I was first attracted to what was then…read morecalled Athey Creek Christian Fellowship when my brother recommended the verse-by-verse bible teaching of it's pastor and founder, Brett Meador. I'm sure he's as warm, friendly and personable as he sounds on audio, and appears in video. However, attending numerous services over they years, 'Pastor Brett' is kind of like the Wizard of Oz. He appears through the magic wall-size video screen -- teaches -- and disappears when he's finished. It's obvious that with such a large following that he can't be everyone's 'personal pastor' -- thus Athey has a dozen or more sub-pastors. Sadly, those with whom I've interfaced are quite unlike the kindly Pastor Brett. The warmness of Pastor Brett seems to end with him. It feels like a "cold" church otherwise. The church eschews 'greeters'. After hassling with parking, families and couples rush into the church, check in their kids, reserve their seats, grab coffee and chat with their long time friends. Every time I've visited the church in person, I stood near the 'barn doors' and smile at folks rushing in. I've been mistaken for a greeter; I let them know I'm not, just looking for friendly people to meet. In all of the encounters, two different men stopped to chat for a moment. At the end, no one lingers; everyone rushes for the door, trying to make it to their vehicles and out of the parking lot. I've been a few of their men's group meetings. Especially since my Christian brother and friend have passed away, I've been hoping to make male Christian friends. Again, arriving early; smiling; reaching out saying "hello, how are you, I'm ....." -- it's meet with a coolness and indifference that's positively chilling. It's interesting that no one can become a 'member' of Athey Creek Church - they claim not to have membership roles. Calling for prayer recently, I was met with biblical scolding by a pastor on the telephone. I'll chalk it up my not expressing myself and my situation well at the time. It made me very sad at the time, feeling that I'd "lost my church". But then, I realized, I've never been accepted as a "member" anyway. Still, Brett's bible teaching is still exceptionally good. I watched again today, from home.

The messages are deep and can be challenging at times and that seems to be the point of their "Outward Communities" that they encourage everyone to be apart of. Its not your typical church music experience either. The music seems to be geared towards a "younger" sound, but the gospel message is clearly portrayed through worship. WE GOT MUGGED AT THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH!…read more Yes we were mugged! As first time visitors on Sunday, one of the brother's welcomed my wife and I, while we were seated, with a coffee mug filled with treats with the inscription "I Got Mugged at the First Christian Church." Clever! This was a very nice hospitable touch to recognize a visitor. Other members introduced themselves too! We toured the church with a 30-year member earlier in the week when my wife and I attended an author's book reading sponsored by the church--spacious facility with large sanctuary, library, patio and social events room. The MESSAGE based on Romans 5:1-5 was delivered eloquently by pastor Amy Piatt. The sermon reminds us to stand firm in our trials and be joyful because of our troubles. Our troubles produce patience and patience produces christian character. There is plenty of grace in the wide open spaces for a christian to observe and to serve--right here in Portland! There is always hope and love--an inspiring message from the WORD by the pastor. The WORSHIP service was praiseworthy. We loved listening to the pianist backed up with a guitarist and drummer. Hymns were sung by the congregation lead by a professor of music at Portland State University--boy was he talented. A young, gifted guitarist played a solo composition by Manuel Ponce. I was amazed by the speed of his fingers strumming each note with so much precision and passion. I was told that the 9 AM service leaned toward contemporary and the 11 AM more traditional. By the musical talent witnessed my guess is both would be a blessing! The CHURCH has served Portland's diverse downtown community since 1879 and is located in the scenic SW Park Blocks near the Portland Museum of Art, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and PSU. The First Christian Church is "an open community of faith, learning, growing, making a difference through Christ" (part of the vision statement). Don't be surprised when you visit you will get mugged too! We plan to return. If you get a chance the church is featuring a PSU Guitar Ensemble Concert on May 30th. Remember that a member is a PSU music professor so it should be great.
