We found Sawkill while looking for reclaimed barnwood for our renovated kitchen. We visited the…read moresmall showroom in Bklyn and Alan told us all about the wood and showed us samples. We ordered the reclaimed oak planks in various widths, skip-planed, which he explained would allow some smoothness and some of the rough distressing. It took a couple of months for them to source the wood and deliver it to us in LI, but it arrived as promised. Our contractor installed it and my husband and I sanded and finished it using Waterlox Trutone natural sealer and finish. You don't have to sand it, but we wanted it a little lighter after testing the finish. We decided to fill in holes with epoxy, but in hindsight didn't need to, and it was a lot of work to sand it smooth. Otherwise it was pretty easy. We LOVE LOVE LOVE our floors! The wood is gorgeous and so unique. Alan knows all about reclaimed wood and even wrote a book about it, which we bought. He kept in touch, answered all our questions and helped us with advice on finishing. Highly recommend Sawkill and Alan!

My daughter and I engaged John of Grand Kitchen Design to help design and supply the cabinets for a…read morekitchen renovation of her apartment. We had a couple of false starts on the first appointment, bur from that point on, John was incredibly responsive, professional and clear in communications with us. We must have had him develop and tweak the drawings 8+ times before we arrived at the final drawings. He personally came to the site to measure a few times. GKD only supplies stock cabinetry - nothing custom. Their warehouse is in New Jersey. As a result, the cabinets were delivered to us 7 days after we approved the final drawings; as promised and in good condition. One back panel was in the wrong material; the correct panel was delivered the next day. We also needed to modify and order other panels, and John was very accommodating and helpful in arranging that immediately. Other cabinet suppliers we talked to seemed to specialize in expensive custom cabinetry, which we felt was unnecessary for our needs, and the timeframe for delivery was 6 to 8 weeks (from Europe). Heaven knows what would happened if one piece was damaged or incorrect - it could protract the cabinet work by months. Speaking of costs, GKD was very affordable - again, a consideration that mattered greatly to us. The quality of the cabinets was very good, including the soft close features of the drawer and doors. The range of cabinet designs and materials was also very good. We felt we got excellent value for our money, but more than anything else, we got wonderful, personalized service from John. On other occasions, I've gone to different hardware stores for the same reason. I had needed keys made and unfortunately, when I arrived home and tried the keys, they didn't work. Next time I need keys or hardware goods, I will come back to Park Slope Hardware & Locksmith.

When the person came for installation, the top lock seemed to stick somewhat badly, making it difficult to turn and lock/unlock, whereas the original lock had aligned quite well. He asked me for some WD-40, which I fortunately had, and applied that and insisted it'd be fine within a day or so. After several days...it still wasn't. I had paid cash per request and was a bit nervous, but was ultimately able to get them back out to adjust the lock so that it closed properly a few days later. The repair/reinstallation didn't take much time, and left me wondering a bit why it couldn't have been done properly the first time, but hey, ultimately they fixed it and it works fine now, so really no harm.
