Brian Earthman - I first met him 15 years ago in Georgetown TX. At the time, Brian served as 'yes man' doctor for The Arbor, which was/is a "Treatment Center" located in Georgetown. All of these places operate on a Shamed Based AA System - Founded, by David Elliott and Burning Tree. I do not agree with the negative, unfair comments about Dr Earthman and his staff. I have been seeing Dr. Earthman for years and he has always been kind, caring and thoughtful. He listens to me and I don't ever feel rushed. He has regulated my medications and helped me through some extremely difficult times. I've been going to Dr Earthman for almost 2 years now and haven't had any of the issues that are mentioned in the previous reviews. His staff are friendly and we're able to confirm benefits and fees without any issues. I never felt like he rushed me, however he does like you to answer his direct questions, if you tend to go off and ramble (like I do), he will interrupt to get you back in track. Keep in mind he is a Psychiatrist not a Psychologist, which means he's not the guy who you talk to for an hour about your problems. But he will provide you with a list of therapists if needed. He has continued with drug maintenance and made adjustments as needed. He's a little quirky and not very personable, but he is very nice. He has a seriousness about him (not arrogant as others described him). He has been very helpful for continued treatment. read more

I really wish I would have checked Yelp before contacting this practice because I have experienced many of the same issues. I scheduled my appointment, set up my patient portal and then called, as I was asked to do, to verify that everything was good to go. I ended up calling and leaving three messages three weeks in a row. I didn't hear back until the night before my 9am appointment when they informed me that I needed to fill out paperwork or my appointment would be rescheduled and I would have to pay the cancellation fee. They never did end up calling me to reschedule and I'm assuming that it's because I hadn't signed the paperwork agreeing to their absurd cancelation policy. There is no reason to give this practice a chance. I can't speak on the Dr. himself but just trying to work with their receptionists raised a ton of red flags that were confirmed when I read other reviews. read more

Would not recommend. He took me off all of my original meds and waited two weeks to put me on new ones. During the middle of the two weeks, I told him I wasn't able to handle no meds for two weeks because I was a sahm of two children and I was way too depressed. He told me to go inpatient. I went inpatient and did partial hospitalization after as he said, getting on the correct meds. Once I went back to him, he refused to prescribe me the meds the hospital gave me, seemingly forgetting that he told me to go there, and now I am left without the medication needed to keep me stable. No sense of humor, very weird flatness about him. This last visit he had the attitude that I was an addict when I have never abused anything in my life. I really should have listened to these reviews. Stay away. Trust these reviews. read more

