If you check out the pictures online, it shows cheese boards and a salad bar that looks so exciting. It was honestly terrible. The dinner rolls were hard. It was just awful. This is not the Tuckers Marketplace you remember. My husband and I just dined at Tuckers and he just summed it up perfectly..."well, that is definitely top 3 of the worst meals we've ever had." The food choices were limited (and sadly, 20% of them were rice), everything was lukewarm and bland at best. The roast beef was like shoe leather and the roasted ham was like chewing on a salt cube - the desserts were hard, cold and pre-packaged. The restaurant wasn't even half full on a Friday night, yet the staff, while friendly also seemed sad to be there and not engaged in their jobs whatsoever. Cleanliness left a lot to be desired, but despite that, I kept getting a whiff of some sort of institutional cleaner. The bathrooms don't lock properly, dirty toilets and no hand soap was particularly frustrating when you just felt dirty being there. All in all, this review doesn't come close to describing how gross the food and restaurant were, and given the choice between eating at Tuckers Marketplace and throwing my $100 out the car window, I would choose the latter. read more

The lack of attention to detail in the food was obvious and I could see that the food was made in a rushed manner. We went to Tucker's when they reopened after CoVid, it was horrible. We had decided never to go there again but, after hearing they had brought back their old chef we thought we'd give it another shot. Well, we should have stuck with our previous decision. The food choices were few, flavorless and luke warm. They didn't have the pizza oven fired up so, no pizza for us. The taco station beef smelled disgusting and the taco shells looked soggy. The salad bar only had a few items to choose from for a true salad and the ranch dressing was loaded with vinegar. The coleslaw was extremely bland. Other salads I could not eat because I have a mustard allergy and didn't want to risk a reaction. We ordered water which was served in a bottle that the server left at our table for us to do our own refills. Once that bottle was empty, there was no server in sight, we proceeded to get a second bottle from the refrigerator ourselves. The desserts were bland and boring. Great buffet in perfect location! No matters if it's a large group like ours or a family, there is plenty of room and lots of food choices. There is also well stocked bar and a very beverage wise staff! That's more important than lots of folks realize. Especially if you're new to town! We used to come here 1-2 times per year and were very disappointed when it closed. Then we heard it had reopened. Our favourite place to eat in Ottawa was back. Coming here is a treat for us as we have to travel several hours in multiple vehicles. Well this time around it was a major letdown. The food was bland. And VERY few kid friendly options. (They wouldn't even eat the pizza, and they think little Caesar's is good so...) We grabbed some house spiced chicken (no white meat options, all legs) and it was raw in the middle. Staff apologized and removed it from the buffet. There was not a lot of options. Pizza, chicken fingers, and a ham and roast at the carving station. The rest were all sides. And even still there were maybe 10-15 side options. Bread was just little stale cut up baguette and oddly flour tortillas, but nothing to put in them? Do people eat tortillas on their own? The roast was bland and no options other than medium-rare. Pass. The ham was like eating a chewy salt lick. Pass. The sides were bland, dry and/or barely warm. Chicken fingers and fries it is then, for all the kids and myself. Chicken fingers were pretty good. Fries were nasty. Barely warm and they were garlic fries. How do you screw up fries? The lights were flickering non stop which caused a headache, the place was very loud. In conclusion, we had really expensive chicken fingers. They should have let this place die on a high note. Was excited to return to our old haunt to find a shell of what it used to be. We went on a Thursday - start of tourist season - VERY little selection (many food stations were bare/empty). Food was average with very few proteins available. Pizza oven was not open or available. The salad bar was scant with few options. The desserts tasted like Costco foods and the pudding tasted like the kind you buy for kids lunches. Everything, while well seasoned, felt processed. Very disappointed in the food when comparing to the old marketplace. Then there is the place. Dishes were dirty with food bits still on them - including cutlery that was wrapped for use at our table. Made me wonder how clean the kitchen really was. One of the two washrooms had failing locks and hubby had two people walk in on him while in there. When he brought it up, the response? Well just use the other one, it locks? Really? FFS. The other one? Filthy. Blood and feces obvious on bowl and rim, no paper towels, disgusting. Looked like it hadn't been seen maintenance for a while. Service was friendly but slow and understaffed. This place is no longer the place we frequented prior to COVID. It was sad, overpriced, and my kids were sad that one of their fave places to eat is now gone. We would visit several times a season. This repeat customer is lost forever and would NEVER recommend you go here. There are other great restaurants downtown. This ain't one of them anymore. Overpriced as well. The space is a lot more modern and clean. The food was really great... something for everyone -- Chinese, Italian, carving station... my wife loved the salad bar and my father the carving station. A great buffet with an excellent selection of food. The personal pasta station is delicious the service was excellent and the individual dishes were restocked frequently. The salad bar could be refreshed more often. In general an above average buffet and don't forget it is completely free on your birthday with valid photo ID. Kids 12 & under pay less. So I've been to Tucker's a few times now. For what they are and where they are I would say this place is a great deal. If it was in Nepean or Kanata, I would not be impressed, but really for a place in the Byward Market (with their rents being what they are) to offer a dinner buffet for $17.99 is pretty awesome, seeing as how most places in the Byward Market are total rip-offs. That being said the food is not stellar. You are not going to get Cordon Bleu quality dishes here. But for an all-you-can-eat buffet, the food is as good as you can expect. I really liked the Roast Beef. They had 2 roasts, a rare one and a well-done one. I only tired the well-done one, which was good. The meat was lean and it wasn't tough or rubbery. They also have Yorkshire Pudding here (I love Yorkshire pudding!). It's a little on the dry side and hard side, but I've had much worse. Besides, you just poor gravy all over it and you're all set :) They had a smokey jambalaya which was full of meat and flavour. They also had 2 types of mussels (black bean and white wine with garlic) which were good although some of the mussels were gritty. They had roasted chicken which wasn't bad either. My favourite thing was the fried onion strings. They taste like the stuff on top of green bean casseroles. I could eat a plate of those things! For dessert they had different types of ice cream (they even had spumoni without the candied fruit chunks! I hate candied fruit chunks so I loved their spumoni). The ice cream was a good consistency - not too soft and melted, but not rock hard or freezer burnt. They had frozen yogurt too (strawberry mango, yum!). Their cakes were run of the mill, but acceptable. They also had flan, mousse, cheesecake and various tarts. Selection is not huge, but good enough. The place looked clean. If you have a big appetite and are in the Byward Market and don't want to spend a lot of money, Tucker's Marketplace would be a good option. read more

