Grill outside came in handy when power went out for a couple of hours. Nice mud room for keeping the mosquitos out during the summer and keeping snow/ ice outside of house. Interior is a no shoes home. Complete with washer/dryer and extra freezer for fish storage. The creek is viewable from your campsite. Please DO NOT rent a pontoon boat unless you are an extremely competent rower and or have a guide with you. Me and my three buddies rented a four person pontoon boat and nearly drowned as we encountered a "sweeper" (tree that has fallen and is just above the water surface, making going over it in the boat impossible. (Google "drowning in Alaska by sweeper or strainer trees"). Our boat wedged up against the tree and the current was strong and wanted to capsize our boat but did not and ultimately, after what seemed like several frantic minutes where one of us was pinned on our back and having his face smashed by a stout branch, and another was in the water and having his waders fill up with water and having to struggle to stay above the surface of the water by holding onto tree branches with all his might, we were pushed under the tree and branches with some scrapes and broken fly rods. Three of the four of us believed we were going to drown. If you want to fish this creek, just do so from the bank.

I came for a retreat and it was a nice time. Food was made by camp hands and there was even a camp cat named Heidi. There were paddleboats and canoes available. A friend of mine rented the cabins and space and had her wedding here. It's a very beautiful area and only an hour and a half from town.

We went on a summer day - actually during a heat wave!…read more Vern the owner came out and greeted us and welcomed us into his cool garage converted lecture / teaching room. They had cool refreshments and snacks for us as well ! Since the day would be hot and Vern did not want to stress the dogs, he took us on the dog pull in his 4 wheel ATV which was a blast. The dogs loved to pull and pull - so much that the brakes on the ATV wore out. The dogs used the same voice commands as the Denali dog sled tour. Ha and Gi were the commands used in common. We went into the forest thru mud holes, water puddles, and very rough terrain which the dogs loved. Ironically, it was hotter in Alaska than Los Angeles by 15 degrees at the same time! It was so warm that all the mosquitos hatched and came out to attack. The Iditarod sled dogs don't seem to be bothered by them though. After we returned, Vern did his lecture on how an Iditarod team is built, planned, and executed. We learned quite a lot to be a competitor in a very grueling contest!

Martin owns the kennel and has completed 39 Iditarod races. The other staff that engaged with us also have completed a few each! The whole experience was educational but also extremely engaging. We got to watch a demo of how the dogs pull the sled, play with the dogs and puppies, and see examples of how they prepped themselves and their dogs for the Iditarod. Martin and Sue told us stories of when they were preparing for and doing the Iditarod. I think we stayed a lot longer than our schedule had allotted, and that was ok by us! Happy Trails does such a great job engaging with their guests--definitely put this on your list of things to do in the area!