Dr. Earthman is a terrible doctor and should be avoided. Went for my initial consultation costing $375 and resulted in only a 10min review of my medical history. He did not ask any questions about my condition or want to listen to anything I said. He refused to prescribe me what I was currently taking from my old doctor and is leaving me with a dangerous lapse in my medication schedule. He did not want to listen to me and seemed disinterested. See all these negative reviews? There's a reason for that - he is interested in one thing and one thing only: your money. If you do decide to book an appointment with him, go to his website first and read over his office policies. One of them specifically states that he charges $75 to fill out FMLA paperwork. The first (psych eval - $350) visit went fine, I wasn't terribly impressed as he was not through and barely asked me about my medical history. We finished up in about 20 minutes and he sent me out the door with a new prescription. The second visit, I brought him my 4-page FMLA paperwork and asked him if we could fill it out together during the session ($150), so I wouldn't have to pay the additional $75 just for 10 minutes of paperwork. He was staunchly opposed and would not budge, making statements like "the policy is the policy", "I went to medical school", "I charge $500 per hour for contract work"....the list goes on. I continued to gently press him regarding the $75 fee and he continued to get more and more flustered and agitated, finally culminating with "if you don't like the way I run my business, I'll happily refund you the 150 'bucks' and you can see someone else". After he said this several times, I started to get the message - if I wasn't willing to pay his ridiculous fee, then he didn't want my business. So I left...walked out of the appointment early. I tried to call him later to file a complaint but he just had more lame excuses and said he had a "very important phone call" and couldn't speak with me further. The man is a complete buffoon and awfully predatory for someone who claims to be a mental health professional. I highly HIGHLY recommend seeking other psychiatrists. I've had the pleasure of working with Dr. Earthman for almost a year until I needed to switch providers due to an insurance change. It was an extremely difficult decision and I even considered paying out of pocket just to stay with him. I've seen some troubling reviews, but most of them seem very situational and based on misunderstandings (The receptionist stays busy but is extremely polite and helpful). Still, the point of this is to discuss Dr. Earthman's quality of care which is superb. He treated my girlfriend at the time, for a very difficult and sensitive set of mood disorders. He was very frank, decisive, and methodical, but also appropriately compassionate. He's a true expert and he did a great job of outlining our potential options for treatment. We felt in control, we were trusted to let him know if we wanted to go a different direction, and he would let us know if he felt strongly one way or the other. The first experience was when this guy tried to pull me off my functional meds. Do not waste your time. This is so far the worst provider I've ever met. I saw him once; I won't be returning. He seems to have no emotions at all. I couldn't help but wonder if he was self-prescribing. It was weird and unsettling to talk to him. I described an issue I'd experienced in the past, and he said, "that sounds like you may have been on cocaine, were you?" Are you kidding me? Dr.Brian Earthman is the worst Psychiatrist I've ever met. He has no consideration for his patients feelings and is condescending and rude. He left me crying and told me I'm not his problem anymore. Once you pay him he is done with you. He didn't take into account my personal feelings and how fragile I was mentally and instead got angry with me and left me feeling horrible. I had a breakdown because of him. He left me like that when I've been more depressed than ever. If you want a Psychiatrist who has a huge ego and only cares about the money and doesn't take into regard the fragility of his patients then congratulations, you've found your man. I had one appointment with Dr. Earthman in December of 2011. If you are in need of psychiatric care in the Austin area, I cannot urge you strongly enough to look elsewhere. In my initial appointment with Dr. Earthman, whose office is located in the literal Middle of Nowhere, I found him a diagnosis-happy (went in with two diagnoses, left with five!) cold fish who was much too eager for me to blow a bunch of money on neuropsychiatric testing ($95 minimum, and I'm insured) and gadgets and gizmos he's into that cost hundreds of dollars. I'm a paycheck-to-paycheck kind of gal, and I've been on the antidepressant hamster wheel for fifteen years; I know what I have, I know how to treat it - don't go giving me the run-around, just give me the freakin' pills. He gave me two months' worth and asked me to come back for a recheck after that. Life happened, so two months turned into three. It took four phone calls to his extraordinarily incompetent office staff before I grudgingly got a one-month extension on my prescription, which NO ONE ever called to tell me was done - my pharmacy finally called to ask if I was ever going to come get my meds. When I tried to go for my recheck, I knew I'd be driving from South Austin to Cedar Park, so I took time off work and left more than an hour early to ensure enough time. Google Maps is wrong - way wrong - on how to get here, so I got lost. (I never venture above the River in normal circumstances; Cedar Park is a mystery to me.) I tried to call for directions. I got ten rings and a voicemail message THREE TIMES before his receptionist finally picked up on the fourth call. It started pouring rain, and I made (I guess?) a wrong turn. I tried to call to tell them I'd be late. Eleven times. ELEVEN. No one picked up the phone ELEVEN TIMES. I'm glad I was just lost and not suicidal or homicidal. When I expressed my dismay at this, his receptionist started berating me. "Ma'am, I had patients in front of me at the window, and Dr. Earthman was on the phone; I had to attend to them! We can't pick up the phone every time!" Which begs the questions: (a) It's 2012 and a medical office doesn't have a two-line telephone?; (b) is there really such insufficient staffing that one person cannot attend to the phone lines while another checks people in and out?; (c) isn't "picking up the phone every time!" a receptionist's job description?; and (d) no, seriously, what DO you do when a suicidal patient calls and can't get through? Dr. Earthman then has the audacity to charge me a no-show fee, when I had been trying to get through to explain to his office I was late for more than thirty minutes. Anything for an extra buck, amirite? His receptionist then informs me I have an outstanding balance. Really, I say; that's interesting, as my one and only visit with him was three months ago and I never got a bill. She says she's just now doing the billing. From December, I ask? Yep. I have worked in the medical field my entire adult life. These things do not work the way she thinks they work. Dr. Earthman's office is grossly understaffed by thoroughly incompetent people (or possibly a thoroughly incompetent person, as I can't say with certainty that there's more than one running the show), and while this level of incompetence would be horrifying in any speciality of medicine, I find it particularly disturbing in a psychiatric facility. You do not screw around with the mentally ill like that. This is NOT RIGHT, and Dr. Earthman is simply not a quality enough psychiatrist for anyone to put up with this. If you are in need of mental health services, there are excellent resources and people to help you in this area. This office is not on the list. read more

