Lots of area to relax and enjoy nature. This campground and surrounding area are in the heart of no man's land . Cell phone use is spotty. In fact in some places no service for most of the time. We are unplugging. Make sure and bring a paper map. Have an image somewhere saved of the camp site. Save your directions to your photos too. For easy reference later. No cell service again. The beauty of this place is "off grid," for us. It's enjoyable and quiet. The individuals leave nature as they found her. Bring what you need and relax remember.

There were other campers around us in the H loop, but a lot of empty sites as well. I'm sure as it warms up, it gets much busier. To reach Zilpo Campground, you drive pretty deep into the woods. It's a gorgeous, windy drive where you start to see Cave Run Lake through the trees. The campground itself is massive. There is a lot of signage to reach your camp site. H Loop was well-maintained. We had a site that easily fit two tents and our cars. There was a fire pit and a large picnic table. We had a trail down to the water. There were plenty of dumpsters around to dispose of trash. The bathhouse was clean - water was just pretty chilly! We hiked a trail closer to the D sites and checked out the beach area. On a warmer weekend, that beach area would've been calling our names.

Convenient rest stop when we needed to get out and stretch our legs. It was wet outside although…read morethe rain had stopped but there was good signage warning the floor is slippery when wet. There was a large mat upon entry into the building and a worker that greeted us to warn of the need to be careful. The ladies restroom was exceptionally clean and had a convenient handicap accessible stall. My husband reported that the men's restroom was also clean. After using the facilities we found a rack with informational brochures that were of interest. Access back onto the Interstate was easy and we proceeded with our trip.

They told us it would take us a couple hours but we had a speedy grandson with us and I think we were back in an hour and 20 minutes. As tent campers, realizing we are in the minority versus the colossal RVs and fifth wheels that are…read morevying for spots in campgrounds, we wanted to love this campground. The host and his family were really great, the historic location is cool, and the park itself is great as well. Unfortunately, we had a less than stellar experience, though not any fault of the hosts. First off, this campground is located about 50 feet off of a major highway where cars are traveling between 50 and 75 mph. Our bad for not knowing this. We're not from 'round these parts. Second, the park facilities have some weird operating schedule where much of it - besides the campground which is open every day in season - is shut down from Sunday through Wednesday morning. The restaurant and museum also have weird operating hours. This means that the lodge, which looked really cool, and the cabins, are inaccessible unless you show up Wednesday through Saturday evenings. An additional problem with the part-time operating schedule is that the entrance station is not manned at all Sunday through Wednesday morning, which means anybody who wants can drive into the campground and tour it at their leisure security. This happened frequently during our stay, and almost all of the vehicles were super loud motos or trucks. Besides the unneeded noise, this gives the feeling of reduced security. We ended up renting a site with hook ups because we wanted to be out of the woods and have a flat site. Unfortunately, whoever stayed at the site before us must've chain smoked three packs a day because there were cig butts all over the ground of our entire site. A second odd thing happened to us at the campground, where the RVers two sites down parked their monster truck in the site next to theirs so that no one could use it (but seemingly didn't pay for the site). We didnt push the issue but it seemed like a pretty lame move when we were clearly looking for sites on a Sunday afternoon that were flat and had some shade so we could put up our tent. Note that we did not go into the lodge or cabins because they were closed (Sunday night). They do look nice and are far removed from the highway. Summary: if you want peace and quiet of any kind, this is definitely NOT the place to be. If you're looking for a place to crash for the night that is close to the highway, it'll do. There's probably quieter campgrounds out there. If you have the cash and you're camping Wednesday through Sat nights, might be worth checking out the lodge or cabins for a nicer experience that's much farther from the highway and feels remote. There is a playground and on-site laundry, which is a plus if you're looking for those items. We visited on a Sunday in June. YMMV.

What I liked: I have to state that it feels like one of those themed hotels. This time, instead of a school house, it actually does remind me of a house. The front door of my room has a knob and a top lock, like a house door would. The place could be defined as quaint (cue Ed Helm in The Hangover telling his wife that he is staying with his friends at a quaint hotel for the bachelor party...good movie). The amenities they have are interesting. They have a coffee machine in the room that can load up to 40+ ounces of liquid in the back of it and make 3 full 10z cups of coffee before it has to be refilled above the minimum line. There is a DEHUMIDIFIER. I do not think I have ever seen one in my life. I always used to have a humidifier, but never a DE... The room comes with a microwave and fridge which is always good. The television has A TON of channels, even adult ones (which one has to order on demand if you are into that stuff) and music channels (think Spectrum, highest tier cable). Inconsistences: I found that one bulb on one of the lamps, near the microwave and fridge does not work. The button seems to be broken as well. I am assuming the one by the bed turns left and one can hear it click to turn the lamp on, but this one can just be turned without any kind of resistance. There is a limited amount of free outlets in the room. The fridge and microwave take up one. The coffee maker and the nonworking lamp take another, under the table. The switches to the various parts of the room and the bathroom are in unconventional places. For instance, if I want to go to the sink area, I would think the light switch would be near the sink. It is actually on the wall before entering the sink area. This is the same thing in the bathroom. I would think it would be on the inside wall, but it is on the outside. There is no center light in the bed portion of the room, one only has the two lamps serving each bed side (somehow I ended up with two queens, then again I am not paying for the room...lol). Overall, I think this hotel, though seemingly unheard of because it is in the middle of nowhere, is pretty competitive with other hotels. They offer complimentary breakfast beating out IHG, Marriot, Wyndham, and Hilton chains. Edit: I found out the morning after I had arrived that the breakfast is only dried foods (cereals, doughnuts, honeybuns). Nothing is hot. Still, better than hotels that make you pay or do not offer anything. Not a bad experience, just unique. I think they also barbecue for guests during lunch by the amount of grills I see and they even have a food truck! Feel bad I could not be there for that since I am just staying for the night.

This is a perfectly serene and picturesque setting with comfortable accommodations. We absolutely love this place! The owners are gracious and lovely hosts. I give this a perfect 10!
