Incredibly helpful place - I came in looking for extra-wide shelves for my closet, which I couldn't find at local hardware shops (shelves greater than 12" in width are surprisingly hard to come by). The staff here couldn't be more helpful - much more efficient, pleasant, patient, caring and knowledgeable than dealing with some of the big box home maintenance shops which have sprung up near the Gowanus. And they offered me a creative solution whereby I (a) got the shelves sized as I wanted and (b) paid less than I expected/had been quoted elsewhere. In fact, the one downside was in fact a direct outgrowth of their efficiency - I hadn't been expecting to walk out with anything, and wound up having to schlepp some (relatively) heavy wood to a couple of other stops before heading home. It's mostly a warehouse, but there is a nice little customer shop on the side with basic hardware items (screwdrivers, glue) and some custom-order shelving/floor options. Not much here beyond that, obviously, and definitely a bit off the beaten path if you don't have wheels, but in the final analysis, I'm pleasantly surprised I came out of my way to Dykes for my wood needs. read more

I've been purchasing wood and getting advice from Dyke's Lumber for over 20 years. Molding, windows, screen doors, lattice, lumber of all kinds, you name it, Dyke's has it. When I've bought in bulk, Dyke's has delivered the order on time and in good shape. What I appreciate most, though, is the sheer patience and niceness the staff show to this much older, math-challenged customer who tackles woody projects around the house and garden, including repairing the picket fence, herself, but sometimes has a hard time figuring out exactly what's needed for the job. They've never steered me wrong. Craftsmen and professional contractors use Dyke's, but so do we homeowners who rely on Dyke's expertise. read more

Great experience. I'm a fairly amateur DIYer (read: if can't be done with a power drill and a jigsaw, it's not going to happen) and usually stick to Home Depot or Lowes, but this time couldn't find the wood I needed or get the cuts I wanted. Dykes met both needs without a blink. It will definitely be my first stop for wood from now on (as long as it's before 4 pm). Regarding wait time, based on my two visits so far, once (during lunch) the wait was a bit long, maybe 15 minutes, but the trade off is when it's your turn, employees take the time to listen to what you need and make sure you get it. As far as any issues being a woman, I definitely had none. I often get a little hesitation at hardware/construction stores from people not sure if I know what I'm doing (answer: sort of yes sort of no), but it's usually accompanied by a pretty friendly willingness to evaluate and adjust to my level. read more

Definitely not a polished customer experience. I go there often (home woodworker and DIY). This is one of those places that you accept for what it is, or don't. In reading the good and the bad, I can see all those things happening. I've been going to this particular yard for about ten years, and yes, the guys behind the counter do often seem to be engaged in some mystical wandering about: maybe there are good reasons, maybe not--it is what it is. That said, everyone there seems knowledgeable. They have good selection of lumber and getting it cut is easy. They don't take cut orders over the phone (unless you have an account), which sucks. This is where I go for molding and basic lumber: poplar, pine/fir, oak, maple, some cherry and walnut. For fancy woods: Rosenzweig Lumber. For those that like Festool: they have a decent selection. read more

In my experience, generally the staff is helpful and friendly but occasionally I've gotten someone who seems a bit bothered by my questions and order processing. We worked with Bill in the cabinet department. He was beyond awful! He literally does not know how to measure or lay out a kitchen. He sold us on his layout and measurements, to then figure out once being installed, everything (i mean everything) was incorrect. Now our expensive kitchen has to have fillers everywhere to make up for his lack of ability. When we asked to speak with a manager, the manager told us there is nothing he can do. There was a long wait to get to a salesperson, but it was worth it to get my questions answered by someone knowledgeable, unlike the big box stores nearby. If they walked into my establishment I'd help them without question or without poking fun at their lack of vocabulary in my field of expertise. Looking for a friendly lumber store? Go elsewhere. Our contractor sent us here to pick up moldings for a Brownstone renovation. Unless you are a big account and know exactly what you are looking for, skip this place. Any other lumber yard in Brooklyn would be better. Also, crazy expensive delivery charges. Dykes Lumber is a real asset for anyone involved in a home renovation. Went there two weeks ago and Leo and staff were very helpful in moving my latest project along (a pocket door and door casing). Renovating older homes is new terrain for me - I've worked on modern homes but never one that's more than 100 years old. Working on an older home presents many issues I've never dealt with before, such as outdated electric, fixtures, plaster, unusual millwork etc. Trying to match the old materials with the new felt almost impossible but the vast selection at Dykes has been very helpful. After a lot of searching, I ended up choosing the 235 poplar casing for the building. While I was placing my order, a contractor came in and ordered the same item (architect said it's frequently used, in case you're looking for ideas, 235 is a good place to begin). I also looked at the 245 but it lacked depth. The 312 was very nice (I used it for one of the windows) but we all felt it was a bit "too much" for the doors. Also great - They're excellent at providing any samples you might need. Dykes has its own parking lot located conveniently across the street. They carry Marvin windows (the salesman is helpful and knowledgable) The windows section is on the second floor. Not so great - Had to go to the store to order doors & other items - they do not take individual retail orders over the phone. Would be nice if they had an online ordering system like Home Depot, Lowes etc. read more

