The staff put a lot of attention to detail into every room. Everything was exceptionally clean and well organized. And if you are into workmanship, pay attention to the building details. A lot of work went into ensuring everything looked right. The amenities are great. The pool, the pond, the open fields, the trails; everything is well maintained - and this is over 100 acres! The restaurant and events room are very nice. The food is very well prepared and I highly recommend the five course dinner. This is a boutique establishment so portions are not like you'd see at a chain. However, the five course was just right for us. The only somewhat negative thing I can write about is their in-room wifi. If you're in for the night and would like to watch tv, you'll be frustrated quickly as the streams pause a lot to buffer. I don't know if it's their bandwidth limitation by their ISP or poor wifi design. Be it as it may, this is certainly something that's not a big deal as you really should enjoy your time there, take a walk, disconnect, and just live.

The property is located about an hour from IAH Airport, and the route was very direct and easy to navigate. We stayed in one of their cabins, which was beautifully decorated and very spacious. If you enjoy a rustic atmosphere, this is definitely the place for you. The cabins were comfortable and fit perfectly with the charm of the property. All of the wedding events were held in the main building. We attended the rehearsal dinner, which featured a buffet-style Mexican meal with flour and corn tortillas, pinto beans, yellow rice, chicken and beef strips with peppers, corn chips, queso, and a variety of toppings. I have to say, the yellow rice was absolutely delicious! For dessert, they served a bread pudding that was out of this world. Honestly, it reminded me more of monkey bread than traditional bread pudding, and it was delicious. We returned the following morning for breakfast, which included yogurt, egg frittata, French toast, bacon, coffee, and juices. My only small disappointment was that maple syrup was not available; they only offered agave. Also, decaf coffee was not readily available, so you had to ask for it. The wedding itself was beautiful. During cocktail hour, they served chicken on a stick and a cheesy bread appetizer. Being from New Jersey, where we are used to cocktail hours with an endless variety of food, I have to admit I was expecting a few more options! Dinner was also served buffet-style and included Brussels sprouts, potatoes, prime rib, and chicken. Everything we tried was delicious. I'm not sure how often it rains in Willis, but it certainly did while we were there! Fortunately, the cabins were equipped with umbrellas, which was a thoughtful touch and definitely came in handy. Before arriving, I interacted with a woman named Frankie, and I have to give her special recognition. Frankie seemed like a one-woman show! She was there all three days and appeared to do everything--from serving guests and moving tables to helping run the events, making coffee, and assisting behind the bar. I honestly don't know if she was also involved in preparing the food, but nothing would surprise me! I was so impressed by her work ethic that I kept telling my family, "I hope they're tipping her well!" Overall, The Historic Hill House and Farm is a charming and beautiful venue, especially for anyone who appreciates a rustic setting. The cabins were spacious and beautifully decorated, the food was delicious, and the staff worked incredibly hard to make the events run smoothly. Frankie, in particular, left a lasting impression on me because of how hard she worked throughout our entire stay.

The pools were not clear and the pools are honestly 1990 pools. The water splash pad was not on and the seating was faded. The street signs are peeling and need to be updated especially on the important roads that lead to the properties and amenities. Its like no one updates or up keeps the pools or any amenities. There was bee hives on the playgrounds old decking. Looks like the buyers who purchased in 2017 had better times there cause as of now theres nothing to do did I mention the roads are very bumpy.