I went out to eat with my family on a quick visit to Ottawa on a Wednesday. The food selection isn't huge, but very great quality and fresh. There is a section for main dishes, meat, fresh bread and butter, tacos, noodles and a long dessert bar with a chocolate fountain. The staff was very dynamic and patient with us, especially the cook in the make-your-own-noodles area. He took the time to explain to us how it worked, and was amazingly funny. My only complain is that the mussels were very bland, and I certainly wish there were more options, but overall I would definitely go back. read more

TUCKER'S MARKETPLACE? In name ONLY! It is unfortunate that the present ownership is trying to cash in CHEAPLY on the reputation of the previous establishment. This is the worst meal (if you can call it that since practically all we ate was one piece of tasteless, dry and room temperature chicken) we have had in a long time. We should have paid for our beer and walked out. The salad bar was pathetic. The only soup was salty (and I'm ok with salt) to the point of being inedible. Some soup bowls were dirty and the first soup spoon I picked up was sticky. The main meal offerings were limited and not of good quality (a lot of pasta). EVERYTHING we sampled was TASTELESS AND WENT FROM TEPID TO COLD. DISGUSTING! Gone were the nice fresh breads you could cut yourself. Gone was the stir-fry counter that would customize your pasta. Gone were the beautiful deserts - replaced by cheap stuff not worth eating. And the ice cream with the nice toppings? Don't look for it. It's gone also. We were here Sunday morning and it was one of the highlights of my little weekend trip. So much selection, freshness and fun! There's a good variety of basic breakfast foods as well as heavier main dishes. The made to order omelette station is genius, there's a variety of ingredients, you pick what goes in it, can't really go wrong. The pasta is also made to order so you know it's fresh and hasn't been sitting around or re-heated. Breads, bagels, french toast, cinnamon buns (that melt in your mouth!!) and my favorite: the buttery croissants are amazing. These are not hard and crusty like at other places. They were so soft and light, you couldn't fill up on them. Garnish them with cream cheese, brie, jams, flavored spreads like sundried tomato or garlic butter, the combinations are endless. There's cereal and milk for the kids or young at heart, a huge salad bar with at least 10 types of "cold" foods (chickpea salad, tuna salad, corn salad, etc) roast beef, bacon, ham and sausages sliced to your liking. There's even mussels, beef vandaloo, chicken pot pie, asian stir fries, basa fish filets.. Desserts were amazing, a chocolate fountain, dip fresh fruits, including bananas, marshmallows, make your own smores, there's 5 types of ice cream + sorbet with all the toppings, cheesecake, creme caramel, chocolate cake, rice krispy treats and so many others I wish I had more than one stomach. The food was delicious, service was speedy. Beware of long lines though. This is centrally located in Byward market and with a terrace, this is a hot spot for tourists. Wow, what a find for us. This was the first Tucker's we've been, and we were very impressed. Although the place has been around for a while, everything from the ceiling to floor looked new and in excellent condition. The buffet had a lot of variety, enough to amply satisfy my vegetarian wife and carnivore self, with great quality fresh food. There is a salad bar, carvery, stir fry grill (customizable!), soup station and dessert table. Good stuff! The staff was excellent and friendly (our sever came over to tell the coffee pourer that we took decafinated not regular coffee). Prices very reasonable. read more

Went to Tucker's with a few friends for a breakfast on a Sunday morning, and for what it is, I got exactly what I expected. For under $30 dollars, I got to eat as much breakfast and drink as much coffee as I could possibly want. French toast was good, sausages, eggs, and bacon were good as well. I convinced them to come with me as Tucker's was good back in the day. They are now back in Ottawa and it was totally disgusting. EVERYTHING was cold. Roast beef was very salty. Server could not answer one question we asked. Limited items. The butter bowl for the buns has ONE knife in it that ALL the customers use. In this day & age --- how gross is that. ZERO gluten-free options in the dessert bar. And did I mention everything was cold?? I spoke to the Manager before we left and he "explained" that they know about the temperature issues and that it's an on-going issue. Really?? You know it's bad, yet you keep taking people's money?? Unlike previous reviewers, we were NOT offered a discount or a comp meal --- however, we were asked "to not let this experience scare us from trying them again". REALLY ?? A MANAGER told us this.
