This is my second time at East Indian Company on Robertson. What I like about this resto is there's something for everyone! For a buffet the flavours were delicious and the service was fast. I appreciate that the food was always hot. My water was always refilled and I didn't have to wait for the server to take away my plates. It is a shame that you have to pay extra for naan though. read more

Platter - I don't really recommend. the Samosa was fine but the Pakora were REALLY salty and not that good? the mango chutney was also very strange. This visit was my first and I really didn't have any expectations other than my partner thinking I would like the food. I opted for the buffet as I find in Indian restaurants you either share entrees with a group or you taste as much as possible via the smorgasbord. What a treat it was. I have to be transparent up front...I had intentions of trying everything but some desserts (not a big fan of the Indian version). However, certain items were so Delish I went back for seconds and had to wave the white-flag before I was able to. Needless to say I will be going back to complete my mission now that I DO HAVE EXPECTATIONS. I started as I always do when eating buffets- with the salad, appetizers et al. I will limit my description of the experience to the Samosas. Accompanied by a mango chutney I could not get enough of 'em. Not to contradict myself but I would be remiss if I did not mention that I included the Tandoori chicken and it was phenomenal (yes I got more). The next round was the aforementioned "seconds". Then I went to the mains which included rice, potatoes & veggies and proteins (different chicken dishes, lamb and beef). And another samosa. I cannot remember the names and as I mentioned there were both protein and vegetable dishes I didn't get to. Oh yea I also had two servings of the shrimp noodles. The beef dish I won't try again but everything else I will have seconds or in some cases thirds. The noodles were exceedingly delicious. So as you can appreciate I did not get to the complete offering but I did sneak in at the end a coconut bar, that was strangely similar to a Nanaimo bar, and the three staple flavours of ice cream- vanilla, chocolate & strawberry. I went to the Robertson location first and hear they have a second location downtown. They layouts of both restaurant and very different and I absolutely love the Somerset one! The decor is very nice and brings much authenticity to the restaurant! Naan bread: you must order!! They are made in house with the specialty ovens -- so fresh and just so delightful. 30$/ head it's a lot for the amount of food choices they serve 1- lack of vegetarian appetizers 2- lack of non-veg appetizers 3- the main thing they charge you for naan. ridiculous... already charging you 30$/ head and on top they charge you for the naan and drinks.... usually indian buffet naan is free and drinks too. i think they never been to brar's buffet .... go and learn what buffet means .... only one name comes in my mind thieves . they know everyone will eat naan so they put a price tag on it ..... greediness limit is to the sky ..... food is not spicy at all . its a restaurant for western population not for indians the atmosphere is amazing . lots of beautiful gods status all over the resto. it looks like we are eating meat in temple ..... we dont meat in temples ... but they are insulting hindu gods left and right .... ... shame on them . in order to make money they will do anything... i'll never go to this place again and will nor recommend to anyone else for me this resto is zero star.... i didn't eat meat there coz of all god's statuses. read more

East India Company was unfortunately underwhelming! I heard decent things about this restaurant but the food lacked flavour and spice. In terms of the buffet options, they did have quite a number of vegan and gluten-free options but none of the options (vegan or meat-based) were flavourful at all. I found myself adding salt and hot sauce to try to spice it up. I also found in comparison to other Indian buffets, it was a little more on the pricy side. For example, naan was an extra charge. Note, I went for lunch and it was approximately 22$ (tip included). I did appreciate their customer service but overall it was not a fulfilling experience. I am always on the lookout for Indian, North African or Middle Eastern food...and came across this little gem. While not much to look at from the outside, as soon as we stepped in I knew I had made a good choice. The aroma's of a variety of indian dished filled the air and while the decor was somewhat simple, there were a couple traditional centerpieces that were extraordinary. As for the food, the lunch buffet had a very good and varied selection. I tried most of the salads and entrees, all of which meet or exceeded my expectations for a Indian buffet. While I did not get anything from it, the chutney bar was well stocked with every chutney/relish you could want. I suppose I wish there had been a few 'spicier' dishes, but alas I should not expect that at a buffet. The lamb madras lacked much meat, being mostly bone. Again, somewhat expected. So, I was scouting nearby places and noticed this plplace is quite near to where I live. I decided to give this a try and went for their lunch buffet. Thursday afternoon. Not much rush. The interior decoration is beautiful and very aesthetically pleasing. I was immediately seated and the waiter told me the options. One problem I had was that the menu that was on the table was in French and I do not know in French. Their buffet was a standard buffet although without as many options. You had the usuals which all foreigners are familiar with. They do not have rotis or naan standard but has to be ordered separately which is very unusual. That essentially increases the price of your buffet because the curries need the naan bread. That being said, the garlic was nice soft and crispy and went well with the curries. The curries were nothing great about. They were tempered down and given my Indian heritage bland for my taste. I specially must point out that the mango chicken needed to be more tangy. The dessert was good. The mango mousse was delicious as was the ladoo. Not a fan of the jalebi which was definitely stale. There was only one waiter and my water was not refilled and the naan was brought in late. Overall would suggest to come if you need a quick fix for your Indian craving but nothing more exciting. read more

