The waiting area has a gigantic chandelier, and the front desk is made from a wooden art piece that also serves as a product shelf and changing rooms-- you have to see it to believe it. But you can't mention Arrow Studio without talking about how fantastic Tiffany is. She used to cut my hair at her last employer before opening Arrow Studio, and I happily followed her, even though my drive is a bit longer now. It's worth it. Arrow Studio has custom-designed units at each haircut station that houses all the stylists' equipment, but also has a pull-out shelf for any personal items you bring (sunglasses, cell phone, etc.). There's also a coat rack near the front, which seems mundane, but I can't remember the last time I went to get a haircut and actually had someone take my coat. It's the little details that matter. The biggest downside is that parking in downtown Durham can be a doozy. But don't worry! There are two parking decks right beside Arrow, and you can get your ticket validated after your haircut. Check out Arrow Studio next time you need a haircut, coloring or styling. It's a much-welcomed addition to the blossoming downtown Durham homegrown business scene.

After doing some research, I called Arrow when it first opened at 9am to see if they could squeeze me in that day and lo and behold, they had space! My appointment was with Alex who is a Level 1 but honestly, if I didn't know that going into the appointment, I would have never known. She took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted, was super understanding and made me feel so comfortable in her chair. When it came to my cut, I had asked to dry cut it (I have naturally curly hair and I prefer stylists to cut it when it's straightened as that's how I normally have it styled), and it turned out perfectly. She kept my length, cut off the dry ends and it looks exactly as I want it to. The color - literally WOW. I have dark hair and I wanted something subtle and natural but still fun, and she did just that. I have never left any salon so happy and thrilled with how my hair looks. Alex, you are a gem and so fun to spend 3 hours with! My hair turned out so well, I will literally fly in from New York just to have her do it again. And my mom was so impressed that she's found her new spot (and a new stylist!) Thank goodness my other appointment got cancelled, I would have never found this amazing place!

I specifically called to book the March Special, even clarifying this with the receptionist on the phone. Despite that, they booked me for regular haircuts and blow-dry instead. The issues only grew from there: * Pricing Discrepancy: The math on my initial $139 invoice didn't add up ($62 + $67 = $129). * Credit Card Error: The computer system showed one price when I paid, but my credit card was actually charged a different, higher amount. * Retrofitting the Math: When I pointed out the $139 total didn't match the $129 in services, I was sent a new invoice that suddenly included tax to justify the original $139. It felt like they were reverse-engineering the total by adding tax after the fact to make the numbers 'work.' I have never had tax added like that on any hair services. The salon offered to honor the special on a future visit, but since I'm from out of town, that doesn't help resolve the current overcharge. It's a shame because the talent in the chair is top-tier, but the lack of transparency and handling of the mishap were very disappointing. If you go for the great stylists, double-check your booking and your bank statement!"

My appointment was marked as a "no-show" because they said it was scheduled 45 minutes earlier than when I arrived. However, I showed the receptionist my confirmation email that clearly listed my appointment time as the time I arrived. She said she didn't know why I received that, but they could take me as a walk-in -- only if I paid full price, meaning my deposit wouldn't count. It's frustrating because if the stylist was available to take me, and I had proof of the appointment time I was given, it feels unfair to lose my deposit over what was clearly a mix-up. I've waited over 30 minutes past my appointment time here before without ever complaining because I understand things happen. But apparently, that same courtesy doesn't go both ways. After years of loyalty and even referring family, I will not be returning.

The second Poppy Salon location moved back to the original building. The salon was easy to find, tucked away in a corner. There's plenty of parking on either sides of the building. Poppy Salon is full of life and individuals with artistic skills. It may be busy inside but the energy is infectious. This isn't a permanent location, however, and Poppy Salon will eventually be moved into a larger building next year. I'm really looking forward to seeing the changes! I personally work with Isabella (Isa) and have been seeing her for over a year now. She is such a vibe and I have so much fun when I see her! Isa is incredibly talented with vivid hair color. I went to someone else in between colorings (yes, I cheated and came crying back) and it was just not the same. Isa is worth the 45 minute drive! Since seeing Isa, my hair has become healthier and thicker...and that's with me always changing my color! Hands down, Isa is THE BEST stylist I've ever been to. Love love LOVE her!!

She is absolutely fantastic -- great eye, excellent technique, friendly and kind. She understands cutting with the hair and not fighting it, and how to work with the crazy humid weather we get here in NC. Kelsey locked into what I wanted pretty quickly and I trust her completely -- over the past few years all of my haircuts involve a quick chat and then me declaring, "Do what you think is best!" And we will occasionally do little edits to the overall look that keep things feeling fresh but still consistently what I want, and I've never been upset or disappointed. My hair is long, coarse, very thick, wavy hair. It is "Asian hair" but a little atypical due to its coarseness. I find that i need someone who really appreciates and understands hair texture to work with mine, because I prefer air-drying when possible and just having low-maintenance hair. Her haircuts are fairly priced ($50), and I've also come in for blow outs for special occasions (college reunion, weddings, big presentations at work, etc.) for an extra, very welcome boost. Last year I got a keratin treatment from her, too, and I loved the results -- much gentler than other straightening treatments I've had and results lasted a long time. She has online booking (just google her name), which make setting up appointments a snap. I've recommended Kelsey to multiple friends and want to recommend her to you, too! :) The atmosphere of the salon is fun, clean, and a little funky without being pretentious, annoying, or stuffy. Plus, Hot Headz is next to Joe Van Gogh coffee so you can get some work done beforehand or head over for a cup of coffee if you want to show off your fabulous new hairdo. Parking is easy in the lot beside The Green Room. Everyone in there is friendly, and they offer you a beer or glass of wine to sip on while you get your hair did. A+++

Angela Goldman rocks the hair world. I have been going to see her the last three years and couldn't imagine anyone else near my hair. She is so good, I just let her play with my color and style because I know whatever she comes up with I will be happy. I'm not talking crazy hair, just subtle changes that compliment the shape and style of your personality. I now take the whole family to Angela. My fiance always comes out looking "hot" and the kids feel like they are styling, as high school students should. Angela takes her time to hear what you want and is great at suggesting something you may not have thought of. She takes great care to make sure every customer is treated kindly and with respect. It's hard to find that person to let mess with your hair and believe me I had some hideous cuts before landing in her chair. If this sounds like you, I suggest making an appointment with Ang.

I would say it is on the more expensive side but I only go a few times a year and I'm happy to pay a bit more for quality and to support a local business. I appreciate that they keep notes about what I have asked for in the past and what I like. The location in Golden Belt is a bit tucked away but you can always ask the security guard. The studio itself is small and funky. During COVID it was only one client at a time because the studio is so small and they are still keeping with mask requirements which I appreciate. I would say the only downside is that parking has gotten crazy in Golden Belt with so many new businesses moving in that it can be hard to find a spot especially during lunch time. You might consider grabbing a spot on Morning Glory instead of trying to park in the Golden Belt lot.