**AVOID AT ALL COSTS** I made an appointment to see Dr. Earthman about 3-4 weeks ahead of time. Many red flags started popping up before I even saw the doctor. After filling out the new patient inquiry form on their website, I received a call a few days later. They left me a voicemail and I called them back within the hour. After following the phone prompts to get the person who left me the message (naturally), I recall someone clearly picking up the phone and then hanging up. This happened about 5-6 times. No hello, no voicemail, nothing. Red flag #1. Second red flag with them was that they needed my debit card information to hold an appointment, which I made the mistake of giving them. Many legitimate medical providers do not take your payment information (insurance info, sure, I get that...gotta check coverage and stuff) before sharing with you and getting you to sign a paper stating that you agree to abide by it. Payment information shouldn't be taken until the agreed-upon service is rendered. Now for red flag #3. A few days before my appointment, I decided to call and ask exactly how much my appointment was going to cost me. I left a message with instructions to call me back with this information. This was never done. When I asked the receptionist about this when in the office, she hesitated and said something along the lines of, "Uh, yeah, the doctor and I have been having some problems with that." Didn't even look at me when saying this. After reading previous reviews, I don't believe that receptionist one bit. They are fully staffed with 4 full time people in the office, unlike many comparable offices that just have answering services or voicemail. They dropped the ball big time and wouldn't even own the issue or apologize for not getting back to me. Now for red flag #4, actually talking to the doctor. I voiced my concerns, politely and courteously, about the price to the front office staff and how I was never made aware of the price and that my calls about the price were never returned. His exact words to me were, "It's not our responsibility to return patients' phone calls." I'm pretty sure if you didn't have patients, there would not be a practice! He went on to say, "It's the patient's responsibility to call the insurance to check on price." Your office, sir, should be well capable of disclosing the prices, since after all, you established them. The below reviewers' statements about the poor customer service is spot on, and I wish I had come to this page before contacting this practice. There are places you want to hang around and chat with the staff after your appointment, or even before because they are so nice and chill and you have something in common with.... this is not one of those places. I understand the staff's job is to schedule you, not to be friendly, but the SOLE reason I did not make an appointment for my brother with this doctor is that his receptionist is a jerk. He was having a tiny bit of an emergency when his old Dr. suddenly retired and went belly up on a lawn chair in Maui, so I told him not to stress and I would call around and get him someone very quickly before his meds ran out. Not having a shrink of my own, I couldn't refer him at all, so I needed to go based on his insurance list. I did just that, and left a message for Dr. Earthman and sent in the electronic form on his site. Meanwhile, A LONG MANY DAYS LATER (after I'd already chosen another dr for little bro) I get a call from someone representing his office. This woman... I'll tell you what, she needs a little retirement herself because trivializing suicide attempts is, at the very least, rude. She's like. "Did he actually try to commit suicide or did he just take some pills?" What's the difference, dudette? Let's not be suicide hipsters, just because everyone is taking pills doesn't lessen the seriousness of someone deciding to take their own lives! From the minute I picked up the phone I had been politely trying to tell her that we'd already decided on someone else, but she wouldn't stop talking about their office policies, then talked just enough to insult my brother, so that's when I got loud and told her, "Listen, I wouldn't come to you if you gave out the fountain of youth and heroine. Goodbye." or something equally as nonsensical along those lines. Don't know the doctor, don't think I have to know since he hired this precious a*hole, but if that's the way the staff treats the psychiatric conditions of the people who make their jobs possible (!!!!), I'd rather not send a paranoid schizophrenic to quite possibly be harassed or made fun of without his even knowing. read more