I've had the lunch and dinner buffets here, and my vote is to go for the lunch one; for dinner, I remember the only difference being a scallop curry (which was AMAZING, however). They have a good variety of dishes that are spiced just right, and not too bland. I really enjoy their vegetable korma (somehow really thick and rich, and creamy), and the goat curry (the sauce is to DIE for)! Only thing is I wish they had more burfi for dessert, and maybe add a super spicy dish such as vindaloo! read more

Went there twice already! Food is really awesome and spicy = good Indian palate spicy! Food: Really good. They manage to execute complex flavours through the spices well! I like strongly flavoured foods and this certainly delivers! Price/Quantity: I find it a tad bit pricey but it's very much at par with other Indian restaurants I've been to. Quantity is generous enough to fill you up! I once got a take away and it was a HUGE portion.. Second time, dined in with couple of friends and 1 dish per person and sharing was convenient. Nothing left for takeaways :P Service: While taking away, they were nice enough to pack a plate and some napkins and cutleries since I was living in a student-housing with nothing at that time.. Very helpful servers to make suggestions depending on your spice preference, too! AFAIK, there's a buffet, too! 23$ or something.. But looks delicious! Our family has been a fan of the East India Company for over ten years. The buffet is always full of delicious items that are accessible to all. My favourite is the butter chicken, and I adore their desserts! We've held events here in the past, including my husband's birthday last week where 27 people showed up to celebrate. I first visited the East India Company for a farewell lunch for one of my coworkers. Although I'd heard the odd comment about the place I'd never passed it on my journey through Somerset Village, and once we got there I realized why. The East India Company is tucked into the side of a high-rise building which must hold office space. Although it's a bit hidden, the East Indian restaurant was bustling with customers when we headed in with a group of 15. This was the perfect place for lunch with a large group. The decorating is stunning - lots of traditional pieces and beautiful Indian art. They have a lunch and dinner buffet that includes a salad bar, chutneys, pickles, yogurts, a couple dozen hot entrees, and dessert bar. IT BLEW MY MIND. The food was fresh, tasty and there were plenty of options for all palates. Even our accountant who loathes anything spicy or or "exotic" (her words, not mine!) couldn't stop raving about how delicious everything was. I later found out that my staff knew about this gem because they catered our manager's wedding. Hurrah - they cater! And offer a great takeout menu. When we mentioned our manager they brought several free appetizers to the table as well and made us promise to pass on their best wishes - delightful staff! I was so overwhelmed with the awesomeness of East India Company that I can't count the number of times I've been back since. The abundance of choice coupled with their fantastic service makes this an Indian Restaurant to remember. This is the restaurant that got me hooked on Indian food. Consistently high quality, good variety, charming decor, exceptionally kind staff and owners. It is a bit pricier than other Indian buffets, which may be the only "negative" - to me, it is worth every penny. My bill for buffet, naan and a soft drink, is around $25 + tax and tip, and I see no issue with that because everything is delicious and you will wish for a larger stomach. They have a few different types of naan, most notably the cheese naan, which you might have guessed has a layer of paneer cheese in the middle. One order of naan is plenty for two people (or one greedy pig like myself). Most of the buffet dishes remain the same, day after day, and have been for the many years I've been coming here. One or two items may change, in particular the samosas seem to run out quickly (they are great), and are sometimes replaced with something else. They have a number of cold salads, two kinds of rice, chana masala, navratan (my fave), palak paneer, punjabi kadhi (soup), mini samosas, vegetable pakora, butter chicken, tandoori bbq chicken, and a few other meat or seafood dishes that escape me. There is always a centerpiece "dish of the day", a bit fancier than the regular buffet items, as well as a large assortment of chutneys. Only the chana masala is a bit spicy. Keep an eye out for chili peppers if you're sensitive. Everything else is quite tame and accessible. Sometimes the dish of the day might be a little spicy but they usually point this out. Either way it is a "dry heat" that doesn't hit so hard - milder than hot chicken wings. For desserts they have pistachio rice pudding, gulab jamun, mango mousse, fudge, and usually one or two rotating choices. All the desserts are very sweet and rich, as they should be. All in all, a consistently satisfying experience. I have been here at least 50 times, and never had a bad meal. read more

