Lovely beach with great facilities. We went on a cloudy day for a low key experience. Not too crowded, room to play football, and aside from a screaming child whose parents were following the "let them cry it out" philosophy, it was super relaxing. If you don't pack a picnic there are plenty of food options in the cafe. Wraps are around $8.95. A note on the parking- without a season pass there are limited amounts of daily passes available, as stated on their website. However, they say there's about 25. That parking lot holds at least 90 cars so if there aren't too many people with seasonal passes driving to the beach on any given weekend, you have a decent shot at getting a daily pass. read more

I won't say it is secluded but it is definitely a very quiet beach.. which I love. The parking situation is a little iffy but we lucked out for a nice afternoon at this beach. Walking along the water is always nice, but house watching here is a big plus. I am starting to see the appeal of the Hamptons, and the beach is one of them! I was surprised how high and strong the waves were.. not sure if it was because we visited in September or if the waves are always like this in NY - I've only ever been to the beaches down south. Either way, I did not feel comfortable going in the water and I am a strong swimmer. read more

East Hampton Main Beach has appeared on many "top 10 beaches" lists. The beach is spectacular. Beautiful sand with no rocks or pebbles, incredible mansions lining the beach behind the dunes, and great people watching! From May 15th to September 15th, you must have a parking pass or you WILL get ticketed. There is a daily lot, and for $25 you can park there on the weekdays. On the weekends, there are only 40 pay-spots available, so get there early! To avoid parking headaches, there is a free shuttle which can pick you up (at certain locations) and drop you off at the beach. Locations and schedule is at: http://thefreeride.com/east-hampton There is a pavilion with restrooms and snack counter. You can eat outdoors at the tables or on one of the benches. Its covered, so you can get out of the sun if you wish. They have outdoor showers for getting the sand off of you at the end of the day. You can change in the restrooms. Note that lifeguards are off duty and bathrooms close at 5pm. In the evenings,its a great place to bring wine, cheese, and a blanket. In the pay lot is a pretty pond. There's a walking trail that takes you behind the dunes and along side the pond. Its worth a quick walk if you've never seen it. Be CAREFUL of ticks, the Hamptons have a major tick problem. If you like beach walking, this is the place for you. If you go to the right, you can walk all the way down to Georgica Beach, which is where Georgica Pond is. Many famous people have mansions on the pond. Sometimes you can cross the small waterway connecting the ocean with the pond, sometimes not. If you go to the left from Main Beach, you can walk for miles and miles all the way to Montauk. It can get very crowded during the season. If you prefer privacy, East Hampton has other beaches (no lifeguard) for just getting some peace and quiet. Its amazing to think such an incredible beach exists just 2 hours from NYC. read more

Wonderful, clean beach! As others have mentioned, unless you are a resident or secured the highly coveted non-resident beach parking pass in advance, there is no way you're parking your car nearby for a reasonable price, let alone park it, period. However, it's a nice walk. If you're staying in the area, it's about 20 minutes from East Hampton village proper. The bathrooms are relatively clean for a beach so that's a plus. There is also a little beach food shack with burgers, lobster rolls, ice cream, etc. Dogs are allowed on the beach after 6pm over the summer :) read more

After doing some research, I decided this would be the beach I would go to during my short trip to the Hamptons. As other yelp reviews have said, the parking lot by the beach is by permit only so I needed a way to get there from where I was staying. One of my friends suggested an easy idea. We drove our car to the Lumber lane long term parking lot and hopped on one of the free rides that brings you directly to the beach. It was so simple! Once we got there, it was such a pleasant surprise to be greeted with such a serene beach. It was not overcrowded at all and the weather was just perfect. There's a grill on the boardwalk which serves everything from burgers and chicken tenders to ice cream. Prices were not astronomical either- think Manhattan movie theater prices. BUT be warned, it is CASH ONLY. I can't wait to head back to the Hamptons to visit the beach again. Such a pleasant and calm environment as compared to my daily NYC grind. read more

