They give you printed step by step instructions to follow and all of the supplies. Someone is always there if you need help. They do loaded brush night where you can bring food and alcohol and paint a predetermined painting all led by an instructor. They have mixed media projects which are really fun. There is a gallery upstairs of local artist work and is great to browse during class breaks. The owners, Tabatha and Therese, are amazing and very passionate. My moms group does private parties frequently and have taken classes with both instructors. Both are awesome, patient and wonderful at teaching people like me with no experience at all. I have done loaded brush night and mixed media. Can't wait to try open studio. One huge tip- Public calendars come out every month on the 8th for the following month. Most sell out fast as space is limited. I have an alarm set every 8th to remind me to look at the studio calendar! Can't wait for my class next week!

The class was small so there was more individual attention to our art, along with personal and great conversation with the owner/artist/instructor. She offers a variety of classes in different mediums so there is something for everyone. And if you have had limited art classes as I have, coming here with personalized instruction is perfect. While doing the Groundhog Day walking tour, we decided to check out the Old Courthouse/current Arts Center just for the hell of it. I'm not really into art unless it involves renderings of cute animals or my favorite celebrities (I wouldn't mind a nice over-the-fireplace portrait of Bill Murray or Bernie Mac or David Letterman), but for the most part, when I hear people talk about art I just have to drift off to another place to keep myself from rolling my eyes at the pretension, but here, I didn't get that... at all. We walked around and were shocked with the collection of works here as well as the quality and lessn't we forget price. They had handmade unique pottery that was unlike any pottery I'd ever seen before and pretty much priced for a limited budget person such as myself. There were many rooms to roam though, leading in a circle around the main room with register and beautiful older ladies with long, stringy grey hair - exactly the way you'd picture older, artsy, free-spirited women. In the second to last room in the round-about gallery, I found something that basically stopped me in my tracks. It was titled 'Fortune Teler' and it was a relatively giant framed canvas, full of color, it had hanging beads, mini-lightbulbs, little sequins set into the partial gold-filigree'd frame with a the work itself being completely covered in bright but shadowy colors that had an orange/yellow-haired boy flipping over two unreadable tarot cards for a big, green cat and a magenta rhino (that at first I admittedly though was an aardvark - my favorite animal next to manatees). I couldn't be torn away from it. And it was only (and normally I would've shit my pants over this price) $150. I took a pics of it, spent another 4-hours with it on my mind while we walked the town and went back 15 minutes before close to seal the sale. The woman said she was sad to see that painting go but could tell from looking at me that we were a right match, which may have all been pillow-talk, but it really does feel like it was made for me. I do wish they'd had a bit more information on the artist and painting but, it was right on the dot when they were closing and they were able to take down my info so hoping I'll hear back, and if not, I'm fine with just having the painting, too.

The historic building holds several rooms with assorted paintings and sculptures from local and national artists. Some are landscape paintings while others are strange mobiles made of wood. One display was a large photo of a naked obese woman laying on a pile of books, along with an actual pile of books below the photo! It was kind of cool walking around and seeing some of the local talent, plus some part of the building itself (we found a heavy metal door that said "McHenry County Records" from the 19th century. If you're around, drop in for a few moments. You'll be entertained.

They sponsor numerous open juried exhibits for area artists to enter each year. The art gallery is used for art shows, recitals, receptions, or any event that is deemed special. In 2003-2004 this vintage 1854 building underwent complete restoration recreating the 1898 facade look and retaining the original wood floors, tin ceilings, and internal structures where possible. In the beginning of 2005, The Next Picture Show Fine Arts Center became a 501 (3c) non-profit organization. The Art Study, on the lower level, is used for art workshops and classes, student art exhibitions, and meetings of the art community.

We contact Tonya Hardy and she had a class coming up so we jumped right in. My granddaughter had thrown a few pots in a high school art class but the instructions were just a you tube video. Tonya was a great teacher and worked with both of us, encouraging us to push the envelope. My husband and I attended a hand building ornament workshop with Jess who was so encouraging and even had my hesitant husband enjoying the experience and happy with his work! I've now been a member since May. Tom, the owner, has been helping throughout all of these different experiences. I have never met someone who cares so much about trying to reach people where they are and help them achieve anything they are willing to work to learn. All the while he works so hard and is successful at creating a welcoming, supportive, and collaborative community of artists. In the beginning I was nervous that I wouldn't fit into the environment... boy was I wrong. Tom makes such an effort to greet everyone by name and introduce new students and members to everyone. This fosters an atmosphere where people inspire, brainstorm and share different tips and techniques they have learned with each other freely. I cannot recommend enough taking a class at Three Ravens - you won't regret anything but not doing it sooner!