Dr. Earthman is a good doctor, and did a good job with my anxiety, treated it conservatively, which I appreciated. The only reason I am leaving his practice is due to the staff (receptionist). I went in for my appointment and waited by the frosted glass window for quite a while, while she was messing with her computer and another person, While with a sick baby in hand (which she had said the day before I could not reschedule due to a sick baby without a fee). I went and sat in the lobby after that, only to ask her 40 minutes later about my appointment. She gave me a smirk and said I didn't even know you were here. My sick baby was fussing the entire time and she didn't know I was there? First appointment of the day?? It is not the Doctor so much as the staff. read more

He is also very well informed about treating the "whole" person and encourages different modalities of treatment; and, isn't about relying on medication alone. The office was nice and comfortable. When I checked in, the receptionist knew my name and was thorough in explaining the form to fill out. Dr. Earthman came to get me when it was time for my appointment. I was very anxious since I'd never gone to get help for mental health issues (depression & anxiety) and probably should have several years ago when the problems first began. Dr. Earthman made me feel very comfortable, he has a good bedside manner. I felt like he gave me the time I needed to explain what I was going through and he was very knowledgeable when choosing the right medication to treat me with and coming up with a plan to get better. A previous reviewer said if you only want medications, he's your guy. From my experience, medication is just one option. He also discussed alpha stim treatments, changes to diet and exercise, and therapy. In my case, he seemed to view medication as a way to help me as I work through my problems and ultimately take me off of them once I'm healthy. He did explain that it can be a few years, not a quick fix and explained what I should expect to experience as I adjust to the medication. I left knowing that we had a plan moving forward, I understood what to expect medication-wise, had some recommendations of therapists, and some goals for self treatment. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars was that it took 3 weeks and multiple phone calls/voicemails to schedule my first appointment (5 weeks later). I'm a little confused at all the bad reviews on Dr. Earthman. He is helping me with sleeping medication dependence, and he's been wonderful. He's not a physiologist, he is a Psychiatrist - a medical Dr. who works with people with addictions and dependence - You are not there to talk to anyone about your problems. He's pretty awesome and so is his receptionist, Julie. The appointments are pretty quick. He wants to know what's happening with your meds and how you're feeling. He is there to help you transition off medication with as little pain as possible. That's my two cents for anyone who cares. read more

I saw Dr. Earthman 2013. Even though I was diagnosed with PTSD, he stated that I could not have the illness because I was not a combat veteran. After providing him with the definition of PTSD and a copy of my history, I fired him. I would not recommend Dr. Earthman to anyone. read more

My experience with Dr. Earthman was great, and he provided exactly the help I needed. Our first meeting was the longest, where he asked the most questions and we went over my medical history together. The next step was taking a test, but it was very straightforward. Once the results came in, he prescribed a plan of medication. The spin up was difficult but once I got over that, things were great. In the beginning we had meetings every other week so he could monitor my progress, but we moved to a monthly schedule, then finally a quarterly schedule. The early meetings were longer but the following ones were maintenance sessions that lasted maybe 15 minutes. I never felt like Dr. Earthman rushed me, however you should be aware that he's a psychiatrist, not a psychologist, which means he's not the guy who you'll talk to for an hour about your problems. He was friendly, if a bit reserved, but he never hesitated to answer any of my questions, and he offered sound advice that helped me over the course of my treatment. My only qualm was with the front office staff, who seemed a touch disorganized. There was once a solid three days when they wouldn't answer my pharmacy's request for a refill, and there was one time when they brought up a charge that was apparently six months old but never presented to me. I paid it and took them at their word. I would recommend Dr. Earthman if you are in need of psychiatric services. read more