Unfortunately, if you're not willing to walk here or have someone drop you off, you're going to have to spend a lot ($250) and be speedy quick about getting your beach sticker at the beginning of the summer. They only have a limited amount of village stickers- 2,600 which is NOTHING when you factor in the amount of people who flock to the hamptons during the summer months. In fact, if you've seen Main Beach on a hot day in August, 2,600 probably isn't even what it sees in a day. The town permits are available to residents for free and nonresidents for $200, clearly if you're a resident you'll just get the town permit and go to Atlantic Avenue beach, which is just as nice. If you're not a resident, it may be worth it for you to spend the extra $50, but I'd really reccomend against it. There are many beaches outside the parameters of the village, but only 5 inside and it's guaranteed that those are going to be the most packed. The beach itself is awesome and like the other village beaches, they're really good about making sure there's a well trained lifeguard (it's a pretty safe bet that the lifeguards are surfers and extremely familiar with swimming in the ocean) on duty. My dad built the boardwalk type big wooden thing (for lack of a better word, or any word, you can see in the website above) which contains decent bathrooms and Chowder Bowl snack bar which is most popular for fast food type choices like french fries and hot dogs, you can also get things like ice cream bars that the average ice cream truck would be carrying. read more

I am not a BEACH person - but this was a nice beach. The sand felt nice. There are locker rooms to change and bathrooms - which was very clean. There is also a store to buy umbrellas and towels etc - including a place to get food and snacks if hungry. As far as the water is concerned - IT WAS COLD...... with no exaggeration and waves were a bit harsh. Again the water was too cold. The parking situation: During the week it is not a problem to find parking for non residents which is supposed to be $25. However, during the weekend non residents permit goes really fast. The next alternative is park at the long term parking in east Hampton - which is about 5 minutes away. There is a shuttle that pick up and drop off every 10 minutes which is really convenient. We dropped of the group at the beach and went to long term parking via the shuttle. Overall a nice beach. read more

By far the best of the NY beaches. The sand is slightly coarse, but not annoying. Both the sand and water are very clean. It wasn't rocky like Huntington or dirty like Jones and the other city beaches. The neighbors we encountered on the way were so pleasant. All of the people you walk by or see are always smiling and saying hello. It was annoying having to walk over a mile to get to the beach on the weekend. Nice bath houses and a place to get a snack. East Hampton Beach is the prettiest of the Long Island beaches in my opinion. The sand is wider than South Hampton or the other Hampton beaches. There are no true white sand beaches in New York like there are in Aruba or Sarasota Florida. But East Hampton beach sand is softer and prettier than the rest of Long Island in my opinion. Maybe the sand is less dirty. I worked in the Hamptons in the summers and got to stay in each of the Hampton beach towns. The beach here is so much nicer than other Hampton beaches in my opinion that parking permits are already sold out for the 2010 season. read more

What was nice about the Main Beach in East Hampton - you could actually see the beach from the parking lot. Granted it's a small parking lot beach side, the main lot is a bit further away. I had to do a lot of research to find out about the parking permit. I went on the Friday before Labor Day weekend and it wasn't crowded at all. Although we went early to secure a permit, it was not necessary. There were a lot of space in the lot. Limited weekend passes so I did not want to risk it. Nice beach. Not busy. Talk about a secluded beach, not even Google Maps will tell you where this is! I came here after finding out it was listed as the top rated beach in America for 2013. I guess if you're not a town resident you can pay $25 to get in or park a mile away and walk here as the parking lot is small. I came here an hour or so before sunset so I parked my car for 30 mins in the 15 min parking section (hehe). The sand and the waves here are perfect, its not like Robert Moses or Cedar Beach where the ocean will do body slams, wave after wave. They were big enough for people of all ages to enjoy without the thought of being swept away. I brought my dslr to capture some shots and I must say it was one of the few times that being there was much better than what actually came out on camera. Looking towards the West part of the beach you could see the mist between the ocean and the oceanfront houses with the slight sun trying to peak through the clouds. Just one of situations where I was at the right place at the right time. I'd love to come back when its hotter and enjoy the beach but I can see how this place must turn into Robert Moses/Jones Beach on a July 4th like day except it would a daily thing in the summer. read more

