I'll be honest: Russell, Kansas, was not on my mental map of places to eat well. But fate (and…read moreYelp) intervened. Suddenly we were pushing open the door to Waudby's entering, notably, through the bar side, which felt charmingly unpretentious in a you-wouldn't-get-this-in-Manhattan sort of way. The space splits cleanly between lively bar energy and a quieter, separate dining room, which I deeply appreciated after hours on the road and approximately twelve internal monologues. Then, the food. Genuinely outstanding. I ordered the Philly, fully expecting road-trip decent, and instead received something delightful, indulgent, and as good as versions I've had in Pennsylvania neighborhoods where people argue loudly over sandwiches. But the true sleeper hit? The cornballs. Please, I beg you, do not pass on them. They are crispy, nostalgic, and perfect. The kind of globs of fried bliss you'll still be thinking about once you're home pretending to only eat salads. Waudby's is proof excellent food exists far beyond city zips, and I would absolutely return. If I find myself in Russell again, this is a mandatory stop. The waitress and servers were absolute sweeties. My friend adds: the homemade ranch dressing was so good, you could almost drink it.

We watched the U.S. playing in the FIFA game here on our visit. The service was very good. Staff was wonderful.

An interesting visit to Chuck's Bar. Not quite the same results as my stop in February. I did…read morerecommend this to our group because we had great service and good food! This time maybe a bit different. Our group of 8 started out with the Potato Skins and The Sampler! Both were very good and would definitely recommend! I chose the Whiskey Creek Burger as did two others in our group. The consensus / good burger but overcooked and not enough bbq sauce. Another chose the Leroy Brown, 2 more got Bacon Cheese Burger, another 1/2 Club - overall the lunch was well liked. Our server was great and she kept on top of everything. Doubtful our travels will pass through here again but if in the area it's a worthy stop!

We ordered trash can nachos and sliders as our meals. The nachos were the first thing to come out, yes before the appetizer. They were terrible, no lettuce, no shredded cheese, had ordered with extra jalapenos, there were none. The top had some kind of hamburger gravy looking stuff on it, the pico was completely hidden, they didn't taste good. The cheeseburger sliders came out and one had mushrooms on it. Finally the sampler came out and it was all pretty much burnt, the rattle snake eggs had bacon on it that was so done it just feel apart and the peppers were burnt. The waitress came over and got us boxes and left the check and listen to our concerns. She obviously didn't want to face the problem because she never came back to the table. We had to go to the bar to pay. There wasn't one apology or offer to make it better. Chuck's you need to do better.

Tucked on the periphery of the Wichita State University campus, nestled among frat houses and dilapidated dorms (does anyone even live in Brennan Hall anymore? Is that even a thing?), Field House has been a stalwart since my days as an overly ambitious coed with an ego as unending as the construction on Kellogg. With beer options as varied as Miller Light, as craft as ShockTop, and liquor options that stop just short of Fernet, the Field House isn't for city slickers with perfectly coiffed cowlicks hoping to sample artisan cocktails, and imbibe in sipping tequila. It is however, the perfect spot for those of us in our late 20s and early 30s who never forgot the power of a $5 you-call-it, and the allure of a bartender whom we grew up with, and had a crush on 15 years ago. If you're looking for an economical way to lap away your sorrows and meet a stranger that you'd met once before at the SigEp house a decade or so ago, Field House will deliver. But unlike the days of my reckless youth, I am now old enough to sip my Frio with class, and only occasionally take over the Touch Tunes juke box to put Saves the Day, Panic! At the Disco, and Alkaline Trio on blast. I am also young enough to get straight up drunk on Rumple Minze, eat a bag of cheese Doritos, and toss darts errantly at a dart board or a wall, whichever happens to appear closer at the time.