When I walked in I was greeted by an extremely warm and friendly receptionist by my name. They have an online portal to fill out all your paperwork before hand--so check in was super fast. The office is inviting, comfortable, and well decorated. Dr. Earthman called me back himself (and on time) and met with me. I think that Dr Earthman is an excellent doctor. He is calm and dedicated wants to help you with all of your issues. He listens and made me feel comfortable. I am glad that I started seeing him. Seeing him and deciding for yourself is absolutely the way that you should go. He believes that there is more to getting well than just talking and medication. Your whole well-being plays a massive role in your mental health. Taking care of yourself, includes taking care of yourself. If you truly want to become the person you should be, this is the doctor for you. I am very happy and satisfied with seeing him. I have been seeing Dr. Earthman for over a year, and I definitely do not understand the negative comments about his receptionist. She is always friendly and interested in what is going on with me. We always chat for a few minutes while I am scheduling my next appointment. Dr. Earthman has been great for me. On my first visit, after visiting with me for quite a while, he said I was on the wrong medication and prescribed something different. He was exactly right. He actually got me off some medications, and I am now on less than when I began seeing him and with great results. I scheduled an appointment after calling numerous times and no one ever answered. When they finally called me back I told them I would like to be checked for adhd. When I showed up, earthman said I would have to come back another day to be tested bit he gladly took my copay while providing no service. Worst customer service experience i've ever had. The office manager was on vacation and no one was checking her voicemail. It took me 4 days to reach someone and that was only because I left a voicemail in another staff member's voicemail and on the doctor on day 4. I got a call back the next day from the doctor who told me the following: "My office manager is on vacation so if you could exercise patience someone will call you". His follow up appointments are 5 minutes. you receive a text reminder of your appointment 2 days prior to your appointment however for rescheduling you need to call 3 days prior to your appointment. This guy is awful. This is a shrink who makes you fill out 8 pages of paperwork before you come in so he doesn't have to ask you any questions or do any work. He is obviously in the business only for the money, as demonstrated by his missed appointment policy which requires 3 business days of notice or a $280 fee, no shit! Then he speaks to you in a barely audible monotone for about 25 minutes, gives you a refill on whatever scrips your previous doctor gave you, and if you challenge his opinion of your condition he cites prisoner and mouse studies rather than any symptoms you might be demonstrating and tells you he doesn't think he is the right doctor for you. It was a total waste of my time and money and I went home in tears feeling like I had just been raped for my money and personal information. This guy was so terrible I may never go to a shrink again. read more

I met with Dr.Earthman three times for a total of about 30 minutes. I was just trying to get assessed for ADD. I paid $20 for the first visit. the same two weeks later for the assessment another $20 the next day to be told I do intact have ADD (this visit was less than 5 minutes) and a fee for the follow up to get a stronger dosage. When Dr.Earthman suggested a Pharmacy he could send the prescription to electronically I agreed. The Target pharmacy was not able to get all the information they needed from the office. Dr.Earthman insisted their system was not up to date and suggested another Target. this pharmacy was missing the same information. I went out of my way to find out what information they were missing so as to get the prescription I needed and left a message on Dr.Earthman's phone system. This morning I got a call from Dr.Earthman telling me to "cool it" with the messages (the only message I left) and that he would send my prescription to another pharmacy but charge me a fee to do so. The other option given was to end services with Dr.Eathman. I elected to end my services. read more