Main Beach in East Hampton is the "All-American" beach. If you can deal with the parking situation (permit parking only) or can trek your stuff down Ocean Ave, once you get there, you just want to hang all day. The sand is just powder and you will not have to search out a spot free of trash. It is impeccable. From the grass dunes and huge mansions that line beach (hence the Gucci beach bags), to the shake-shingled "chowder bowl" stand that offers anything you want to eat , to the american flag breezing from the huge flagpole, to the plethora of Hamptonite families, this place is really a great place to spend the day. You gotta love it when you hear two little kids say goodbye to each other after a summer of fun with "Maybe I'll see you in the winter..." read more

It's FINE not great. I wanted to see it because it was listed on Dr. Beach's list of the 10 best beaches in America. What a joke! It's clean and wide and the sand is pretty. The water is fairly shallow for a ways so it's nice for little kids. Other than that it doesn't have much going for it. The water is, of course, freezing. The snack bar serves the usual junk. As far as I could tell you have to pay to use the changing rooms or change in the bathroom. There parking situation is a joke. On the West Coast and Hawaii there seems to be a strong commitment to open access to the beaches for all. Not so in the Hamptons! There are only 40 day passes a day, not spots. So even though half the lot was empty when we got there we still couldn't park. Not what you'd call welcoming, though there is some sort of shuttle. We parked at Lee and Cottage street. Parking seems to be legal there (we didn't get towed) and it was less than a 10 minute walk to the beach. It probably annoys the one percenters. So it's good for a Northeast beach (though not a drastic improvement over others) but it's nothing like the beaches in Hawaii and even Florida. read more

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sounds of awesomeness. I've been coming here for 31 years and each time I go I appreciate it more and more. My favorite time to go is off season and sit on the benches and embrace the quietness. I love walking down to the rocks on each side and illegal crossing over to some of the private beaches. Honestly, never even knew NY had beaches like this. Everyone I was with including my parents, thought we were in Florida. Truly blue waters and white sands, not the grey water you are used to in NY. They have a nice area in the front for food with outside seating, bathrooms, changing rooms, etc. The only downside which is why it's not 5 stars for me, is if you are not a resident, you CANNOT PARK ON WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS!. OTHERWISE DURING THE WEEK IT IS $20 PER CAR. If you are here on the weekends, you can park in town and tab a cab for about 10 bucks or walk 1.5 mile to the beach.... read more

For swimmers, this beach is highly overrated and not better than Long Beach or Robert Moses. Waves are much stronger than either of those two, and it was the first of all these places where they were too strong for me or anyone else to swim. Might be great for surfers, boogie boarders, sunbathers and socialites, but it is a swimmer's hell unless you like to get knocked on your rear every 5 seconds. We just visited Main Beach today since it was Dr. beach's Number 1 pick on his 2013 list and I'm not sure what he was thinking. The parking situation was enough not to even consider this beach in the Top 100 beaches. The Town of East Hampton only distributes 40 parking passes a day so if you are not in line by 9am you will get stuck parking in a free village lot miles away. Not bad right since its free and you just saved the $25 parking fee. . No one tells you the free electric shuttles that transport you from the parking lot to the beach only seat 5 passengers plus the driver. There were lines up to 15 people waiting to get back to their cars and only 2 shuttles that run every 15-20 minutes. I'm sure everyone can do the math. We opted to pay for a cab to bring us back to our car. If that wasn't bad enough, you had to pay $5 for a shower that had warm water. Oh and by the way, they wouldn't even let cars with handicap stickers buy a permit to park in the beach lot after the designated 40 were sold out. Sorry Dr. beach but I have to give Main Beach in East Hampton a HUGE THUMBS DOWN!!! read more