I've eaten here a couple times. I've eaten both dinner and lunch buffets. I find the food very tasty and service quick and friendly. The naan bread is not included with the buffet. It's an extra cost. I've been to many Indian buffets where this is included. But my main complaint, is that their fountain pop refills are NOT free. This is almost unheard of in today's restaurants...so lose a whole star in my rating for that. read more

Have been here a number of times because the atmosphere, service and if course the food are all just great. I enjoy all the dishes and sometimes order naan with the meal but sometimes enjoy the rice that is available on the buffet. Decent wine list as well. What a huge disapponitment! six of us decided to check this place out, and neither of us were happy with our food.the buffet for some reason, is cold...also, none of the dishes taste half as good as they look! the palak paneer is bland, the vegetable masala has no masals in it, and the kidney bean salad has no taste or concept? also...who doesn't include naan/roti/bread with their buffet?? $19.95/person and with bread added came to $50 with tax for 2! save your money, go eat at Havelis where 4 can eat in that price and the food actually tastes like good Indian food. read more

I've eaten at this restaurant twice now and both times have been very good. As people have previously mentioned the decor is very nice, which creates a comfortable atmosphere for a great dinner out. Also the service was very good, servers came around regularly to see if we had questions about the menu and during the meal to check that we enjoyed everything. The buffet was good looking but I choose to order from the menu. We ordered the Dal Makhani and a chicken dish I can't remember the name of, but both were excellent. The Dal Makhani was my favourite. The rice could have been better and some of the side salads didn't blow me away but it was a good experience all around. read more

Ordered delivery from here twice. First time I ordered a chicken dish, I think it was made with mushroom soup, it was tomatoey and creamy with mushrooms in it. Pretty gross, definitely not authentic. The samosas are mini and they were quite good and the dessert (galab jamun?) was really sweet and good too. I give a lot of things second chances so, the second time it took almost 2 hours for the food to get here, I called twice and asked where it was and each time they told me it was on its way, the driver was talking on the phone and didnt say anything to me. I ordered chicken 65 and rice, my boyfriend loved it, it was dry chicken pieces with jalepenos. Thats really it. I've never saw another Indian dish like it so I'm assuming its not authentic either. In the pantheon of Indian buffets this one is a pretty decent one. When you first arrive there are some very, erm, striking decorations. Lions aside, the food is very good, they had a great mustard crab thing that was awesome and some of their curries are very good, plus they have local beers which is a great addition. The selection wasn't great but what they had was good. Unfortunately things go a bit downhill in some aspects. First of all naan costs extra, which is a bit annoying. But secondly I found the service to be a bit spotty. The waiter was very friendly when he was around, but he was really hard to find, especially at bill time. Overall I don't know if I would go out of my way to go back, it doesn't really stand out compared to other Indian buffets. read more

Love this place. Big fan of Indian food based on the fact that spicy is my thing. I love spicy food. East India Company takes care of that spicy craving. The lunch buffet is a deal. For I believe $12, the lunch buffet offers a large variety of food. Many of their dishes are served spicy but very flavorful! The design concept/upkeep is a 5/5. I used to drive by it all the time and always thought it was some kind of hotel because it's spiffy looking on the outside, as well as on the inside. The interior is very Indian themed and adds to the authentic vibe. Downside is they don't serve naan at the buffet. Sad. Will be coming back for more, soon. read more

Great to have Indian as a buffet. You get to taste a little bit of everything. They have full bar and make great nan bread. Only negative is that they seem to lack proper ventilation in the kitchen which was creating cloud of smoke in the dining area and my clothes smelled a lot smoke. I have been to the East India food company at least a half dozen times. It never disappoints. I have only eaten the buffet. The drink selection is good, the quality of the food is good and consistent. It is not the best Indian food in town, but it is the best Indian Buffet. With a great chutney bar, salad bar, hot entre selection and dessert station, I suggest you go on an empty stomach and wear a pair of loose fitting pants. If seafood is your thing like me, than visit the buffet on Friday, that's when they feature a few seafood items in the buffet. if there was a half star, I would give it 3.5. I should also mention the decor is awesome, beautifully decorated with traditional Indian art. read more

There are plenty of East Indian restaurants in Ottawa but this is one of the better ones if you want an outstanding buffet with excellent variety. My pet peeve is they charge extra for naan which really doesn't make sense given it is a cheap filler. Very nice decor. East India Company in Ottawa is not as good as their Winnipeg location (owner himself runs the Winnipeg restaurant); however their food is good. I'm so surprised that this restaurant only has 3 stars... I had the best dinner of my life at this restaurant last winter. I know a lot of Indian restaurants and I have to say that this one is the best of all. When I went there, I had the buffet, so I tasted many dishes and all of them were excellent. Everything is creamy as it should be, perfectly spiced and not sweet like in many other places. Their desserts are incredible, especially the barfi.