Customer service fail! As I've slowly renovated my BK brownstone, I've visited the Dykes Gowanus location dozens of times for their huge selection of millwork (baseboards, pilasters, door casing, crown molding, etc), and every time I get the attitude - curt, condescending, impatient, etc. I'm a pretty handy guy, and show up prepared with my measurements, knowledge of what I want, etc, and always its the same crapass service. Not looking for a handjob here, just don't be a jerk. I think these guys like to only deal with the trade, as I've seen the same guy give the contractor in front of me great service - if so, stop offering retail service, otherwise offer some actual service with a smile! By far, the worst customer service I have ever experienced, both over the phone and in person. The guy I dealt with in store would not even look up to make eye contact. He was extremely rude, disrespectful, and outwardly nasty without any provocation whatsoever. Not only did he provide zero value to me, but I left angry that I had wasted any time there. To make matters worse, the quote he provided was 75% higher than Kuiken Brothers for the exact same product, and Kuiken's customer service is exemplary. Unless you're a contractor that enjoys being sucked up to, run fast from this place! If you're not a contractor, they make it very clear that they don't want your business. read more

Their customer service really needs to be worked on. There is no acknowledgement of your presence in the store until they're done messing around behind the counter, turn around, walk to their little printers, take out a sheet of paper, walk back to their computers, scribble something, and finally they say next. I've never walked in and spent less than 10 minutes waiting on them, meanwhile a minimum of 5-7 people are back there. I wasn't going to leave a review but something else just happened. I just tried called 4 of their locations. 4! Not one of them picked up. There are multiple numbers and not one of them were picked up. Guys, what are you doing, you're loosing money?! read more

as a woman buying lumber/hardware and construction materials im always a bit nauseaus when i have to deal with these situations....i ordered 2 18 ft IPE 2x4! my husband picked them up but when he got home we noticed a big gash in one. we immedialty braced for the worst...but i called Mike, the salesperson who had the pieces ordered form the warehosue and told him the situation...and RIGHT away he said no problem we will replace it!! amazing!!! i asked the next day how much delivery would be and he said no problem they will come deliver the wood and pick up the damaged piece at no charge! so i have to say i am a fan for life! really impressed with these guys!! and especially mike mcdonald at the 6th st location read more

The customer service here just sucks. The lines get 5 and 6 people deep and the guys at the desk barely look up. I'm sure they're busy with orders but their system of dealing with customers is just terrible. I'm doing a lot of work in the neighborhood and I've walked out of Dykes three or four times after spending 15 minutes in a line that doesn't move. I'd love to patronize this local business but it's not clear they actually want my money. Their stock appears to be decent but it's hard to know exactly what they have when there's no one to ask. Tip for management: send someone in to figure out how to run this yard the right way. Luckily there is another hardwood and plywood supplier a block away. read more

They have pretty decent stock, but be very careful about promised ship dates for additional material, especially if it isn't in stock locally. I learned the hard way after purchasing 700 lf of grooved ipe delivered 3 days later, right on time. Went back for another 100', was told to wait 3 days. 3 days later, I was told to wait 5 days. Thank God the client witnessed it. All with a " We don't really need your business anyway" attitude, you know, the same one you get from a local bike shop when you go to buy new tires, and not a new Pinarello Dogma. From a pro perspective, I'd say Dykes is best used as a last resort, for particular wood in a pinch. I wouldn't use them for my bulk orders. There are other suppliers for high end deck woods. I'm sure the owners will wind up closing shop soon after selling the property for a huge profit. Unfortunately, real estate there is insane. read more

I really wasn't sure how many stars to give as I am still baffled by my experience. It started very well as I was making a purchase of windows and doors. After a promised time the items were delivered, but one window arrived with a crack and one door had damage in the wood that ran deep. The Dykes rep came over right away, placed a replacement order for the sash and suggested I have the door replaced too. That was at the end of January. The replacement door was supposed to arrive in 3-4 weeks (Feb). In early March the rep became more difficult to get on the phone or answer emails, and to my "any news on the door?" he kept responding "I will look into it". He stopped answering or returning my calls and emails, and in the beginning of April it emerged that he NEVER put in a claim for the replacement door with the manufacturer. And so I now have to wait another 3-4 weeks for the door. Dykes is not a bad place, they have knowledgeable staff and decent merchandise, but I will not be placing any orders with them. I may not be a big client, but I do have to replace 10 more custom windows and I'll be sure to take my business elsewhere. PS. I sent a friend to price windows and doors for his brownstone to them, the rep took all the information and never got back to him. I can only guess that they don't really need the business. read more
