this now meant he was changing the original price that he had given me from $300 to something more. I do not recommend this company or this person to anyone and I've included pictures of his shoddy work. I should also mention that Mike wanted to decide what materials to use in my house and when I said no he was very upset. I had to go down and explain to him that he does not get to decide what materials are used in other people's house. I told him I was using wall panels and a specific one and he said he wanted to use a certain type of product and spray paint it. When I said no he was very upset and said that his idea was a good idea and that the people buying my house would have liked his idea. I am an interior designer and I'm very good at what I do. My house sold in one week in this very bad market. Obviously I know what I'm doing. I'm also going to include a letter that Mike sent me that was extremely rude regarding his displeasure about using the materials he wanted.

Excellent. Very responsive to messages and very professional in the work completed. Definitely…read morewill seek him out again for any future projects.