The cabins were large with at least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Very large living room area and full kitchens. There was no wi-fi in the cabins but free wi-fi in the main meeting area. There were miles of hiking trails, water sled, volleyball pit, swimming pool and places to sit and take in the area's beauty. BTW the gators never left the water. Now about the food. OMG!!!! It was premium 5 star eating. It was buffet but beautifully arranged like in higher class hotel restaurants. A big shout out to their Chef Jim. I have mixed reactions to our recent visit and. I have wavered between giving this review 4 or 3…read morestars. We have visited this retreat for over 35 years previously known as Chain 'O Lakes. We have noted and appreciated the improvements made over the years. Beautiful, serene, rustic setting-a great place to unwind. -WIFI worked well and consistently throughout our visit. -Cabins basically clean, good beds, clean bed linens and generous numbers of towels. Dining table, dining chairs, side tables and coffee tables as well as couches are well worn. Basic dinnerware and eating utensils; there are no skillets, pans or cooking/serve ware utensils such as egg turners, no mixing bowls...you need to bring these with you. -Communication and information lacking. The website does not provide current updates to the facility and the status of its amenities and services. We had planned to enjoy one meal a day at The Hilltop restaurant and it was closed for our 3 day/2night visit. We had planned to have burgers/snacks by the pool and the snack bar was closed. These unannounced and unexpected closings caused us to leave the retreat and find a grocery store 15 miles away. Then we had to select food items that could be baked because we had no pots/pans or skillets nor utensils to cook and serve with. Amenities not in service included The Hilltop Herb Farm Restaurant, the snack bar beside the pool, and the hot tub. ***PLEASE NOTE: The reason I am giving this review 4 stars is the congeniality of the people at the front desk. Had they been rude I would have dropped one or more stars.*** When I inquired as to why the restaurant and snack bar were closed I was given these points of interest from the very nice young ladies at the front desk. Additionally they very graciously responded that they would inform management about my concerns. -Oh the restaurant is closed during the week-well sometimes it's open. It will be open this weekend I think. (Well, I was leaving on Friday!) -Regarding the snack bar being closed: Well it's only open if the restaurant is. -We've been slammed with big groups and some summers we are more family oriented. (I'm sorry, I was not advised that inconsistant hospitality was a management strategy!) -Regarding the hot tub; well, things break. (Understandable that things break, but how is it being addressed and will it be repaired before my party leaves?) -Carriage Rides? Nope, not in service. There are limited hours of operation for the gift shop which has gifts, snacks, and fishing supplies. It would be a convenient service if this area remained open until 9 pm. A nice evening walk to this area for an ice cream for the kids would have been a nice option. Overall there seems to be a lack of attention, concern, and dedication to providing guests with current information and procedures in order for guests to have an excellent experience. When O think of this visit I feel the most descriptive words would be "sad and lacking". It stings a little to pay the prices of our stay and to have so much broken or closed. I could have spent much less and had similar natural beauty to behold at a state or national park. I do hope that management will button things up quite a bit and provide a friendly, enthusiastic, friendly staff, with current information easily and readily available regarding amenities, services, and procedures for checking out canoes and other equipment. Service is friendly and pool restaurant good. The country club is in walking distance if you want golf or tennis. There are several pools. For families, the pool is THE activity and truly, the only activity. The woodlands lake is a 5 min drive so the trolly and pedal boats entertained us! It was fun. The breakfast was delicious. What was a disappointment: - total of 1 lifeguard for the entire pool area, which included three pools and a lazy river with a wave area. There is "swim at your own risk" signage, but that is NOT a family friendly environment. - there is a 1x/ day arts and crafts that you have to pay extra to do. - the other staff-led activities were bingo, movie by the pool, and karaoke. The staff was not energetic, smiling, or enthusiastic with the exception of the activities manager who led the water melon eating contest. - it rained for one of the afternoons so we all went into the conference center for games. Wow was that disappointing. The staff was sitting around at a table, no music, no explanation of the table games, not interacting with the guests. When asked they said "you can play whichever game you want, it's self service." My husband and I used our phones to at least put on music, we facilitated a game of tag, and several families had to escalate to the manager to setup the karaoke and popcorn machine because the staff in the room was literally sitting around sticking to a rigid schedule and telling us they can't set anything up until a certain time. Of course the manager said that is absolutely not true. - the staff didn't know how to work the projector for karaoke so the kids just used a laptop that the staff member had sitting on her lap. Minimal interaction etc. The events team staff (minus the supervisor) was really subpar. Easily made for a 2 rating for sure.
