I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the classes I've attended with different instructors and have found myself both challenged and relaxed after every class! I really appreciate that a sense of community seems to be a goal in this studio - the instructors, especially Kai, make it a point to make you feel seen and guided throughout class. I don't feel like just another number at this studio and feel welcomed every time I step in! The amenities are also great! A relaxing studio with big mirrors and a cool ambiance, changing rooms, showers, restrooms, and super clean - what more could you ask for? As far as Covid-19 protocols go, I felt safe and did feel that there was attention to detail in cleaning as well as safety practices during my visits - masks are worn unless you are practicing and you must show proof of vaccination/negative Covid test if you do want to practice without a mask. Erica, the name of the person who was supposed to open the studio, was very brief, somewhat rude, and not welcoming. I asked her if I needed to sign anything, she just said "Just put your stuff away and go to class." The instructor, Molly, was super nice. She helped me check in and chatted with me as it was my first class with Commune and ClassPass. She challenges individuals with various movements and provides modifications as needed. I'm a bit disappointed with the engagement with the staff at the studio especially since this is my first class with them.

It smells sweaty too when you walk in and are hit with a wave of humidity. They really need to cap the number of people allowed in a class because everyone suffers. One of the women who works the front desk (I think she also teaches) is snappy and rude. I was getting water before class and she snapped at me to get inside - I was just trying to stay hydrated? I've heard her arguing with customers and she doesn't seem like a yogi at all - always seems grumpy and passive-aggressive like she'd rather be anywhere else. Love the teachers but probably won't come back to the studio - a lot of them seem to teach elsewhere.

Her three regular clients had all emailed and said they couldn't make it that night, so I was treated to an individual session. Annie was such a delight to learn from! I told her that my knees were bothering me after taking up running, and she tailored the session to knee strength, breathing consciousness, and stretching. It seems like a person should should stumble upon Linda Hiller by some stroke of fate that has nothing to do with a website like yelp. Once there, perhaps a person realizes their good fortune because their body has been ravaged by the well-intentioned but inexperienced teachers at other yoga studios, maybe because they need an ongoing ego spanking, or maybe they just need a yoga teacher with years of experience, true depth of knowledge of the body, a lovely sense of humor and a giant benevolent Leonberger dog named Rosie who lounges in the studio and gazes serenely at them as they toil away at their practice. Linda crosses the line effortlessly back and forth between strict, alignment-oriented dominatrix, and sweet, compassionate co-conspirator on the path. She manages to be completely involved with her students, while at the same time healthily detached - clearly the result of years of attending to her own practice. Obviously her own practice has served her well, she knows intimately what she teaches for better and for worse - she has been through it all herself. And while she makes the poses look effortless, she lets you know where she comes from and where she's been, and that she is no different than you can be if you put in the time and effort. Her dedication to providing her students with an extremely challenging class experience that is accessible to all levels is unique. Bonus points for no major overt display or discussion of "spirituality", leaving a practitioner free to bring in his or her own ideas and feelings, bonus points for her husband David in class to heckle her when the going gets too tough, and bonus points for the community of regulars who inspire with their toughness and dedication. This might be the only yoga studio in Seattle that has managed to randomly pull off an all male class one Friday night. It's $20 per class for Linda's 1 1/2 hour classes which often end up going over by 15 minutes...there are no punch cards, no monthly unlimited specials, no deals. Now that most studios in Seattle charge 16 or $17 for a drop-in, and because it is such a small group that it feels like a semi-private, I would call it hands-down some of the best money I've ever spent. I have never been to any other teacher at Tulinda but Linda Hiller, and if you aren't available M, W, F nights from 5-6:30 and Sundays from noon-1:30, then I'm sorry, you'll have to find another fabulous yoga teacher. Good luck. They're out there, but teachers like this are not easy to find.

To them, this apparently means one movement per breath, though my experience in their power vinyasa class felt more like three movements per breath. I could hardly keep up! I shared my perspective with the front desk after the class when I had to decide between paying for a $25 drop in v. a $40 30-day trial period, and was met basically with "that's how it's supposed to be", in so many words. I understand that these classes are taught in this method by design, but as a business-minded person, I couldn't help but think that they could draw 2-3x more people per each class if they adapted a bit to the status quo of the Seattle yoga scene. With a location as prime as this one, don't you want to make more money by practicing yoga that (more) people will actually enjoy? SLU doesn't seem like the place for a stronghold of a fairly niche method of yoga... It seems like people probably go here just because there isn't a better option so close to work. The frantic pace of class, mixed with the hot-enough-to-perspire-but-not-hot-enough-to-SWEAT classroom temp, the unpleasant locker room experience (so crowded!), and the overpriced package options made this a two star experience for me.

Not only is it within walking distance from a lot of the hotels in the area, they have a great staff and a variety of challenging classes to to choose from throughout the week. I wasn't quite sure what Baptiste style was when I first joined, but if you're into Vinyasa, it's pretty much like that, but a little stronger and hot. Depending on when you go, the classes can be super packed. They do mark spots on the floor with tape to make sure that they are maximizing the space and allowing as many students as possible to practice at any given time. I think that's smart - I've been to a lot of studios where they just let everyone do their thing and it becomes mass chaos, and mats are pretty much positioned anywhere and everywhere. I've taken mostly the Hour of Power and Power Flow classes. The Hour of Power is only 60-mins, but it's pretty intense. Besides it being a warm studio, you'll be sweating and working hard. Just remember to breathe, drink water when you need it and probably bring an absorbent mat towel to soak up all your hard efforts. For a little more, the Power Flow is great because it's an hour and a half. Scott Francis is the instructor that I've taken the most while visiting and he's great. His voice is really calming and he puts together some nice flows to make sure you're getting the most out of the high intensity class. Lockers are complimentary and electronic. As you place your belongings inside, you choose your own unique code to retrieve your stuff so you don't have to hassle with a key. The men's room has three showers with some nice smelling stuff to make sure you don't leave the studio a big sweaty mess. Mat rentals and towel rentals are available for a fee. A big plus is that they are next door to a Whole Foods, so you can grab juice before or after your class to help feed your body with fresh nutrients! I highly recommend!

The classes are offered in a small studio and the class sizes are very intimate with a maximum of no more than 12-14 students. Given this the instructing is very up close and personal and Elizabeth is always there to help you on every step of your yoga journey. Not to mention she is always positive and upbeat and helps you believe that you can do anything. She is a true believer in choosing your own practice. If there are some poses you cannot do whether it be due to strength or injury, she always offers an alternative. And if the alternative is still not an option, you can always just take a moment to rest without judgement. Misa Yoga is truly an amazing gem of a studio in the heart of West Seattle. With an amazing instructor and reasonable class plans you really cannot go wrong. Ultimately you become more than just a student, you end up joining an amazing Yoga Community.
