Plan was to completely tare down the interior of the existing 4 units building and to expand it up and out into a 6 units building with increased number of bedrooms and NEW EVERYTHING! The Project was started in 2019 but a whole year was lost due to a bad architect who did not do his job at all. But together we were able to push through and get the building permit from DCHA and started work in 2020. Unfortunately, soon after COVID hit and everything slowed down or completely stopped so another year was lost. By 2021, post COVID eara, prices were much higher than when we started. What I really liked about working with Sydney was that we discussed the situation and came up with a plan that was fair for both of us to get the project moving. He was open to listen when I was not happy with the situation and would correct it. Since, I live in Atlanta and the project was in DC I had an independent 3rd party company do inspection for me intermittently to make sure things were done appropriately and Sydney would get the report and would work on everything that I thought needed to be addressed. The project was long and difficult but Sydney 's honesty and integrity to stay true to his word made this project successful. As you can see the pictures posted on top, Sydney was able to finish the project beautifully and not too far from the original budget. I did not have a good experience at all with this company. First, they changed project managers on…read moreme just before they came out to do that work without explanation. When the work started, they moved at a glacier pace with erratic attendance. There were days they did not show up at all, other days they would show up unexpectedly at 7am, and leave at 10am. This was never communicated with me. Next, mistakes started happening. They painted the walls the wrong color. They put up the shower door on the wrong side. They also put up the window blind backwards so I couldn't reach or use the rod to open and close it. After the shower door went up backwards, the project manager fired the workers, but the had no one to finish the work. When they finally came back to fix the shower tiles wrecked when the door went up on the wrong side, they didn't align the replacement tile patterns with each other so the pattern is disjointed and doesn't line up at all. The project manager told me it's not supposed to line up!? After complaining about it 3 times, they finally offered to replace the tiles. But they stalled on ordering them and now it's out of stock. There are also other problems - the shower faucets are not properly secured to the shower walls, the vanity light is separating from the wall and the light switch fixture is also separating from the wall. The floor tile is irregular with grout lines sometimes thick in places, other times nonexistent. Currently, they are not returning my calls or texts. I've even reached out to the owner who came out and promised to fix everything, but commented that I was overly concerned with "small" details. Now he has not returned my calls or texts about when he will come to fix things. Maybe I am concerned with details but I'd think that is common when paying 20k to have a bathroom redone according to an approved plan. At the very least, I expected that shower tile patterns would match up and that things would be well grouted or secured in shower and on walls. This was my first renovation in my first home and I'm so disappointed in how it turned out and how I was treated by the team. Also, this 2 week project took 5 and 1/2 weeks to get to where it is now. Overall the project was done carelessly with no attention to detail and with no acceptance of their mistakes and no attempt to repair the problems identified. I see they have had good reviews in the past, but my project did not go well at all. I would definitely recommend choosing another company. When I first complained they asked me not to write a bad review and I said that along as everything was fixed we had a deal. Nothing has been fixed and they are not communicating with me. I know have to either pay another company more money to fix their mistakes or take legal action to resolve the simple issues that could be easily fixed. If detail and having a project done to your liking is important I would not recommend H&C at all.

The guy who showed up cut corners by only moving the knob a few notches so the hot water that was leaking would not turn on at all. He called it a fix and charged me $136.50 for this. What a joke. I ended up doing it myself after those scumbags. Went to Lowes, picked up a new faucet cartrage for $50 and replaced it myself. I will never ever call this joke of a so called handyman service again as long as I live. They think they can screw you and get away with it. They can do it only once to me.

However, Mike said it would be $350 for one gate (hinges & handle) plus an additional $50 for handle on a second gate. Ok, fair enough. But when the worker finished a few days later, he said the handle on the first gate didn't actually need to be replaced, since now that the hinges held the door up, the handle was actually aligned. I asked him what the price would be now and he didn't have an answer - he wasn't the "invoice guy." So he W-D40'd and we called it a day. He gave me the materials for the handle in case we changed our minds and wanted it fixed later. Unfortunately I did not get his name. Then I got the bill. The second handle was not taken off. I told Mike (the "invoice guy") so and then he called me back, saying the $350 was for the first gate, regardless of whether or not the handle was replaced, and still $50 for the second gate. But hinges + 1 handle = $350, plus 1 additional handle = $400 total - therefore shouldn't the second handle NOT be counted. Of course the bill was not itemized. I am not using this company again.
